How Bheesham Pitamah got Salvation

Posted by Kulbir Singh
Those who have read Mahabharata know that Bheesham Pitamah is one of the most interesting character of this story. He is unbeatable and the strongest person of Mahabharata whom even Arjun with all help from Siri Krishna could not kill and defeat. The legendary and all-powerful Parshuram who destroyed Kshatryas 21 times from Earth and who was unbeatable and was even an Avtar of Vishnu, and was the teacher of the Pitamah, could not beat him and lost battle to him. Then finally, when he did get killed, it was because of a trick that Siri Krishna played as a result of which, he dropped his weapons. In this state of being weaponless, Arjun at the behest of Siri Krishna killed him. It was morally a wrong thing to do but without Martyring Bheesham PItamah, winning the war for Pandavs was impossible. Its through such treacherous acts, that this war was won.

In any case, while doing Vichaar on Bhatt Savaie, an amazing Pankiti came in front of the eyes:

ਸੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਗੰਗੇਵ ਪਿਤਾਮਹ ਚਰਣ ਚਿਤ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸਿਆ ॥

Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee, has done the following Vichaar on this Pankiti:

Loose Translation: By doing Simran (chanting) of that Naam (Gurmat Naam) and through Charans (Lotus Feet) of Guru Nanak Amardaas, the son of Ganga - Bheesham Pitamah's mind got drenched with Amrit. Salvation of that Bheesham Pitamah occurred in this Kalyug only when he took birth and came to the refuge of Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee and from the door of Guru Nanak he received the initiation of Gurmat Naam. Even today, all those who are coming to the refuge of authentic Naam Abhyaasi Punj Pyare of Guru Nanak Dasmesh, they are great sages of previous lives. They become candidates of Amrit and Naam due to their previous good Karma (sanjogs).

Gurmat Vichaar: Two things are very clear from this passage of Bhai Sahib jee. Firstly, Bheesham Pitamah had to take birth as a Sikh and receive Naam Amrit in order to get salvation. We don't know which Sikh of Guru Sahib was Bheesham Pitamah but one thing is for sure that he was born and got salvation prior to the period of Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee because by the time Bhatt Baani was manifested in this world, he had already got salvation through Guru Sahib. Most likely, he got salvation through Siri Guru Amardaas jee because this Pankiti appears in the Savaie of third Mahalla.

Second interesting concept that comes out of Bhai Sahib jee's passage is that even today, ones who are coming to the refuge of Naam Abhyaasi Punj Pyare, they are great holy souls of ancient times. It's not as if someone was a dog in his previous live and all of sudden he becomes a Sikh in this life. Only great souls of previous times come to the house of Guru Nanak Dev jee to get salvation.

This also proves that no matter how high one rises within different religions and sects; salvation is possible only when one meets Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee and follows Gurmat of Guru Sahib. There is no other way. If salvation had been possible without Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee, then there was no point in Avtaar of Guru Sahib.

This is true Raam Chander had two sons and one of them was Bhai Daya Singh Ji the first panj pyaara . He was a great warrior and sage and the famous city in ancient Punjab known as "Lahore" is named after him. ALso Bhai Dharam SIngh Ji the second Panj Pyaarey was Bhagat Dhanna Ji in previous anam. All panj pyaarey were bhagats in previous life, because as Bhai Sahib has mentioned previous Bhagtis could not get sach khand liberation without being born in the house of Guru Nanak Sahib.

I don't think Bhagat Dhanna jee or other Bhagats whose Baani is in Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee, needed to be born again because they were already Pooran (perfect). The proof of their Avastha is the fact that they brought Dhur kee Baani in this world. The Bhagats had already met Siri Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee, while they were in their human body. It is advised that the book on Bhagat Baani Itihaas written by Giani Gurdit Singh be read keenly to understand this concept.

With respect to Lav, the son of Raam Chander, born as Bhai Daya Singh, no one knows for sure. All we know is that Bhai Daya Singh jee and other 4 Punj Pyare were super Gursikhs.

