Baba Gurbakhsh Singh Jee's reputation/the way he is perceived to be...

Posted by DSGj
1. I just wanted to start a discussion on Baba Gurbakhsh Singh Jee (Baba Banda Singh Bahadur).
Through reading over the years and also seeing people's comments online, I end up with a feeling that people have negative perception of Baba Gurbakhsh Singh Jee. Was he the good guy or the bad guy people try and make him seem like?

2. Also, did Bahadur Shah betray the Sikhs? People like to make Bahadur Shah seem good, but I get a feeling that he actually betrayed Sikhs.

3. Also, did the Tat-Khalsas betray Baba Gurbakhsh Singh Jee? It seems like Tat-Khalsas have deep-down hatred for Baba Gurbakhsh Singh Jee.

4. We all have heard about how Tat-Khalsas made Bandai Khalsas eat meat, what are the original sources of this story?

I feel as if many people have genuinely mistakenly went against Baba Gurbakhsh Singh Jee, but at the same time I feel there are many anti-Sikh writers/people out there who spread negative anti-Banda Bahadur stories in order to stain Sikh history.

What is the truth?

Please, let us keep this an intellectual discussion and pyaar and respect for one another. Please don't turn this into pro/anti-meat debate.

Let me start off the discussion with the following information from Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha Jee:

Also, here is something that 99% of Sikhs don't know:

Baba Gurbaksh Singh Ji was a great Gursikh . From the time he took Amrit to his last breath he lived and breathed Sikhi with his every swas. Many historians have decided to put the blame on the breaking of the Khalsa Raj on Banda Singh Bahadur but this is not true. Firstly , Khalsa Raj was not governed by one man. Khalsa Raj was governed by Panj Pyaarey and he was the Jathedar of the Panj. Sri GUru Gobind Singh Ji made him Jathedar. Sri GUru Gobind Singh Ji is AntarJami he chose the best candidate and the candidate who would offer his life for the panth . If Banda Singh Bahadur Ji was a bad SIkh then this means SRi GUru Gobind SIngh Ji is not antarjami or a poor decision maker but this is not true. Sri GUru Nanak Dev Ji chose Bhai Lehna to govern the affairs of the Panth because Sri GUru Nanak Dev Ji is antarjami and he knew who was the most suitable candidate to lead the panth. Likewise Antarjami Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji knew Baba Amar Das was the most suitable to lead the panth. IF we follow this logic then Antarjami Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji chose the panj pyaarey to be lead by Banda Singh Bahadur Ji.

I agree with Bhai Sukhdeep Singh jee- it was baba binod singh who created the issue and his own son took shaheedi with Baba Jee rather than running away with his own father - that says it all.

If Guru Sahib Wills, daas will probably write two articles on this subject refuting Sikh and Hindu misconceptions about Baba Ji. For now, here is an old write-up on the subject.

The following is taken from Ibratnama written by Mirza Muhammad. He was employed by Aurangzeb at the court in 1703. His work contains narratives of political events from 1703 to 1719. It is a long text but the following paragraph deserves some attention.

On this day [of their arrival] I went to the Salt Market to witness the event and accompanied them from there to the Imperial Fort. Of the people of the city there were few who did not come to see the humbling of those rebels. Large crowds gathered in every lane and market such as had seldom appeared before. The Muslims were in a happy and festive mood. Yet many of those ill-fated ones [the Sikhs], who had come as prisoners in this condition, insisted on standing fast by their villainy. There was no sign of humility and submission on their faces. Rather most of them riding on the camels’ backs kept singing and reciting melodious verses. If anyone in the lanes and bazaars reminded them of the cruelties they had committed, which brought them to this condition, they gave immediate and manly retorts, and attributed their capture and humiliation to the doings of fate. If anyone told them that they would now be executed, they replied, “Let them kill us! We do not fear death. Had we feared it, how could we have fought so many battles with you? We have fallen in your hands only because of hunger and lack of provisions; otherwise, you would have come to know of our bravery far more than has been witnessed till now.”

The following is an extract from letter of John Surman and Edward Stephenson from Delhi to Robert Hedges, President and Governor of Fort William, Council in Bengal, dated 10 March 1716. John and Edward received the details of Baba Banda Singh from Mughal officials which is why he calls him “Goroo” otherwise there is no proof that Baba Ji claimed such titles for himself. He always remained a devout Sikh.

The great rebel Goroo who has been for these twenty years so troublesome in the Subaship of Lahore is at length taken with all his family and attendance by Abdell Summed Cawn (Khan), the Suba of that province, some days ago they entered the city loaded with fetters, his whole attendance which were left alive being about seven hundred and eight all severally mounted on camels which were sent out of the city for that purpose, besides about two thousand heads stuck upon poles, being those who died by the sword in the battle. He was carried into the presence of the king, and from thence to a close prison, He at present has His life prolonged with most of his mutsuddys in hopes to get an account of his treasure in the several parts of his kingdom and of those that assisted him, when afterwards he will be executed. For the rest there are 100 each day beheaded. It is not a little remarkable with what patience they undergo their fate, and to the last it has not been found that one apostatized from this new formed Religion.

