He who never abandons his weapon (Kirpaan). Recognise them as the disciplined and pure Khalsa.
Rehatnama Bhai Desa Singh
Ive read somewhere that in Guru Gobind Singh Ji's hukams that you shouldnt give your daughter to a clean shaven person and one who does not have weapons.
What I have deduced from history that before 1950's you had to be amritdari to have anand karaj so the singhs would carry 3' Kirpan (maybe bibia to havent seen any photo evidence but doesnt mean they didnt carry them), then they relaxed the rehat so you can get married but you promise to the sangat that you will take amrit soon after you are married. The sad story is that how we are now, no one promises anything to Guru Sahib, carrying a kirpan, growing a trimmed beard and wearing a dastar is a ritual as soon as they leave the gurdwara is shave, put kirpan aside, and dastar off to party, drink and eat meat.
In terms of carry shastar is a great rehat but let us also learn the vidya of how to use them otherwise were just sheep in lion's clothing.