According to BHai Chaupa SIngh Jis rehatnama, Sri Gurmukh Parkash, and Sri Guru Panth Parkarsh, some of the Bhagats ( Naam Dev Ji, Dhaana Ji, Sain Ji) were reborn as Panj Pyaarey.

Contents of historical books can be accepted only if in accordance to Gurmat. Same holds true for Rehitnamas too.

In the early 1980s, Sura Parivar (AKJ) published a book that covered the topic of accepting only Gurmat teachings of Rehitnamas. As an example, many Rehitnamas state that the Bajjar Kurehit is to do fornication with a Muslim woman but this does not mean that illicit relations can be made with non-Muslim women. Bhai Sahib has written that just as Panth has done Sudhaaee of such Rehitnamas and accepted Bajjar Kurehit to be illicit relationship with any woman other than wife, same way, eating any kind of meat (not only Halal) is a Bajjar Kurehit.

Bhagat Sahibaan were fully Mukat and this is why through them Dhur Kee Baani manifested in this world. They did not need to be reborn again.

How is Bhagats being reborn going against Gurmat.

If we are quick to deny Bhai Chuapa SIngh Jis rehatnama then we
deny Keski as Kakkar since BHai Chaupa SIngh Jis rehatnama is
the only rehatnama which gives" keski" kakkar status.

The rehats that say dont do fornication with muslim women are legit . THe meaning
is dont have relations outside of marriage. The same thing with halal.
THe meaning is dont eat meat. The Bajjar Kurehits for a Gursikh
are halal, haram, hajamat, and hookah, and if we apply these meanings
according to their historical context they mean dont have pre-marital relations,
no intoxicants, and meat, and dont remove hair. We cannot deny rehats because
they are written in a poetic language or they are written within a historical context.
The rehats are legit and the meanings are significance to todays time. For example,
there is a rehatnama that say dont eat from the Turk. Many people take this rehatnama
out of the historical context and start to doubt it. The meaning is quite clear dont eat halal ( meat).

Going back to rehtanama which places Lav as Panj Pyaaery. Bachitar Natak and BHai Gurdas Jis writings mentions
the old age deal between sodhi clan, and bedi clan. Bhai Daya Singh in his previous janam was named Lao ( lav) . His descendants started
the Sodhi clan. Sodhi Rai aka Mulak Rai gave up his kingdom to Bedi Clain so he can do Bhagti in the jungle. Bhai Daya Singh Ji the son of Ram CHander . Raam Chander did so much Bhagti he saved 21 generations of his family . GUru Sahib says those who do Bhagti save 21 generations of their family. Sodhi Bans was blessed with Akal Purakhs seva due to their Bhagti.

No one is denying any Rehitnama but what we are saying is that only those teachings of Rehitnamas that are in accordance to Gurmat, should be adopted. One of the Rehitnama contains the Hukam that a Sikh should getup in the morning and bow his head before sun. Are we to accept such Brahmanvaadi teaching? There are even such Rehitnamas that allow for adultery with one's maid, in the absence of one's wife. Such teachings cannot be accepted. I strongly suggest that you get your hands on book on Rehitnamas published by AKJ in 1981 or so.

It seems like someone maliciously doctored our Rehitnamas and historical texts.

The Soora Parivar publication was published some 20 odd years ago. Its very hard to get a copy. My Nana Ji has a copy but unfortunately I dont have a scanner to post up the whole publication. Basically it says any rehat that goes against Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji or Sri Dasam Granth cannot be considered as authentic. This publication does not mention every rehat of the Khalsa or the history of Khalsa; instead it focuses on the four bajjar kurehits. The publication includes and quotes questionable rehats like eating meat and doing drugs by sources such as Gurbilas ( Bhai Sukha Singh) and then refutes such rehats by using Gurbani and other rehatnamey that prohibit eating meat. Basically the point is REhats which contradict Gurbani are not acceptable while those that support Gurbani should be acceptable. What I have said about SOdhi lineage is mentioned in Bachitar Natak

. Bhagats were of different caste just like Panj Pyaarey . In 1699, when GUru Sahib blessed Panj he adopted them as his own son, and said from now on your village is Sri Anandpur Sahib and your lineage is Sodhi ( a warrior caste). Descendents of Sodhi lineage come from Laow ( BHai Daya Singh Jis name in past janam). BHai Gurdas Jis writings a long with Bachitar Natak mention how Gurgaddi was given to Sodhi Lineage.