It is clear that Sikhs were bold and strong in their faith even in the face of death. The reason of their capture was that they ran out of supplies and when they were arrested they were “half men half dead” as Muhammad Qasim (in Ibratnama written in 1723) puts it. It is thus clear that capture of Baba Banda Singh and Sikhs was not because he turned his back on Guru Sahib’s words but lack of supplies. Also, imperial forces were too strong for him. Sikhs never gave up their faith which proves that they were indeed absorbed in Naam and love for the true Guru. There are numerous other eye witness accounts which give lot more details about battles and activities of Baba Banda Singh but common misconceptions that he declared himself “Guru” and turned back on Sikhi are no where found in contemporary sources. He was a great gursikh and made a great sacrifice for the true cause. Let’s not belittle his name.

The following quote written in Mirt’at-i-Waridat by Muhammad Shafi in 1734 clearly shows how Muslims viewed Baba Banda Singh an incarnate of Guru Sahib.

They sent letters to the zamindars of the territories of the Punjab and Hindustan, who belonged to his circle of believers, that Guru Gobind, while in the army of the Emperor, had died at the hands of an Afghan, but, according to his will, in a short while, he will, through the transmigration of his soul, wear the robe of honor of sovereignty, reappearing afresh as a living person.

He further goes on to say that "who (Baba Ji) has made himself similar in appearance to him (Guru Gobind Singh)". Thus, it is clear that Baba Ji's appearance was very similar to that of Guru Sahib because he wore the same bana and weapons. Also, he sacked Sarhind and killed all those who stood against Guru Sahib and His family. Muslims thought it was Guru Sahib who came and sought revenge.

Regarding Baba Ji's victory Khafi Khan in Muntakhabu'l Lubab written in 1731 says "Ordinary people of little faith attributed it to magic and sorcery practiced by that sect." This leaves no doubt that sudden success of Baba Ji in a very short period of time could not be comprehended by many people who started to believe that Baba Ji used magic and powers to achieve success. Keep in mind that Sarhind was considered invincible and no foreign invaders dared to attack it. Wazir Khan had all the wealth, modern army and weapons and protection of forts but none could stand against the Sikhs. Hence, people thought no warrior without the use of any magical powers could win over Sarhind.

Baba Ji struck coins in the name of Guru Sahib. Had he gone against Sikhi, he would've struck new coins in his name. No quarrel took place between the Sikhs while he was alive which proves that he remained a Sikh. He preached equality. Contemporary records state that many outcaste people who joined his army were appointed leaders of their respective areas and high caste people stood waiting for their orders. This was a revolutionary change in the community. He abolished zamindari system and gave more rights to farmers. Baba Ji introduced "Fateh Darshan" which is mentioned by only Khafi Khan but when Sikhs refused to accept it, Baba Ji retracted it and never enforced its use. There is no evidence that Baba Ji introduced new practices contrary to Sikhi. He preached Sikhi and brought many into the fold of Gurmat. He converted many Muslims to Sikhi as well. He was a true Sikh and it is unfortunate that Sikhs today without studying the history properly blame him for all sorts of manmat which is an insult to his name, sacrifice and glory. He lived as a Sikh and died as a Sikh. His name shines like a bright star in the history and nothing will ever change this fact.

Baba Banda Singh jee Bahadur was one of the greatest Sikh leader of all times. He avenged the Shaheedis of Sahibzaadas by punishing the aggressors. He won pretty much whole of present day Punjab and Haryana yet he did not have even an iota of lust for ruling. He used to win a territory and hand it over to Khalsa and never assumed the role of a king. He was the first Sikh to issue Khalsa coins and no where on the coin he let his own name be carved but only allowed Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee's and Siri Guru Gobind Singh jee's names on there.

Some naive historians accuse him of disobeying Guru Sahib's Hukam of not getting married. This is such a lame allegation. How could Guru Sahib give him Hukam to not get married, when all Guru Sahibaan were Themselves married? This is totally a baseless allegation.

Some accuse Baba Banda Singh of trying to assume the role of Guru Sahib but this too is a false statement. There is no historical evidence to prove this. Most of these allegations were made by Rattan Singh Bhangu, who had a severe bias for Baba jee. Even modern day historians like Sardar Karam Singh Historian made baseless statements for Baba jee e.g. that he did not take Amrit etc.

Baba Binod Singh and Kahn Singh, in my opinion were wimps and cowards, for deserting the battlefield of Gurdas-Nangal. They sought refuge from the Lahore Darbar which was a shameful thing to do. One of their descendants I believe was Bhalla who wrote some negative statements for Baba jee. The traitors Binod Singh and Kahn Singh had to justify their actions and they did so by making a villain out of Baba Banda Singh jee.

