The first poem is not from a Kavi but from a Mahakavi and who else is a Mahakavi but Bhai Sahib Santokh Singh jee Chooramani. It is a small poem dedicated to Siri Guru Har Rai Sahib jee. It really is a Mangal of Patshahi Satvee (7).

Enjoy the Mangal of Siri Guru Har Rai Sahib jee, written by Mahakavi Santokh Singh jee:

The use of word ਤਾਰਾ is absolutely awesome in the above Mangal. In all four tuks, this word has a different meaning. In the first tuk, ਤਾਰਾ means the Putree (ਨੈਨਹੁ ਕੀ ਪੂਤਰੀ) i.e. ball of eye. The second ਤਾਰਾ in the first tuk means to remove. In the second tuk this word ਤਾਰਾ means to swim. In the third tuk ਤਾਰਾ means to scold, to chide, to mollify. In the fourth tuk ਤਾਰਾ means Taala i.e. a lock.

The meanings are as follows:

1) When you gaze at someone with your eye (O Siri Guru Har Rai jee) you destroy his worries, and remove the poison of poison.

2) He has established the bridge of Keerat (praising Vaheguru) between the two worlds (this world and the next one), and this way has let many swim across the world ocean.

3) He has chided and thus mollified the Matt i.e. religion of the evil as the sun clears the stars of night during the day.

4) Siri Guru Har Rai has opened the lock of the heart by giving Updesh (divine teaching) to the heart.

It is hard to do justice when translating such lofty work. May Guru Sahib pardon this daas for mistakes committed when interpreting this great work.

Daas,
Kulbir Singh

Bhai sahib,

Since you have challenged the rest. I shall challenge you. Please write a poem in honor of Guru Sahib

I have already posted a poem by my senior senior brother Mahakavi Santokh Singh jee. smiling smiley Now it is your turn. I am not a poet as you all know but you three are pretty good poets. So go ahead and accept the challenge.

Just a side note, I too intend to attempt at writing something for Guru Sahib. Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee and other Singhs used to write poems for Guru Sahib and then used to read them out on the Gurpurab day. Let's continue this tradition.

Seventh Guru - Guru Har Rai Jee
The Almighty is the Truth
The Almighty is Omnipresent
Guru Har Rai nourishes truth, and adheres to veracity,
And Guru Har Rai is a sovereign as well as a preceptor.(87)
Guru Har Rai is benevolent to both the worlds,
And Guru Har Rai is the forerunner of the lives heretofore and
hereafter.(88)
The Creator gratifies in applauding the generosities of Guru Har Rai,
And all the humanity succeeds in its ventures due to Guru Har Rai.(89)
Guru Har Rai’s expositions are the sovereignty of truthfulness,
And Guru Har Rai articulates commands to all the heavens.(90)
Guru Har Rai is the annihilator of the rebellious and the arrogant,
But Guru Har Rai is the benefactor and the shelter of the weak and the
destitute.(91)

Please find below another Mangal of Siri Guru Har Rai Sahib jee, by Mahakavi Santokh Singh jee:

The word ਭਵ has many meanings and in this Mangal, Mahakavi jee has used this word three times, in three different meanings, in just one line.

The first ਭਵ means this world i.e. Bhavsagar, the second bhav means to take birth and the third Bhav means Vaheguru (from root Bhoo meaning one who is existent from itself i.e. not created) . The meaning of the Mangal is:

If some persons take birth in this world and are Rank i.e. very poor; on such persons, Rasaal (very pleasant) Siri Guru Har Rai becomes merciful as Vaheguru and turns them into kings of Earth (Paalak Prithvee i.e. kings of Earth).

Below is a humble attempt to write the Saakhi of Bhai Genda jee and how he held on to Guru Sahib's Charan Kamal in his Hirda and how Siri Guru jee did not get up till Bhai jee sat in spiritual trance. It's a very humble attempt to write this saakhi in poetry form. It is a very meagre attempt to present this poem to the Shaan of Guru Sahib:

(makhmoor means intoxicated)

(Ilaahi Noor means divine illumination)

(Betaab means impatient)

(Taab means taabiya)

(Mehtaab means moon)

(Azeez means very dear)

(Nagaz means pious, pure)

With respect to converting text to unicode, follow the following procedure:

Click the following [guca.sourceforge.net] then download GUCA 1.3.

Make sure to tell Active X control bar to Download this file. Next download window will pop up choose SAVE then save it your desktop (or where ever you want in hard drive).

After download you will see this is ZIP folder. Now create a new folder on desktop and name it GURMUKHI to UNICODE (this is where you gonna exract the Zip folder you downloaded).

Now double click the ZiP folder the unzipper program (generally WinZIp if you have) will ask you where to Unzip then choose the folder you created on Desktop.