In Satjug and Treta Jug, caste divisions did not exist. Everyone was a warrior and would fight for righteousness. During Raam Chanders era caste did not exist as well. Everyone was a warrior. In fact, according to Bachitar Natak first man in society was a warrior. Guru Sahib basically reestablished this caste-less warrior society in 1699 and the Panj Pyaarey were of extremely high avasta. In Bhai Nand SIngh Jis rehatnama Guru Sahib says he will destroy the four caste and make them one. Thus he adopted all of us in his family. Having said that anyone who does Panj Pyaarey Seva or conducts Amrit Sanchar should have not a slightest conviction of caste affiliation. In addition they should preach the Kshatri Dharam (warrior way), and live by this conduct themselves.

chatrik jeeo - love your creativity

sticking with the topic - there is no doubt that the Gaddi of Dharm in Kalyug belongs to Guru Nanak Dev Jee Maharaj:

"sab te vadaaa Satguru Nanak -"

isssue is of stick to itveness to the naam and to sow the ultimate Karmic deeds for salvation. Guru Granth Sahib Jee is supreme - we need to take the message out further outwards towards the world of how great our Father is - rather than petty debates.

apologies in advance if offended.

What is the source of this assertion that there was no caste system during the time of Ram Chandra? Have you forgotten the famous story of Bhilni and Rama? Of course there was caste system back then but I don't understand why did you bring up the topic of caste system in this thread? It's important to focus on the topic rather than starting a new topic with every post.

You haven't yet responded why you are so sure that Bhai Daya Singh was Lav in his previous life. Instead you are bringing in the topics of Sodhis and Bedis, which is not the subject of this thread.

If we don't stay focussed on the subject, then nothing will get resolved.

Excellent thoughts NS44 jeeo.

Refer to Sri GUrmukh Parkaash ( section about Panj Pyaarey). If you want to start a new thread after reading this
then by all means do so.

Below is the page , dass assumes he is talking about:

Chatrik is aware the writer of the above"Gurbani Paath Darpan" is Gyani Gurbachan Singh Bindrawale himself, BUT in the light of Gurbani. It is just not accurate at all.

3 bhagats(Bhagat Dhanna,Bhagat Naam Dev ji & Bhagat Sain), whose Bani comes in SatGuroo Granth Sahib Maharaj from the time of Guru Arjan Dev Sahib maharaj are being claimed to have taken "rebirth" at the time of Dasam Patshah. Which is doesnt sound right in anyway.

Only those who had reached Sackhand, did SatGuroo bless to do ucharan of Dhur Ki Bani. Its was SatGuroo's will to bless them with this glory.

For example,Gurbani itself clearly say Bhagat dhanna was Jivan mukht.

Sukhdeep, I suggest you open your eyes WIDE to read this:

Panna 487

It Guru Arjan Dev jees bani. It clearly say he recieved Vahiguroo darshan. Which mean he was already in Sachkhand when 5th SatGuroo wrote wrote this bani. Bhagat Nam Deyv and Bhagat Sain were already in Sachkhand.Period.

If Bheesham Pitamah had been around for a little longer, one can only imagine the Shakti he would have as a tyar bar tyar Khalsa in Guru Sahibs army!

Stories like these really hit the heart and make you appreciate Sikhi. The number of Sikhs in the world are so few, that it makes you appreciate what we have, and all those who even know about Guru Granth Sahib, must have all been amazing Bhagats in their last lives. Also, it makes you realize how far behind we are. People like Bheesham, had amazing amounts of bhagti, without a Satguru, while we who have been blessed with Amrit and have Guru Sahib guiding us, fail to even do minimal amount of Bhagti.

In Jap Ji Sahib, it states that all brave warriors go to Karam khand, does this include those who fight for evil as well?
