Was watching a talk by a Singh on youtube and he mentioned that Scientists previously used to think 100 million species were in existence and now believe there are 5 million, bringing the number much closer to Guru Sahibs figure.

Having performed a quick search myself, the number is even closer. See BBC

Science will no doubt in time prove many other concepts that our Guru Sahibaan knew from the very beginning and staunch Atheists such as Prof Hawkings and Sir David Attenborough if still alive will come to their senses.

5 000 000 or 5 million is nowhere close to
84 00 000. The only reason we write it as 8.4 million, is because the decimal place is moved six places to the left. The actual numerical value is 84 00 000, hence why is it called "chaurasi lakh" in Punjabi.

The Singh mentioned 5 million the article states 8.7 million. Doubtful if all are in existence at one time as some are extinct.

Also found that the Hindu scriptures mention the same number.

This just comes to show that Gurbani should be considered pure truth. Many modern Sikhs like to say Gurbani is metaphorical where it does not correspond with their modern preconceived notions, but this type of thinking is wrong. At least we as Sikhs should try to see Gurbani is truth and try to measure everything from the facts given in Gurbani.
