AMRITSAR: To revive the tradition of cooking food in 'sarabloh' (all iron) utensils , the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has decided to replace all the cookwares used for langar with the traditional material.

SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar informed on Tuesday that the Committee had decided to use sarabloh utensils for langar.

Badungar further informed that he had constituted a three-member sub committee comprising of SGPC's junior vice president Baba Buta Singh, Charanjit Singh Kalewala and Paramjit Kaur Landra, members SGPC whereas secretary, Avtar Singh would be the coordinator for the sub committee to purchase the sarabloh cookwares.

Talking to TOI, Buta Singh informed that the Sarabloh utensils had immense significance for Sikhs. He said there were a few families in Gharauan village near Kharar that had still kept the tradition of keeping sarabloh utensils alive.

He said they would replace all the big utensils having capacity from 3 to 4 ton for cooking of Langar at Sri Guru Ramdas Langar and would replace in other Gurdwara's also in a phased manner.

Presently langar was cooked in iron and aluminum utensils. Sarabloh was a raw iron which was melted in furnace and beaten by hands to form utensil, added he.

He informed that during one of his soujourn at vilalge Gharuan , Sikh's seventh master Guru Har Rai Sahib blessed iron smiths of the village for preparing sarabloh utensils and since then a few families had kept the tradition alive.

Sarabloh cookware had immense health benefits since they were as good as non stick utensils but without any chemical coating and didn't release any toxic fumes he informed.

Despite being naturally non-stick, the sarabloh utensils evenly distribute the heat and can be used for both frying and baking as well. The sarabloh utensils are eco-friendly and lasts long and dodn't require much repair. The only care sarabloh utensils require is to dry them after washing since they can rust.

Presently sarabloh kara (iron bangles) are in demand from Sikhs who believe in using only sarabloh material for wearing kara.
