How is the Jathedar of Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib chosen?

I am curious about the procedure. Is there some sort of Gurmata passed, or is there a minimum qualification required? Who chooses the Jathedar? What credentials are kept in mind when choosing? Who has the authority to choose? Etc. etc.

SGPC President appoints the Jathedaar. They sometimes do a formal general house meeting to get approval but most of the time executive or interim committee approves to appoint.

Besides above Jathedaar Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib is SGPC paid employee, who collects his monthly paycheck standing in lines before cashier's desk. Recently they have improved this after hearing some harsh comments from Sangat.

But how is it supposed to be done?
How was is it done in Chardi Kala times?
