1. ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਤਿਲ ਥੋੜੜੇ ਸੰਮਲਿ ਬੁਕੁ ਭਰੀ ॥
ਜੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਹੁ ਨੰਢੜਾ ਤਾਂ ਥੋੜਾ ਮਾਣੁ ਕਰੀ ॥4॥

2. ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਤੂ ਅਕਲਿ ਲਤੀਫੁ ਕਾਲੇ ਲਿਖੁ ਨ ਲੇਖ ॥
ਆਪਨੜੇ ਗਿਰੀਵਾਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਨਂੀਵਾਂ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੁ ॥6॥

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਤਿਲ ਥੋੜੜੇ ਸੰਮਲਿ ਬੁਕੁ ਭਰੀ ॥
Farīḏā je jāṇā ṯil thoṛ▫ṛe sammal buk bẖarī.
Fareed, if I had known that I had so few sesame seeds, I would have been more careful with them in my hands.


ਜੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਹੁ ਨੰਢੜਾ ਤਾਂ ਥੋੜਾ ਮਾਣੁ ਕਰੀ ॥੪॥
Je jāṇā saho nandẖ▫ṛā ṯāʼn thoṛā māṇ karī. (4)
If I had known that my Husband Lord was so young and innocent, I would not have been so arrogant. (4)


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਤੂ ਅਕਲਿ ਲਤੀਫੁ ਕਾਲੇ ਲਿਖੁ ਨ ਲੇਖ ॥
Farīḏā je ṯū akal laṯīf kāle likẖ na lekẖ.
Fareed, if you have a keen understanding, then do not write black marks against anyone else.
ਆਪਨੜੇ ਗਿਰੀਵਾਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਨੀਵਾਂ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੁ ॥੬॥
Āpnaṛe girīvān mėh sir nīʼnvāʼn kar ḏekẖ. (6)
Look underneath your own collar instead. (6)

These panktis bring back fond memories...

1] In the first pankti, Bhagat Ji has used an analogy of sesame seeds to the human breathes. If he knew he had very few swaas left, he would have been more careful and used them wisely. By using them wisely, he means he would have spent more time in simran and kirtan.

har japadhiaa khin dtil n keejee maeree ji(n)dhurreeeae math k jaapai saahu aavai k n aavai raam ||
Do not hesitate for an instant - meditate on the Lord, O my soul; who knows whether he shall draw another breath?


We live in the hope that we will die when we are in old age, however this is a misconception. We don’t know when we will draw our last breath, so we should not waste time.

Second shabad could be about how Vaheguru admires people who adopt humility, and this is a virtue we often ignore, especially when we progress spiritually.

2] I always used to understand this pankti to mean 'don't write black marks in your own karma'... If you understand yourself to be wise, and intelligent then you must be aware not to commit any bad karma. Instead look within yourself, and remain humble.

However, this translation you've given seems to make a lot more sense. We all have a tendency to highlight other people’s faults, and sometimes it results in nindiya. Maybe we should look at our own jeevan, and be humble.

In the translation it states Vaheguru is young and innocent , I've seen this a few times in arth by Gursikhs in various pangtis.
Does this mean Vaehguru is Nirmal and Pure like a child's innocence, we are so meleh and black.

ਜੇ ਫਰੀਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਕਿ ਸਵਾਸ ਰੂਪੀ ਤਿਲ ਥੋੜੇ ਹੀ ਹਨ ਭਾਵ ਸੀਮਤ ਹਨ ਤਾਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕੇ ਵਰਤ (ਸੰਮਲਿ ਬੁਕੁ ਭਰੀ) ਭਾਵ ਸਵਾਸਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਐਵੀਂ ਜ਼ਾਇਆ ਨਾ ਕਰ। ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਕਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਸ਼ਹੁ ਨੰਢੜਾ ਹੈ ਭਾਵ ਬਾਲ ਸੁਭਾਓ ਵਾਲਾ ਭੋਲਾ ਭਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੇ ਮਾਣ ਨਾ ਕਰ ਭਾਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਲਾ ਅਕਲਮੰਦ ਨਾ ਜਾਣ।

Many old Punjabi words are getting lost and one of those words is ਨੰਢਾ (a young boy) or ਨੰਢੀ (a young girl). When I was a child, I often used to hear these words for a boy or girl. In this Salok Baba jee has called Vaheguru a very small boy (ਨੰਢੜਾ) which means that Vaheguru is innocent and pure like a child.

Since we know that Vaheguru jee is a ਨੰਢੜਾ, then why should we act smart and egoistic? A child-like Vaheguru cannot be friends with an egoistic and over-smart adult. If an Adult wants to be friends with a child, then that adult has to become child-like. We can't expect the child to become Adult-like. Same way, since we can't make Vaheguru to be over-smart, egoistic, and proud like us, therefore, we have to shed our over-smartness and pride and be innocent and pure like a child to be friends with Vaheguru jee.


2. ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਤੂ ਅਕਲਿ ਲਤੀਫੁ ਕਾਲੇ ਲਿਖੁ ਨ ਲੇਖ ॥
ਆਪਨੜੇ ਗਿਰੀਵਾਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਨਂੀਵਾਂ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੁ ॥6॥

ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਲਤੀਫ ਅਕਲ ਵਾਲਾ ਭਾਵ ਬਾਰੀਕ ਅਕਲ ਵਾਲਾ ਭਾਵ ਬੁਧੀਮਾਨ ਹੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਕਾਲੇ ਲੇਖ ਭਾਵ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੋਖ ਲਭਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਮਨਮੱਤ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਾਲੇ ਲੇਖ ਨਾ ਲਿਖ। ਸਗੋਂ ਨਿਮ੍ਰਤਾ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਝਾਤੀ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਦੇਖ (ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਿੰਨੇ ਦੋਖ ਹਨ)।

In this Salok Baba Sheikh Farid jee has instructed us to not write "ਕਾਲੇ ਲੇਖ " which means evil writings. What kind of evil writings is Baba jee referring to here? The answer to this lies in the second Pankiti of this Salok whereby Baba jee is instructing us to look within our own selves. When do we get asked to look within our selves? When we point fingers at others and talk about shortcomings of others. So Baba jee here is asking us to stop writing about shortcomings of others and to stop slandering others and instead look within our own self to find our own shortcomings and try to fix them.
