ਮਾਨੁ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਤਾਨੁ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਧਨੁ ਲਖਮੀ ਸੁਤ ਦੇਹ ॥੧॥

Daas is very confused between the thin line between ਮਾਨੁ/ਤਾਨੁ and Haume. I feel these 2 drives me differently under different situations. Want to understand the thin line between the 2. Where does ਮਾਨੁ/ਤਾਨੁ stand up and take a stand ? And where does Haume be pushed back and Nimrata should lead ?

An example is below where first Pankti requests guru sahib for ਮਾਨੁ/ਤਾਨੁ and second one advises to completely asks for the TYAG of these.

ਮਾਨੁ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਤਾਨੁ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਧਨੁ ਲਖਮੀ ਸੁਤ ਦੇਹ ॥੧॥

AND

For example, if the Sangat feels you are somewhere wrong but you feel you are not. What would be the correct stand as per Gurmat ? Considering Sangat is supreme and also not forgetting (my views) -- hard for Nimana to do Bhagti as well.

Pls do kirpa and give the views !!

Excellent Question!

The word ਮਾਨੁ has at least three meanings. If we interpret all Gurbani Pankitis where this word appears, with the same meaning, then we are sure to get misled. Gurbani contains words from many different sources and for this reason, many times, each word comes in many meanings.

1. One meaning of Maan is ਅਭਿਮਾਨ which means ਗਰੂਰ, ਗਰਬ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ, ਹੰਕਾਰ. In other words, many times the word ਮਾਨ comes as a short form of the word ਅਭਿਮਾਨ. One of the Pankiti that talks about this meaning of the word ਮਾਨ is - ਸਾਧੋ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਮਾਨੁ ਤਿਆਗਉ ॥

2. Another meaning of the word ਮਾਨ is ਪਤਿ, ਇਜ਼ਤ, ਸ਼ਰਮ. To ask for ਪਤਿ, ਇਜ਼ਤ, or ਸ਼ਰਮ in this world and the next world is perfectly in accordance to Gurmat. In Siri Rehraas Sahib, in the last Shabad before Siri Chaupai Sahib, we ask for Sharma (meaning ਪਤਿ, ਇਜ਼ਤ, ਸ਼ਰਮ). One of the Pankiti that talks about this meaning of the word ਮਾਨ is - ਮਾਨੁ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਤਾਨੁ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਧਨੁ ਲਖਮੀ ਸੁਤ ਦੇਹ ॥੧॥ Having said that, it won't be incongruous to mention that for a real Giani, the Maan or honour of this world is not of much importance. A Giani however, does want honour in the next world because getting honour in the next world means getting a place in Sachkhand. Who wouldn't want the honour of getting to stay at Sachkhand?

3. Another meaning of the word ਮਾਨ in Gurbani is to have reliance on Guru Sahib or to do Maan on Guru Sahib. To do Maan on Guru Sahib is an emotion of love and faith as per this Gurbani Pankiti: ਮਾਨੁ ਕਰਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਊਪਰੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

The confusion arises when we mix different meanings of the word ਮਾਨ. If Guru Sahib permits, a detailed Vichaar on this word will be done at a later date.

Gurbani is Agam Agaadh Bodh. Bhul Chuk dee Maafi jee.

Veerji,

Others are kind of easy. Lets concentrate on the "ਪਤਿ, ਇਜ਼ਤ, ਸ਼ਰਮ" #2. As you mentioned ""it won't be incongruous to mention that for a real Giani, the Maan or honour of this world is not of much importance", So does that mean one should bow for everything that comes on the way ?

I think what it means is that if a Giani is not honoured at a certain venue or place, he should not give it much importance because the honour and insult of this world are false. True honour is gained in the next world and true insult too is suffered in the Dargah.

This should not be interpreted as inviting or looking to get dishonoured because the honour of a Khalsa is the honour of Guru Sahib Himself. Guru Sahib never made His Singhs cows or goats who like Jains and Buddhists should live a life that lacks self-respect. Where there is injustice, a Singh should not bow. Where there is Haume, a Singh should not bow. To bow before a Hankaari is to feed his Haume even more. This bowing would make the aggressor even more Hankaari. Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee set the example by not bowing before Babar the aggressor. Siri Guru Angad Dev jee did not bow before the sword welding Hamayun.