I have full Shardha that Baba jee was a Brahmgyani Gurmukh. Even his most bitter opponents and Nindaks like Sardar Bhangu have written that Baba jee had great Bhagti and all his Vaaks (statements) came out true. The Sikhs in Sirhind were losing the battle against Vazir Khan but as soon as Baba jee himself stepped into the battlefield by shooting arrows, the tide tilted in the favour of Khalsa. Can a normal person stay unmoved if his 4 year old son is cut to pieces in his own lap and then the still-pumping heart is put in his mouth? Well this is exactly what happened with Baba jee but Baba jee stayed absorbed in Naam Abhyaas.

Farukhsiyar the Mughal emperor asked Baba jee what kind of death he wanted. Baba jee being a great Gurmukh said that the emperor should give him such death that he wants for himself. Farukhsiyar did not know whom he was talking to. He ordered that Baba jee's eyes be pulled out and every limb be cut to pieces. This is how Baba jee got Shaheedi and this is how Farukhsiyaar too got killed in the hands of the Sayyad Brothers. He was first starved for 2 months and then his eyes were pulled out. In the end he was hacked to death, after two months.

Save the valiant Sahibzada Baba Ajit Singh jee, Baba Deep Singh jee and Sardar Hari Singh jee Nalwa, no other Sikh had a presence in the battlefield as strong as Baba Banda Singh jee Bahadur. Today we need someone like Baba Banda Singh jee to lead us out of the quagmire we are stuck in.

Binod Singh's son refused to run away and wanted to attain martyrdom along with all Singhs. He was captured and taken to Delhi but as per Saroop Daas Bhalla, his family used their influence and got him released whereas all other 700 Singhs attained martyrdom.

The article about Baba Banda Singh on Sikhiwiki is totally misleading. Baba Banda Singh never became Guru. If he had become Guru, then he could not have attained such glorious Shaheedi. He remained a loyal Sikh of Siri Dasmesh jee till the end. What to talk about him becoming Guru, he did not even become a king. He was above such worldly lusts.

The Bandai Khalsa came into being after his Shaheedi. The Mughal intelligence got this propaganda going about Baba jee so that Sikhs don't pursue the noble ideal of establishing the Khalsa Raj. The Sikhs that opposed Baba Banda Singh, had accepted the supremacy of the Lahore Darbar and used to get a grant from them.

Another allegation on Baba jee is that he surrendered. This is totally false. Baba jee stayed at Gurdas-Nangal till all their supplies had exhausted. They had been hungry for days and in the end all Singhs decided to attack the enemy and attain martyrdom. Countless Singhs attained Shaheedi there and many carts full of severed heads of Singhs were taken to Delhi. Baba jee and 700 Singhs were caught alive. So many other Singhs in history got caught alive. This does not mean that they were traitors or that they surrendered. Baba jee would have been wrong if he and other 700 Singhs had given up Sikhi instead of embracing Shaheedi.

The Mughals tried everything to coerce Sikhs into leaving their religion but none of the Sikhs yielded. A person who becomes Bemukh to Guru Sahib can never attain such glorious Shaheedi. Baba jee was a true Sikh. All the writers who have written about him have been either mislead or were malicious in intent. None of these writings are contemporary writings but were written at least 60 years later. His most fierce slanderers and Nindaks wrote all this stuff about him more than 100 years after his Shaheedi.

Good posts by Bhai Bijla Singh and Bhai Kulbir Singh. I also firmly believe Baba Banda Singh Jee was a True Gurmukh.

To learn more about Baba jee's jeevani I would recommend Dr. Ganda Singh's book:

Bhai Kaur Singh also mentions how these unprincipled historians are stuck in the worldliness ( trigun) and such historians can never understand or properly explain history. The problem is some of our most celebrated and popular historians did not keep any rehat but we hang on every word they say even when they are doing Ninda of Gurmukh like Banda Singh Bahadur JI.

Bhai Kaur SIngh Ji has mentioned how so many historians especially the modern ones have not adopted rehat and when fabricating history they have not kept Khalsa rehat in mind. For example, some historians says so and so Gursikh took Amrit from Nawab Kapoor , instead of saying so and so Gursikh took Amrit from the Panj Pyaare. Likewise they say Banda Singh Bahadur took over Punjab and destroyed the Zamindari system instead of saying Panj Pyaarey took control over Punjab and ended Zamindari system and issued coins under the Gurus name. No doubts Banda SIngh Bahadur Ji was a great jathedar and Gurmukh but everything which was accomplished was through the Panj Pyaare. Baba Ji was a servant of the Panj . He listened to the directions of the Panj. We need to be careful when associating all the great panthic accomplishment with one individual . Everything happened according to the Panj Pyaarey. Likewise in the future everything will happen when we respect the authority and follow the Panj instead of one single leader.