Once extraction is done. Open up the folder and look for capitol black color letter G, double click this now the converter window will open up and ready for converstions.

Generally this is what we do, we type in Gurbani lipi or Anmol lipi in word. Then copy and paste it to the upper window of convertor and click convert and its all done.

Here is the thing to remember when converter window is opened click Tools then Options then select Mappings tab and here you can choose from what lipi to Unicode you like to make. Once that selection is made that stays there until you change again.

How can I write to praise Sri Guru Jee?
My whole life must become a poem in his ecstasy.

How can I comprehend the bhagti of Bhai Genda Jee?
I must sit in dhiyaan of my Guseeaa Jee.

How can I receive Gursikhan dee dhooree?
I must keep begging at the door of my Preetam Jee.

I am not worthy...

Below is a half- baked attempt to explain the blessings and times of Guru Sahib in Kiratpur. Sorry for the length.

Holy King of KiratPur

Blessed and Beautiful is that place in which Sri Guru Har Rai would Reside.
Sangat strived, and would only feel alive
when they were next to Sri Guru Har Rai Jis side.

Sri Guru Har Rai contined to maintain the keerat in Kiratpur.
Seperated- Widow like sangat poured to the holy city, and would beg for more and more.
Seeking his Darshan, the widows desired the key to the celestial door
Their bodies were physically poor, spiritually sick and sore
due to the Panj Chor.
Meditating and Singing on the Fearless Lord
sangat would receive immeasure blessings from Guru- Saints sword
With his illustrious sword he would destroy the Panj Chor

The Guru became a sacrifice for those who do true worship
The light in their bodies will forever remain lit.

In the Gurus beautiul garden, Gursikhs would walk and sing. They daily performed a nagar kirtan
The true praise of WaaheGuru would make their heart stop beating
Completely mergeed in the celestial song
they were completely drenched in the divine rang
Through the GUrus grace they would reach celestial places
Blissful and bright were their beautiful faces.

Blessed Blessed is Sri Guru Har Rai Ji presence,
though it Bride-Souls enter Sach Khands entrance.

Blessed became the widows fate
after crossing into Kiratpurs gate
Their songs of sorrow became songs of Joy
This city became the place in which Bhagats would later deploy.

Bhagat Bhagwan Ji heart sang the song of pain and seperation. His mind was full with worries and fear.
Speaking on Gurus behalf , Gurus Sangat told Bhagat "have faith the day of meeting is near".
The Gurus Bani hit Bhagat Jis heart harder than a Tsunami.

Meeting the Saint Guru, Bhagat Ji was free from Krodh and Kaam
Bhagat Ji was blessed with the gift of Naam

When receiving Naam, Bhagat Jis body experienced things that defy the Laws of Nature.
Later Guru Ji would send Bhagat Ji to Bihar to set up Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahibs legislature.

Getting ready to go to Bihar Guru Ji gave Bhagat Ji an iron bowl
Guru Ji said " Gurmukho take this wherever you go"
" Never eat alone, regard the Gurus house langar as your home"

Guru Ji then said

" Out of this iron bowl continue to set up a grand feast,
24/7 Gurus Langar will remain so ever sweet"

Guru Ji then said

" Always Recite Waaheguru, WaaheGurooooo....
when making and distributing Guru Jis holy food"

"Remember caste is an ignorant custom of the past"

Guru Ji then explained

The poor eat out of straw that is old
The rich only eat from the finest gold
In my langar as a pangat, all will eat put of Sarab Loh
There will be no distinction of high and low
My beloved Sikhs will regard Sarab Loh as Gold.
Keep this Iron Bowl, and there will be an abundance of Langar
Nobody in Bihar will die off Hunger
Nobody will ever die off thrist
See me in my Sikh and serve them first
After Bihar, spread my langar throughout the earth
You will then destroy all comings of death and birth

Bhagat Ji took this iron bowl wherever he went
So ultimate bliss in both worlds is how his days were spent.
In the city of Kiratpur, Guru Ji created Bhagats to such an extent
that their values and principles could never be bent.

This bright city was full of divine light
As if the city did not experience Night
This fortress city no emperor dared to fight

Due to the 6th kings blessing and the 7th Kings divine reputation
No tyrant dared to attack the growing Sikh nation.

