ok fine, both calendars have their flaws. but as far as i understand, the bikrami calendar has a major issue which makes it incompatible with sikhi:
it requires that brahmins set the dates. did guru sahib really want his sikhs to ask brahmins when to celebrate gurpurab? he gave us our own script, re-told old hindu myths in this script, basically made it so we wouldn't be dependent on brahmins for our knowledge of history... would he really want us dependent on those same brahmins for our calendar? in my mind, this is the biggest problem with the bikrami calendar.

While Bikarmi calendar needs to go away due to its inaccuracy and giving fluctuating dates of gurpurabs each year, Nanakshahi too leaves much to be desired. However, Nanakshahi calendar should be adopted for many reasons and must be made error free. It has already been mentioned that Poh Sudi Saptami and Poh 27 this year fall on two different days so Bikarmi itself causes massive confusion over gurpurab dates. So in my lowly opinion, scholars need to fix the dates of the gurpurabs on the original dates that they first occurred on. Scholars claim that the first gurpurab of Guru Gobind Singh Ji was on December 22nd. So this date (if accurate) must be adopted in Nanakshahi calendar and March 30th for Khalsa Pargat Diwas, so on and so forth. Such known dates which are already well known shouldn’t be based on any year be it 1469 or 1999 as this will lead to inaccuracies. Rather these dates can be used to construct a model for other dates. I think a model of at least 10 Bikarmi years (5 past and 5 future) should be made. For example, we know that in Gregorian calendar a certain date moves one day ahead for every upcoming year and two days after February 29th in a leap year. It goes in reverse for past years in a same pattern. Although it is not as easy in Bikarmi calendar but a model on similar lines can be made. From this model we can derive a pattern of how the dates shift and when “inauspicious” month occurs. If a program can determine months of Bikarmi for the next 13,000 years in accordance with Gregorian then a program can be coded to determine dates of the past 500 years. It seems as though Mr. Purewal took the easy route and based his calendar on 1999 along with taking inaccurate dates of gurpurabs from popular sources rather than more accurate sources. For example, three purabs falling on the same day last year was entirely based on Mahan Kosh while all the Gurparnalis give different dates. Using the model, we should be able to get fairly close to the exact dates and by using the exact Gregorian dates (30th March, 22nd December etc) known for bikarmi dates, probability of error can be further reduced. It may not be easy but it is not impossible either.

For the gurpurab date, most sources give the date as Poh Sudi 7. Guru Rakha.

Bikrami calendar is not a Brahmin calendar. Brahmin calendar is saka calendar. had it been a brahmin calendar Pakistan Punjab would not ahve used it. It is a calendar of the region.

Our Gurus have used this calendar as we find its mention in our scriptures. Who are we to disown our heritage.

Just as day, night, sun and moon are not brahmin likewise no calendar is brahmin. We should not become a victim of hate unknowingly.

Old sikh calendar from our Gurus time to the end of rule of mahraja ranjit singh was samvat calendar. Sikhs had no problem in observance of their days per that. Sole reason for that was that our civilization was intact and had not sccumbed to Western effects.

Inspite of the fact that Christian calendar was prevalent in india during Guru period our Guru sahibans and historians did not
succumb to western influence. Neither did they feel the need to see sikh calendar through Gregorian calendar glasses.

One western writer, walter E .Von , wrote in 1926 in acta orientalia volume 4 as below

I sncerely hope that leading Indian calendar makers, astronomers, and mathematicians will keep their principle reckoning as pure as it is now.

Which calendar is more accurate or suitable for the Sikhs should be determined by Gurmat jeevanwalay GurSikhs who are also specialists in mathematics, physics, and astronomy, because those are the skills required to work on such a calendar. I don't think we have very many in the Panth with those qualifications.

What is disturbing about the whole calendar controversy is not the calendars themselves, but the way entire issue has been mis-handled to the ਘੜਮ ਚੌਧਰੀ ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਠੇਕੇਦਾਰ of the Panth.

Bhai Inder Singh Ji, thank you for having the courage in referring to the new calendar enacted by the SGPC as "Bikrami" calendar because that is what it is- but why isn't the SGPC calling it as such?

The SGPC, Jathedar Gurbachan Singh, and the Sant Samaj has not had the courage to call it a "Bikrami" calendar, they are still telling the Sikh Panth that it is the 2003 Nanakshahi Calendar issued from Sri Akal Takht Sahib with a few "ਸੋਧਾਂ" (amendments). We all now it is not.

