Why is the letter yayaa ਯ only used in the beginning of words in Gurbani?


Why do we recite gian instead of Gyan or vidhia instead of Vidya?

The letter is not used only in beginning of words in Gurbani but used in the middle as well as in the end.

What I meant to say is why is the Y sound pronounced in the beggining of Gurbani instead of the middle.
Example we say GIan instead of Gyan. It seems like the letter ਯ is a constanant when written in the beginning but serves as short vowel in the middle and end. Why is the letter ਯ gupt in words like gyan?
