Benti: Please advise on Saukhasan seva of Guru Sahib at home

Is it ok to do the sukhasan seva of Guru sahib on the same manji sahib as parkash? Or is it must to build a separate place for the Sukhasan. If it is how the sukhasan place should be built if there is no additional space in home except that room?

Daas has been constantly asked by some singhs who say that according to taksal maryada we should not be doing sukhasan seva on same place. Please advise as daas is feeling very confused about this

Sukhasan Seva Can Be Done On The Same Manji Sahib As Where The Parkash Is Done!

I Have Checked With The Panthic Rehit Marayada - And There Is Nothing Written In It Saying That You Are Not Allowed To Do Sukhassan Seva On Manji Sahib And/Or That You Need A Different Astan For Sukhassan!

Yes - It Does Say That You Should Have A Separate Room Altogether If You Want To Have Guru Sahib Jis Parkash At Your Greh (Home)

Personally, I Know Many Gursikhs Which Have The Complete Guru Granth Sahib Within Their Home, And They Do The Parkash & Sukhassan On The Same Manji Sahib. When Changing Rumalleh, Guru Sahib Is On Their Sees (Head) And The Botton Rummaleh Are Placed Then White Kapra (Cloth) Then Satguru Ji Is Placed Back Onto The Throne, Some Put A Kambal Or A Shawl Over Satguru Ji Throughout The Night, Then At Amrit Vela Parkash Then Remove It And Put Normal Rumaleh Accordingly.

We Shouldn't Get Stuck Into Differant Marayadeh, The Panthic Marayada Says Nothing About This And I Personally, Through Experience, Think There Is No Issue With Doing Pakash & Sukhassan Seva On Same Manji Sahib..

The Best Satkar Of Satguru Ji Is, Living By Their Hukam & By Living By There Updesh!

Sukhasan should be done on a separate location from Manji Sahib. Singhs here have a separate Palangh (bed) in the same room, to do Sukhasan of Guru Sahib. This is what Singhs within Jatha do.

Gurmukh Sajan Bh. Kulbir Singh Ji, I Forgot To Mention That, You Can Have Place In The Same Room To Do Sukhassan. Like If You Have Guru Jis Parkash On Manji Sahib In The Same Room On The Side You Have Like A High Top Suitable Table/Cot Type Of Astaan For Sukhassan, What I Was Trying I Say Above Is that You Don't Need To Have A Totally Separate Room For Sukhassa & That If The Room In Short Of Space Then I Thought Sukhassan Could Be Done On The Same Manji Sahib, I Have Seen Many People Do That?



As You Can See This Table Type Thing, We Have Put A Thick Sponge/Gadhi Covered With White Rumalleh With A Small White Chandoa Over The Top, This Is Quite A Good Sukhassan Astan From The Manji Sahib. Its A Very Handy Thing To Use. When We Place Guru Sahib On Sukhassan Astaan We Cover Them With A Small Kambal & This Astaan Has Space For 2 Saroops Of Satguru Ji.

Amanjot Singh Veer Ji that cabinet is totally unacceptable for Sri Guru Ji MahaRaj. Gurmat Maryada requires bed for Sukhasan. Refer to Bhai Sahib Randhir SIngh Jis book Gurmat Parkaash ( end chapter) . Bhai Sahib has mentioned if one does not have an extra room for Sukhasan then they can use the same room as the Darbar Sahib, but using Sri Guru Jis manji ( takht) as a bed is not a traditional practice. The panthic maryada which states its ok is most likely referring to rare situations were one has no other option to do sukhasan according to tradition. All Gurdwaras run by the SGPC follow panthic maryada and not one of the Gurdwara Sahibs do Sukhasan on Maha Raj Jis manji.

I agree with Sukhdeep Singh jee. If there is a severe shortage of space and one can't afford anything else, then it's one thing but for the most part, for Prakash one must have Takhat Sahib and Manji Sahib and for Sukhasan, a Palangh should be made available.

What should be the recommended size (length and height) of Palangh for Sukhasan Sahib ?

Daas initialy started with 3 ft Palangh for Sukhasan sahib. Now, planning to move to 5 ft palangh (not ready yet, but working on it). Bigger than that would be very hard to adjust in our home. But would still like to know sangat's opinion if 5 ft palangh is ok. Plan is also to have larivaar senchian placed alongside maharaj's larivaar saroop.

Veer Ji , I dont know if there is a required size for Sri GUru Jis palangh.

Generally the requirements for the palangh are:

1) Clean White blanket on the floor of the palangh.
2) Clean white blanket on top of Palangh
3) Channan on top of Palangh
4) pleasant aroma( smell) in room of Palangh
5) Kanbal and chadars should be cleaned when needed

These are the only requirements I cant think of rite now. Again Im not sure if there is a required size. I have lost my copy of SGPC maryada perhaps somebody can post SGPC requirements on this post?

