I would like to know who really was Gangu Brahmin. Many Sikhs these days he was a "rasoyiaa".i.e., he worked in the Guru's kitchen, he prepared langar. However, this sounds like misinformation to me. This doesnt seem to be correct. what was the role gangu brahmin played prior to meeting the Mata Gujar Kaur ji and Chote Sahizade? Did he seem just seem to be passing by and suddenly he met Mata Gujri and Chote Sahibzade but didnt know who they were and decided to take them to his house and give them shelter, and lateron decided to cheat and report them to the mughals?

How can we eat from the hands of non-Sikhs?

They say he did seva in Gurughar for 22 years before he turned traitor. His real name was Gangadas Kaul or perhaps Gangaram Kaul, please clarify. He was ancestor of Indira Gandhi.

With Langar Maryada in place it does not seem right that Gangu would be the personal cook 'if that's what he was' to Guru Sahib or to the family of Guru Ji.

Mere veer Jaspreet Singh ji - DAAS noon te eh samaj aundi hai

1) Why do we want to explore this (specially with above HUKAM in place) ?

2) Is there a doubt on the Gursikh Rehats that we know of today ? If not, we shouldnt worry abt what Guru Sahib did (he is CHOJI GOVINDA).

3) More we explore these issues, they get into unnecassary debates (thats what i feel) , the Hukam is to - Concentrate on BANi/NAAM.

We shouldnt have such doubts in mind.

Bhul Chuk Maaf !!

I have heard that when Brahmins came to Guru Sahib from Kashmir some stayed back, and Gangu was one of them. In Guru Sahib's home, everyone is given rights to practice their faith and therefore, since Brahmins dont like eating from the hands of non Brahmins, Gangu cooked for them.

Didn't he come with the group of Kashmiri pandits headed by Pandit Kirpa Ram who later became Kirpa Singh and was shaheed at battle of Chamkaur? These were the same pandits who came to seek shelter from Sahib Siri Guru Tegh Bahadur Jee Maharaj.

About Gangu Brahman, not much is knows from history. Here are some thoughts that come to mind with respect to this subject:

1. First of all, Gangu Brahman was not an exclusive Rasaoiya of Guru Sahib since Guru Sahib did not have a private Rasoyee. Guru Sahib used to eat from regular Guru ka Langar, where there must have been many Sewadaars other than Gangu.

2. Gangu is said to have come from Kashmir and settled in Siri Anandpur Sahib. If he was working as a Sewadaar in Guru ka Langar, surely he would have become a Sikh. Since he may have become a Sikh during the early time of Siri Guru Gobind Singh jee's Guruship, his name did not change to include "Singh". This Maryada was started in 1699.

3. Principal Satbir Singh has stated that he was called "Gangu Rasoiya" because he had a bad temper and was alway irritated. Rasoyee (kitchen) is always hot when food is cooked. Since Gangu was always in bad mood, some started calling him Gangu Rasoee i.e. Gangu the kitchen. From this some historians misinterpreted that he was a Rasoiya.

4. He must have left Siri Anandpur Sahib before 1699, otherwise he too would have taken Amrit. It's possible that he left Siri Anandpur Sahib because of some negative reason and as a disgruntled person. This is why, he took revenge by informing the authorities about younger Sahibzade and Mata Gujri jee.

5. Some people claim that since Gangu was a sewadaar of Langar, and was a Hindu, so the concept of dietary Bibek is an illusion. This thought is baseless. If Gangu was working in the Langar, he must have become a Sikh. The reason why his name was not changed is that prior to 1699, the maryada of changing the name to include "Singh" or "Kaur" had not come into being. In those days whoever had received initiation from Guru Sahib and Naam was considered a Sikh. It is possible that in his early days Gangu was a good person but later was led astray.
