Most gurudwara sahibs in USA are celebrating Gurpurab of Dasam pita on Jan 11( Poh sudi satvi) per traditional date set up khalsa panth from the beginning.

May be Mehtab singh ji is waiting for that.

Let's be realistic - most Gurdwaras in the USA are observing the Gurpurab of Sri Dasam Patshah on January 5th, and not being a weekend the actual celebrations of the Gurpurab are occurring on weekend January 7/8th.

Most of the Gurdwaras that are observing on the 11th are the ones controlled by Akali Dal Badal, Mehta Taksal, Nanaksar and other deras.

The Gurdwarai that are celebrating on January 11, are those that FOLLOW the Akaal Takhat, the rest are going against the Akaal Takhat.

Our tiny Sangat of Amritvela asked Guru Sahib jee this morning for their Hukam on this Aagman purab of Dasam Patshah, following is what Guru Sahib’s sandesh roopi Hukamnama came:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੮॥੧॥

This brought tears to Daas that how relevant Hukam Guru Sahib have given which shows the vadiayee of Sachay Satguru Jee and His Gurmanter and how mamukhs like daas are indulged in moh maya and vaad vivaad. In the end Guru Sahib do not care whether we celebrate Gurpurab today or another day all Guru Sahib like is:

ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭਾਏ ਜੋ ਇਛੈ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੮॥੧॥

Vaah mere Guru Dhan tu(n) Dhan teri Vadee kamaiyee, I humbly beg for Naam Sharan forever. Although the original Hukam was in Laaridaar format, Daas ask for forgiveness of wrong Paddshed and word appears differently due to technical limitation.

With Regards,
Daas

The following link says that Guru sahib's birthday is being celebrated on Jan 11 in all New york gurudwaras. Go to page 3. It says that 98 to 99 percent Gurudwaras of New york are following calendar from akal takhat and celebrating Gurpurab on January 11.

There is no surprise on this as this is as per directive of akal takhat.

In fact Mehtab Singh and his Gurdwara Sangat celebrated it on Jan 2nd already, and will celebrate again on Jan 9th, and then again on Jan 11th as well.

One day is not enough for us to celebrate our Pita Jee's aagaman divas. Therefore I was going to wish everyone after celebrating it 3 times...on Jan 11th.

But anyways, for those Gurmukh piyaare who want to celebrate today...Gurpurab diyaan lakh lakh vadhaiyaan.

Unjaan Jee,

So are you saying those who celebrate Sri Dasam Patshah's Gurpurab on the 5th are manmukhs, and those who celebrate on the 11th gurmukhs?
Jathedar Iqbal Singh of Patna Sahib added that those people are "Panth Dokhees".

What about the majority in the western world who will be celebrating during the weekend of the 8th/9th? How are the classified.

So last year everyone was a Gurmukh for celebrating on the on the 5th, and now they are manmukhs?

Be it the 5th or the 11th, if we don't gain any "Parkash" from our Guru Sahib's Parkash Purab, and instead spend our energies dragging the Panth into this ridiculous controversy - then aren't we all manmukhs?

Guru Gobind Singh Ji in His Banee clearly describes the criteria of a Gurmukh: ਪੂਰਨ ਜੋਤ ਜਗੈ ਘਟ ਮੈ ਤਬ ਖਾਲਸ ਤਾਹਿ ਨਖਾਲਸ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
How many of us have the Parkash of this internal Jot? How is celebrating on a particular day going to help us in this manner?

Technically both 23 Poh (Jan 5) and Poh Sudi Saptami (Jan 11 this year) are correct days for Gurpurab because the year Siri Guru jee took Avtaar, both of these days fell on one day.

gsingh jio,

The Gurdwarai that are celebrating on January 11, are those that FOLLOW the Akaal Takhat, the rest are going against the Akaal Takhat.

No one is against Sri Akal Takhat Sahib by celebrating Gurpurab on 5th of January. In fact by observing on January 5th majority of Sikh Sangat kept the honor of Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib. According to Jathedaar Joginder Singh Jee Vedenti in 2003 Nanakshahi calendar was approved from Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib in the presence of 5 Jathedaar including Jathedaar Balwant Singh Nandgarrh of Takhat Sri Damdama Sahib, Jathedaar Tirlochan Singh of Takhat Sri KeshGarrh Sahib and after approval it was given to SGPC for printing in other words Sri Akal Takhat Sahib had directed to adopt and print the Nanakshahi calendar. This makes sense. However, in January 2010 changes to calendar were ordered (directed) to Sri Akal Takhat Jathedaar by SGPC president Sardar Makkar and Dhumma to put the seal of approval and Jathedaar Gurbachan Singh under pressure as a rubber stamp did exactly what they wanted. Which means Makkar and Dhumma are higher than Sri Akal Takhat Sahib. None were consulted and no other Jathedaar was present in meeting including Takhat Damdama Sahib and Takhat KeshGarrh Sahib only Granthis came to full fill formality of five numbers.

Is it is not dishonor by ordering to Sri Akal Takhat Sahib? That is why awaked Sikh Sangat celebrated on January 5th to keep the honor of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib and not honoring the Dhumma Shaap calendar. Hence who ever are in advocacy of celebrating Gurpurab on 11th would be honoring some persons Makkar and Dhumma (RSS) not Sri Akal Takhat Sahib. Any Sikh who honors Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib shall not bend down before Dhumma Shaap calendar. It is a great insult to our Prime institution by following imposed 3rd party calendar. Again in the end Guru Sahib does not care whether you celebrate on 5th or 11th all they cares is:

ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭਾਏ ਜੋ ਇਛੈ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੮॥੧॥

and as Bhai Niranjan Singh Jee mentioned:

"Be it the 5th or the 11th, if we don't gain any "Parkash" from our Guru Sahib's Parkash Purab, and instead spend our energies dragging the Panth into this ridiculous controversy - then aren't we all manmukhs?"