Isn't that called LYING? Not just LYING to themselves, but to the entire Panth. Here are the exact headlines from the newspapers:

ਨਾਨਕਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਕੈਲੰਡਰ ’ਚ ਪ੍ਰਸਤਾਵਿਤ ਸੋਧਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਨਗੀ (Ajit Jan 4, 2010)
(Ajit Jan 5, 2010)
(Ajit Jan 4, 2010)

Note the keyword ਸੋਧਾਂ (amendments). To discard, and replace is NOT to amend. When panj piyarays do ਸੋਧਾਈ of an individuals, they do not replace the individual with another one, they help the person amend their way so they can improve themselves in Gurmat. So what ਸੋਧਾਈ was done to this calendar? Can anyone answer that?

Everyone knows that this calendar is NOT an amended 2003 Nanakshahi Calendar. The 2003 Nanakshahi Calendar was FULLY discarded, not single characteristic of that calendar was re-used. But, the Panth was NOT told that. It was told that this was an "amended" 2003 Nanakshahi Calendar.

If Bikrami Calendar is the perfect calendar for the Sikhs then SGPC, Jathedar Gurbachan Singh, and the Sant Samaj should have the guts to say that, but they did not. They lied to the Panth, how can that be acceptable?

There is no room for falsehood and deceit in the court of the Almighty

Where does this leave SGPC, Jathedar Gurbachan Singh, and the Sant Samaj? How can such a calendar be promoted when it was sold on the foundations of deception?

Just wait, if the Sant Samaj has their way, the SGPC will use the same type of deception to discard the Akal Takht Maryada of 1935/45 and replace it with their own dera maryada under the guise of "Panthic Maryada". Just as they have done disguising Bikrami with the label of "Nanakshahi"

Bhai niranjan singh ji

There are some facts we should know about the calendar sikhs were following earlier and the one that was imposed by
Purewal.

Calendar of Punjab region was known as malwa samvat. It was not started by any Raja Bikramdittye but by militant tribes of
Punjab.

Biramdittaye is not name of any King but it refers to a title and there have been about eight Bikramdittye in India.First one appeared after 800 years of the making of Malwa Calendar which later was given Bikrami name.

Before Purewal's Nanakshahi calendar, sikh calendar had Nanakshahi samvat in practice. It has reference in Oxford dictionary of World religions as follows

" The sikhs religious calendar is a modified form of Bikrami calendar. The year is solar ( 23 minutes, 44 seconds, shorter than the christian year) and the months are lunar. Lunar months varying within fifteen days, are used for gurpurabs---. Because of the discrepancy between the bikrami and solar years these dates advance one day in sixty seven years."

p. 118

Unquote

This is the calendar our Gurus had followed and is recoded in our scriptures, Gurus Hukamnamas, rehatnamas and sikh history.

Year adopted by Purewal for his calendar was tropical year or seasonal year. That year's length is different from the one being followed by Sikh calendar earlier. Apart from that base year for his calendar is 1999. Guru Nanak dev ji was born
in 1469. So purewal has omitted 530 years.

When asked if he applied corrections to those 530 years , his reply was no. How can he do that when he is following a different measure of time. That is outright fraud and any person with common sense can understand that..

Bhai sahib Bhai Randhir singh's grandson is my close relative( My Kurram). He is a professor of mathematics holding Ph. D. in maths. and had astronomy as special subject. We asked him about correctness of dates of Purewal calendar with specific reference to Jan 5 being birthday of Guru gobind singh ji in 1699. He told this is big lie played by Purewal on sikhs and his other many dates for example Gurgaddi to guru Angad are also dead wrong.

If you live in USA i can arrange a meeting with Bhai sahib when he visits us and you can have as many clarifications as you desire from him.

Now this is from a neutral expert of this field who is no way connected with Damdami taksal which is being blamed for these amendments. As sikhs we should follow truth and call a spade a spade. Love for panth is supreme before our affiliations.

It is important to know that Bikrami calendar had its beginning month as Kartik and our sikh calendar ( Nanaksahi Samvat) had the starting month as chet.

Sikh academics have proofs that starting from guru angad Dev ji to guru gobind Singh ji, Mata sahib devan ji, Mata Sundri ji,
Baba Banda baHadar ji to maharaja ranjit singh ji all datyes are refrred from this calendar.

Amvas and pooranmashi are mentioned in Sri guru Granth sahib ji. So in no way they become brahmin as they are connected with movement of moon around earth.

It is disgusting to note how SGPC failed in its duty in 2003 at the behest of IOSS, Chandigarh to substitute calendar of sikhs by Pal Singh's Purewal's flawed calendar.

Bhai Inder Singh Ji,

Kindly re-read my previous post, I am NOT interested in debating with you about which calendar is accurate or better. The point of my post was that the new calendar adopted by the SGPC is NOT an amended 2003 Nanakshahi, it is the ORIGINAL Bikrami. Therefore, the SGPC, Jathedar Gurbachan Singh, and the Sant Samaj, all LIED to the PANTH when they implemented this calendar, so shouldn't they come clean about this deception?