Years in Kiratpur were spent in peace and prosperity
which lead to the growth of Sikh posterity

Times of peace were spent in planning a defensive war
Peace was used to bring more to Sri Guru Nanak Sahib Jis door

Building an Army for the times a head
Thousands of devotees offered their head
He gave life to the dead after accepting their head Guru Ji said
" Restrain from the ways of those whom wear green and red ( mughals)"

" Stay distinct on the Gurus Path
Wake early and bathe in the Gurus bath"

"Then bathe the mind in the divine name
Thus I will give you all my glory and fame"

The Sikhs and the Guru kept their word, and the city of Kiratpur spread
but now the posterity have broken the promise and the spirit of Kiratpur is dead
Now the old city of life has become the city of dead

They throw ancestral ashes in the Gurus sarovar
the corrupted custodians get happy when NRI visitors come over
Not a day passes when these greedy leeches are sober

Stuck in Pakhand Karam
They have mocked the Gurus Dharam

Oh my Foolish foreign mind fall at the gurus feet and no longer be color blind.

Maharaj Ji bring us back to the days of celestial peace
Bring us widow souls back to your holy feet
Send us your gifts like raining showers
If we promise again to wake up during ambrosial hours.

Sri Guru Gareeb Nivaaz
Please bless us with the prime virtue of Naam Abhyiaas
Please Sri Guru Gareeb Nivaaz
Bless us with the gift and quality of Naam Abhyiaas

Sri GUru Har Rai bless our ice-cold ,Kaljug- winter soul
Our mind is defeated yet we have not reached the goal
Please bless us with the victory of celestial peace
Bring Sach Khand Spring, and make Kaljug winter retreat

Replace our winter- dry weeded heart that is destined for doom
bless us with the spring lotus ,which through your grace is destined to bloom

You are forever forgiving.

Dhan DHan Sri Guru Har Rai who returns evillness with kindness. His heart so pure.
He gave his "adversaries" son Dara Shikoh a medicinal cure.

So powerful is the love of Sri Guru Har Rai
afraid to lose this love, Bhai Pheru was willing to lose his eye

So exhilarating is the presence of Sri Guru Har Rai
that Bhai Bhagtu stayed by his presence until he would physically die
So empathetic was Sri Guru Har Rai
he would not eat without the contentment of his Bhai
Guru Ji would not even eat
unless Bhai Genda Ji let go off his holy feet

Sri GUru Rai let us once again establish your holy feast
let us always stay attached to your holy feet

Deg Tegh Fateh!

I myself wanted to write about Bhai Genda ji as I loved the sakhi as was told in a deevaan by Bhai Sukha Singh from UK. I can’t come close to Bhai Kulbir Singh ji’s kavya rachna, but here is a mere attempt. This sakhi is told in the form of a poem in 3rd person. I am personifying myself as the air (pavan) that is flowing from Kabul, where Bhai Genda ji lived, all the way to Kiratpur Sahib where Sahib Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji lived. First I see Bhai Genda ji doing bhagti at 3 AM, and then I flow to Kiratpur Sahib and see that Gurujee couldn’t move to leave His aasan or even eat till 3 PM in the afternoon as Bhai Sahib was lost in meditation for 12 hours. I have entitled this poem as “Kartaar giraftaar”

Siga suhana sama salona, pyaare da naam len da mahoorat
Machleya machleya mai udd’da jaama, ajj mera vi mann tappda hai
Mai vekhaan sammne ikk Guru da piyaara, prem ch bhijjke naam jappda hai

Dhann Sri Guru Har Rai, Dhann Sri Guru Har Rai, eh dhunn mithhee goonjdi hai

Jisnu eh chete karda hai, oh lagda Rab hee hai, koi sant nahi

Dooro dekhaan te jyot chamakdi, lagda ehi oh asthaan hai

Gadh gadh mai hova bey’hisaab, noorani mukhda kamaal

Jeede chehre da parkash vekh ke, soorj vi charan chummda
Bethhe adha din beet giya, nah khaada nah peeta

Hill nah hoya Tetho jinna chir, Gende ne dhiyaan kholleya nah
Bann ke rakh leya Tenu Daateya, te Tu vi kush bolleya nah

Maya, vastar, ja rumaale, ehna naal Ohnu kaun bannuga
Milooga Daata sirf ohna nu, jo prem naal Hukam mannuga
Sache pyaar da bandhan ikk aisa, bebas ho janda Kartaar
Sikh ne prem di hathkadi jad laayi, ta vekho hoya Guru vi giraftaar

I was reading a Sakhi the other day on this forum about a Faqir named Baba Budhan Shah who met Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. I was a little confused about this Sakhi and it made me think of this poem which I have written in celebration of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji.

Blessed House of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib Ji

Deadly fire completely covered the earth,
but this fire was extinguished through the holy birth
Happy and Joyful were all the devtas of the Universe,
when Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji took birth on this Earth
The House of Sri Guru Nanak removes every curse
whom can appraise its worth?

Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib, Seventh King -Seventh Nanak Sahib
Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib, Seventh Saint, successor of Gur- Shabad

Sri GUru Har Rai Sahib perfect servant of WaaheGuru - Antar Jaami
Sri GUru Har Rai Sahib whose astral body and atmic jot exist in Gurbani

Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib exist in Ek Oankar
like the light that exist in a Star
Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib exist in Sat Nam
like Sri Guru Nanak's House existing in Raam ( God)
He exist in Nirabhau, Nirvair
like WaaheGuru existing in every Hair
Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib exist in Akal Moorat, Ajooni Saibhan(g)
like the GUrmukhs mind immersed in the divine song
He exist in Gurprasaad
Sri Guru Har Rai Sahibs limits go too far

Sri Guru Rai Sahibs atmic jot exist in Sri Guru Granth
His illumated astral body exist in the true panth
Celstial sareer of Sri Guru Nanak
is the house of every Bhagat
MaharaJI Sri GUru Nanak- Har Rai gave birth to those whom were willing to die

Dying to their self they have taken birth in the Gurus home
Now they are never alone.
The astral body of Sri Guru Nanak is the home of every Bhagat
the astral body of Sri Guru Nanak exist in the GuruShabad

What to say of the yogi Gurmukhs of Sri Guru Har Rai
They truly learned how to die

Bhagats like Sri Singh Baba Attar the GurShahad is all they utter
the Divine Song will continue to rain in Saints like Sri Singh Baba Nand
Sri GUru Nanaks house, house without fear will continue to be guaded with a spear
by Guadian angels like Sri Singh Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir
His illuminating body will bloom in Sri Singh Baba Isher
and every other celestial frishta like Baba Isher

Blessed is the birth of Sri Guru Har Rai whose life exist in the Sri Guru Granth
Blessed is the Panj and Sri Guru Granth whom has given birth to the celestial panth.

Blessed is Nanaks house that saved the mouse
the cat ( death) can not approach this house.
blessed is the birth who was destined for this House.

ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਕੰਬਿਆ, ਹਨੇਰ ਦੀ ਚਾਦਰ ਖਿੰਡੀ ਸੀ;

ਹਿਰਦਾ ਫੁਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਮਲ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਜਾਗਤ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਨੇ;

ਦੁਨੀਆ ਪਾਖੰਡ ਦਸਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੇ ਬਿਰਹੋਂ ‘ਚ ਰੋਣ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ;

ਦੋ ਕਦਮ ਨਾਲ ਚੱਲ ਪਵੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰਣ ਔਖਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ;

ਅਸੀਂ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਦੁਰਕਾਰੇ, ਕੋਈ ਹਮਦਮ ਤੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ;

ਲਗਦੈ ਐਵੀਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਮਰ ਜਾਣਾ, ਪੱਤਝੜ ਦੇ ਫੁਲ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ;

ਭਾਂਵੇ ਭੇਖੀ ਹਾਂ, ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ ਭਗਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਹਾਂਦੇ ਹਾਂ;

ਬੁਰੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਭਲੇ ਹਾਂ ਜੈਸੇ ਵੀ ਹਾਂ ਬੱਸ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਹਾਂ;

ਸੱਭ ਕੁਝ ਬਖਸ਼ਿਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਮੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ;

ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਤੂੰ ਹੈਂ, ਸਖਾ, ਬੰਧਪ ਭਰਾਤਾ ਤੂੰ ਹੈਂ;

Today on the auspicious Gurpurab day of Siri Guru Har Rai Sahib jee, presented below are 3 small mangals in the honour of Siri Guru jee, written by Mahakavi Bhai Sahib Santokh Singh jee Chooramani. In the coming days, I intend to bring all Mangals written by Mahakavi jee in honour of Siri Guru Har Rai jee, under this thread. This daas does not have words to praise the genius poetry of Mahakavi jee.

(Siri Guru Har RaI jee turns servants who serve him in hazoori (considering him present) from paupers into kings. He releases them from the pain of Jam Paas i.e. pain one has to endure when the angels of death tighten the noose around the dying person's neck.)

(The king of the world has taken avtaar; whoever chants the Naam through him gets Sukh (divine bliss). I bow my head and prostrate before him and utter from my mouth "Jai Jai Siri Har Rai".

(I prostrate before Siri Guru Har Rai Sahib jee who does not have any wish. Ones who serve him in Satsangat selflessly, their evil tendencies e.g. Kaam, Krodh etc are relieved by Siri Guru Har Rai Sahib jee and all their wishes are fulfilled.)

The greatness of our Guru Sahib is that he himself is without any worldly wishes or expectations but he fulfills all the wishes of his Sikhs. Vaah!

Dhan Siri Guru Har Rai Sahib jee.

Kulbir Singh