Choice is yours.

Daas feels highly obligated to Jathedaar Bhai Ranjit Singh Jee and Jathedaar Bhai Joginder Singh Jee vedanti to letting us aware about the politics going on Khalsa Panth’s prime institutions.

With Regards,
Daas

Bhai Jasjit Singh, i think it would be better if you didnt refer to baba harnam singh as dhumma, if you dont like him atleast call him bhai harnam singh or harnaam singh.

at the end i was just saying what the akaal takhat says. celebrate the gurpurab when you want to, or celebrate it twice, the more the better.

Guru sahib took Avtaar on poh sudi Saptmi. This day is connected with phases of moon. Hence it cann't be assigned
a permanent date in the same way as Good Friday cann't be allotted a fixed date. This is very simple to understand.

The extent of fraud played on sikhs by Purewal calendar is coming out slowly. Purewal gave sikhs a solar calendar whereas all religions of world follow lunar calendar. His calendar is Indian Govt calendar which is hybrid of saka and gregorian.

Purewal based his calendar with starting year as 1999. When asked if he applied corrections to previous over five hundred years. he had no answer. The following videos reveal all this.

We are prepared to host him live on JUS Punjabi TV where expert of this field will ask him questions so that sangat shopuld know truth. We tried to bring him in but our efforts have failed so far. May be those who propagate his calendar may help us.This is an effort for panthic cause.

Jaskirat Singh jeeo,

In the year Siri Guru jee took Avtaar, it was 23rd Poh and the moon was 7th day towards Pooniya (full moon). Sudi means when the moon grows towards Puniya and Vadi means that the moon moves towards Masiya. 23rd Poh tells us the relationship of Earth and Sun and Poh Sudi Saptami tells us the position of Earth and Moon. It so happened that these two occurences i.e. 23 Poh and Sudi Saptami happened on the same day but this can't happen every year. As an example, this year the Poh Sudi Saptami is on January 11 but Poh 23 is on Jan 5.

Some calenders in the world are purely lunar e.g. the Hijri Calender (Islamic) and some like the Julian one are purely Solar. The Bikrami calender is nor fully Lunar and nor fully solar. It's a hybrid calender. It is quite an intelligent calender given the fact that it was created more than 2000 years but the current English calender is more accurate. The Bikrami calender is not fully accurate (as per some scholars) and this will result in current summer months like Haar and Saavan appearing in Winter, some thousands years later.

Nanakshahi Calender (Purewal) was an attempt to use Desi months and at the same time base this calender on the current English calender so that it becomes a more practical calender for Sikhs. It is true that everything is not perfect in this calender but a further attempt by scholars can wrinkle out the problems and then we can have a truly accurate Nanakshahi calender because the current Nanakshahi calender does not have dates that are fully accurate. The reason is an adjustment that was made to the Julian calender few hundred years ago, whereby some days were skipped to bring that calender accurate. This has caused major problems for us today.

In any case, Daas does not know what the solution is to this problem. The ones who want to see Poh Sudi Saptami on Siri Guru Gobind Singh jee's Avtaar Purab, will have hard time seeing 23 Poh. One of these two natural happenings will have to be sacrificed. The Nanakshahi Calender (Purewal) sacrifices the Poh Sudi Saptami (position of Moon) and the Lunar Calender will not jive with 23 Poh. What to do? I don't know.

Guru Nanak dev ji was born on kartika pooranmashi or katak puniya. This indicates month of kartik and moon is in full phase.

Poh sudi satmi does indicate month of poh and seven days shorter of Puarnamashi.

These days are connected with phases of moon and hence no fixed date can be assigned to these.

Calendar being followed in Punjab is called samvat calendar. It was developed by militant people of Punjab and is practiced in both Punjabs namely Pakistan Punjab and Indian Punjab. This is a regional calendar of that region and other states of India follow a different calendar.

Our Gurus have written dates of this calendar in our scriptures.

It was Samvat 1753;

This book was competed on the banks of Sutlej on Sunday, the eighth Sudi of the month of Bhadon.

Dasam Granth sahib

Our new year starts with month of chet. The common mistake being committed by western academics is that they superimpose this calendar ofnChristan Calendar and say this gurpurab has come twice in one year. That is not correct. Our Gurpurabs should be seen solely on the basis of our calendar only.

What you talking about? With advance technology in place America landed on moon more than half a century ago. If you are serious about knowing those so called phases of moon bring it to NASA they will let you know the one thousandth part of it. Can not believe some people are still living in Stone Age and creating Stone Age atmosphere on this forum too.

This has no relevance to the subject. Point being made was that was Guru nanak dev ji was born on full moon night. So if you pre assign a day to his birhtday, it may fall on a night when there is no full moon.

That is why example of Good Friday was given. Good friday will be on a day when it is Friday.

So it is not practical to assign a date to them. Had Pal singh Purewal this technology he would have used it.
And he would also have taken starting year of his caledar as birth year of Guru Nanak dev ji's i.e. 1469 and not 1999.

And above all what business had he to change a calendar that is so prominently mentioned in our scriptures, rehatnamas, historical monuments and Hukamnamas.

For example

DOHRA

This Granth (book) has been prepared after revision in Paonta city on Wednesday in Sawan Sudi Samvat 1744. 983.

Thanks for reply Bhai Sahib, I must say quite confusing

I think if everyone got together and tuned up the Nanakshai Calender that would be great, I mentioned this previously over in this thread as well [gurmatbibek.com] but who knows if that will happen.

Sad that we are split on these date issues as well as other controversial matters, I guess in good time in Guru Jee's bhana they will all get cleared up.
