Pronunciation rules for ਕਹਾ

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

I have heard that according to Gurbani Viakaran, ਕਹਾ should be nasal at end under certain circumstances.

Could someone please explain the rules behind where it needs to be nasal and where it should be read as is.

Nasal ਕਹਾ = ਕਹਾਂ

ਮੈਂ ਕਹਾਂ, I say
ਹਮ ਕਹਾਂ, I say

Not nasal ਕਹਾ

ਹਮ ਕਹਾ, We said
ਉਨ ਕਹਾ, They said
ਤਿਸ ਕਹਾ, He said
ਤੁਮ ਕਹਾ,You said
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਹਾ, Prabhu said


And if it is ਕਹਾ only, the subject is hidden, understand the context and find the subject, and pronounce accordingly, Ji.

Not nasal ਕਹਾ will also include the meanings as below

ਹਮ ਕਹਾ i.e. I said

So for all past tense statements irrespective of the subject, we will say ਕਹਾ, and ਕਹਾਂ is used for first person (i.e. I) present tense statements only.

One of the most common meanings of this word ਕਹਾ are ਕੀ, ਕਿਉਂ, ਕਿਵੇਂ or ਕਿਆ and in such cases this word should not be pronounced with a nasal sound. Presented below are some Pankitis where this word means ਕੀ or ਕਿਉਂ or ਕਿਵੇਂ or ਕਿਆ:

ਕੀਤਾ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
(ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ, ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਕੀ ਮਾਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।)
