Many Gursikhs ask how does the Basanti colour looks like. The flowers in the picture below are of Basanti colour, the best colour for Keski, as per Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee:

This colour is different from the Orange/Bhagva colour that is common for Keskis now a days. Singhs should try using the Basanti colour instead of Kesri colour for their Keskis.

Lately ive been thinking what if Panj Pyaarey told you Khalsa colors include: Orange, White, Black, and Blue?
Even thought Panj Pyaarey has given me the right to wear orange, I personally dont wear orange and prefer the traditional Khalsa color yellow, but I think it would be dishonoring Guru Sahibs hukum if I wear yellow.

Thank you Bhai Sahib Jio for informing Gursikh sangtan!

Normally Daas ties a blue Keski at all times, over which Daas ties a Blue Dastaar. Is that also fine?

depends where you live singh

in Punjab, most people will understand basant or basanti

if you say kesree, a lot of shopkeepers actually pull this color out

(they are knowledgeable man)

up here (Toronto), i had to tell them "yellow" and I got it

What is the importance of this colour rather than Orange?

The reason why Basanti is preferred over Orange is because Basanti is one of the four accepted colours of Khalsa. Other 3 colours of Khalsa are Blue, White and Black. Black became an accepted colour as a result of the Akali movement of the early 1900s.

if keseri is not a khalsa color, why are nishan sahib's keseri? why do panj piyaras wear keseri? when did basanti change to keseri?

Nishan Sahibs became Kesri just like Keskis became Kesri. Some Sikh thinkers think that it was the part of strategy of fundamental Hindu organizations to Hinduize the Sikh faith. Kesri and Bhagwa are Hindu colours, not Sikh colours.

yeah, i wondered if it had anything to do with that... i thought the keseri nishan sahib might have come about during the time of the mahants running the gurdwaras... and somehow just never got "fixed".
thanks!

According to the SGPC published Sikh Rehit Maryada, the colour of Nishan Sahib should be Basanti. Below is the exact passage:

ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕੇ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਬਸੰਤੀ ਜਾਂ ਸੁਰਮਈ ਹੋਵੇ ਤੇ ਸਿਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਸਰਬਲੋਹ ਦਾ ਭਾਲਾ ਜਾਂ ਖੰਡਾ ਹੋਵੇ।

The English translation of the above is:

The colour of the cloth of Nishan Sahib should be Basanti (Xanthic) or Surmai (Navy Blue) and on the top there should be Sarbloh spear or Khanda.

Vah jee vah. We must all get our bodies decked out in the Basanti rang after this thread, and our minds in the suhee manjeenTh rang of naam.

Bhai Jasjit Singh Jee has written article on the Nishaan Sahib colour: [www.gurmatbibek.com] , I know that Bhai Sahib's time is a bit tight at the moment, as is mine, so maybe a translation in the future if Guru Jee allows.

Also, for further reference for the sangat, please could Bhai Tanvir Singh Jee take a nice photograph of the basanti colour cloth, next to standard orange cloth, next to navy blue cloth, on a pure white background and post it up on the forum? Many thanks smiling smiley!

Bhai Jaskirat Singh Jee and Other Sangat Ji,

Daas has tried to upload the photos of the varying dastaar colors.

Please forgive bad image quality or distortion in the photographs.

Photography and imaging are certainly not my cup of tea.

This Image Shows All Three Colors Requested (Navy Blue, The Basanti, and Popular Kesree)
All Three Comparison

This Image Shows The Comparison Between Basanti and Kesree
Kesree Vs. Basanti (Basanti Wins) (1)

This Image Shows Another Angle Of Both Colors
Comparison

This Image Shows The Ideal Colors For Keskee And Dastaar As Per Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir Singh Ji
Kesree Vs. Basanti (Basanti Wins) (2)

A Point to note,
navy blue is also known as "Surmai" in gurmukhi.
It is one of the darkest shades of blue available in kapra stores.
And Like here, it can be mistaken for black in photographs or from distance.

If in Punjab, ask for Basanti & Surmai
If Abroad, ask for Lemon Yellow & Navy Blue (not royal blue)

Tanvir Singh Ji,
You got it mixed. Basanti is the middle dastar from the first picture and the left one in the second picture.

No trouble at all jee
Daas was happy to help.

If this color makes a comeback in our panth, which was the aim of the post, then what else can we ask?