Do you agree they LIED? My discussion was never about which calendar is better, it is about the manner it was introduced.

My question to you is: Do you believe it is appropriate to LIE, MISLEAD, and DECEIT the Panth for such a cause?

I have no personal interest in either calendar. Calendars just provide references and for dates, just like weights, and other measurements - they do not hold any special religious value in Sikhi.

Along with several other Singhs, I had the opportunity to spend quite a few hours discussing the whole calendar controversy with proponents of both calendars. Particularly, with Dr. Anurag Singh (son of Dr. Trilochan Singh Ji), Bhai Baljinder Singh Rara Sahib (appointed by SGPC as their calendar 'expert'), and also Bhai Pal Singh Purewal. These are all members of the original 2003 team formed by the SGPC. There seems to be personality conflict between all three of them, so it is no surprise that they could not come to a unanimous conclusion in 2003 or now 2010.

On a personal note, I was not convinced by either side, they both seem to have faults in their theories. Interestingly, Dr. Anurag Singh no longer supports the new SGPC Bikrami version because he contends that it still contains a lot of miscalculations and inaccuracies. He and Baljinder Singh do not even see eye to eye on the origin of the Bikrami calendar. It is clear that none of these individuals are interested in listening to the other side, and resolving this issue.

The deception by the SGPC, Jathedar Gurbachan Singh, and the Sant Samaj, is not helping the matter either.

Dr Anurag singh is the main drafter of these amendments. I know him personally and have met him the latest meeting
being in May 2010.

It is wrong on part of SGPC if they are hiding anything from public. It was doubly wrong for Purewal
having taken sikhs for a ride on this issue and eaten over 500 years of our history. We become collaborators if we support his flawed calendar.

Bhai Nirajan Singh Jio,

Waheguru Ji ka khalsa, Waheguru Ji ki Fateh

Thanks for sharing more inside and valuable information. Your information concreted what Daas had in mind. Personally Daas too do not care much what calender to follow but the way Jathedaar Gurbachan Singh, SGPC President and Sant party played unilateral role on imposing the calender really needed to be condemned for the sake of preserving Panthic principles. I would also like to echo your thought that

and smell is there. May Guru Sahib give us Smat to be more of His nimaanay Sikhs than actors of power shows.

Sikhs have discarded Vissa, Chassa, Pal, Gharees, Paa, Seer, Kacha/Pakka Mann, Koh, Vigha, Yojan etc then sticking to an old calendar that is inaccurate and does not give consistent dates is merely an excuse. Guru Sahib used the calendar that was being used at the time just like other measurements. Neither does it have anything to do with its accuracy nor did it become sanction by Guru Sahib. Calendar is not part of any rehat. Bottom line is that Sikhs need an accurate calendar with fixed dates which is why I think original dates need to be calculated. There is nothing wrong with a new calendar or old calendar modified. Pal Singh made a mistake but his intentions were to fix the dates. Sant Samaj and deras have discarded old (time, weight, distance) measurements that are mentioned in Gurbani and it is hypocritical of them to make excuses for the old calendar. They should adopt all the aspects of old lifestyle to have any credibility to their argument.

Heartiest congratulations to sangat on birthday of Dasam Pita sahib Guru Gobind Singh ji.

DOHRA

I stood up with folded hands and bowing down my head, I said:

ਪੰਥ ਚਲੈ ਤਬ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਜਬ ਤੁਮ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਹਾਇ ॥੩੦॥
पंथ चलै तब जगत मै जब तुम करहु सहाइ ॥३०॥
The path (Panth) shall prevail only in the world, with THY ASSISTANCE."30.

CHAUPI

For this reason the Lord sent me and I was born in this world.

Whatever the Lord said, I am repeating the same unto you, I do not bear enmity with anyone.31.

Whosoever shall call me the Lord, shall fall into hell.

Consider me as His servant and do not think of any difference between me and the Lord.32.

I am the servant of the Supreme Purusha and hath come to see the Sport of the world.

Whatever the Lord of the world said, I say the same unto you, I cannot remain silent in this abode of death.33.

Vadhayee of Gurpurab to everyone.

I think what laadlifauj means is that we should learn the measurements listed in Gurbani and we should have clear understanding of what bikarmi years listed in our scriptures correspond to even if such measurements and calendar are not as accurate or not is use anymore.

Personally, I think any day when a Gursikh wakes up early and is totally Imbued In Naam Rass is what any parent such as Siri Guru Gobind Singh and Mata Sahib Kaur would wish from their children. Them days automatically become special days, and if any soul does not do that, they can call any day a Gurpurb, argue about it and it matters little.

Siri Guru Gobind Singh jees Gurpurb can only truely be celebrated on the day a soul is immersed in Naam Rang all day long.