CHAPTER IV

Joining the congregation for understanding of and reflecting on Gurbani

Article V

One is more easily and deeply affected by Gurbani (the holy Bani bequeathed by the Gurus) participating in congregational gatherings. For this reason, it is necessary for a Sikh that he visits the places where the Sikhs congregate for worship and prayer (the Gurdwaras), and joining the congregation, partake of the benefits that the study of the holy scriptures bestows.

The Guru Granth Sahib should be ceremonially opened in the Gurdwara every day without fail. Except for special exigencies, when there is need to keep the Guru Granth Sahib open during the night, The Holy Book should not be kept open during the night. It should, generally, be closed ceremonially after the conclusion of the Rehras (evening scriptural recitation). The Holy Book should remain open so long as a granthi or attendant can remain in attendance, persons seeking darshan (seeking a view of or making obeisance to it) keep coming, or there is no risk of commission of irreverence towards it. Thereafter, it is advisable to close it ceremonially to avoid any disrespect to it.

The Guru Granth Sahib should be opened, read and closed ceremonially with reverence. The place where it is installed should be absolutely clean. An awning should be erected above. The Guru Granth Sahib should be placed on a cot measuring up to its size and overlaid with absolutely clean mattress and sheets. For proper installation and opening of the Guru Granth Sahib , there should be cushions/pillows appropriate kind etc. and, for covering it, romalas (sheet covers of appropriate size). When the Guru Granth Sahib is not being read, it should remain covered with a romala. A whisk too, should be there.

Anything except the afore-mentioned reverential ceremonies, for instance, such practices as the arti (Waving of a platter with burning lamps and incense set in it in vertical circular motion) with burning incense and lamps, offerings of eatables to Guru Granth Sahib , burning of lights, beating of gongs, etc., is contrary to gurmat (the Guru's way). However, for the perfuming of the place, the use of flowers, incense and scent is not barred. For light inside the room, oil or butter-oil lamps, candles, electric lamps, kerosene oil lamps, etc., may he lighted.

No book should he installed like and at par with the Guru Granth Sahib . Worship of any idol or any ritual or activity should not be allowed to be conducted inside the Gurdwara. Nor should the festival of any other faith be allowed to be celebrated inside the Gurdwara. However, it will not be improper to use any occasion or gathering for the propagation of the gurmat (The Guru's way).

Pressing the legs of the cot on which the Guru Granth Sahib is installed, rubbing nose against walls and on platforms, held sacred, or massaging these, placing water below the Guru Granth Sahib's seat, making or installing statues, or idols inside the Gurdwaras, bowing before the picture of the Sikh Gurus or elders - all these are irreligious self-willed egotism, contrary to gurmat (the Guru's way).

When the Guru Granth Sahib has to be taken from one place to another, the Ardas should be performed. He/she who carries the Guru Granth Sahib on his/her head should walk barefoot; but when the wearing of shoes is a necessity, no superstitions need be entertained.

The Guru Granth Sahib should be ceremonially opened after performing the Ardas. After the ceremonial opening, a hymn should be read from the Guru Granth Sahib.

Whenever the Guru Granth Sahib is brought, irrespective of whether or not another copy of the Guru Granth Sahib had already been installed at the concerned place, every Sikh should stand up to show respect.

While going into the Gurdwara, one should take off the shoes and clean oneself up. If the feet are dirty or soiled, they should be washed with water.
One should circumambulate with the Guru Granth Sahib or the Gurdwara on one's right.

No person, no matter which country, religion or caste he/she belongs to, is debarred from entering the Gurdwara for darshan (seeing the holy shrine). However, he/she should not have on his/her person anything, such as tobacco or other intoxicants, which are tabooed by the Sikh religion.
The first thing a Sikh should do on entering the Gurdwara is to do obeisance before the Guru Granth Sahib. He/she should, thereafter, have a glimpse of the congregation and bid in a low, quiet voice, "Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh."

In the congregation, there should be no differentiation or discrimination between Sikh and non-Sikh, persons traditionally regarded as touchable and untouchable, the so-called high and low caste persons, the high and the low.

Sitting on a cushion, a distinctive seat, a chair, a stool, a cot, etc. or in any distinctive position in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib or within the congregation is contrary to Gurmat(Guru's way).

No Sikh should sit bare-headed in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib or in the congregation. For Sikh women joining the congregation with their persons uncomfortably draped and with veils drawn over their faces is contrary to Gurmat (Guru's way).

There are five takhts (lit., thrones, fig., seats of high authority) : namely-
The Holy Akal Takht Sahib, Amritsar,
The Holy Takht Patna Sahib,
The Holy Takht Kesgarh Sahib, Anandpur,
The Holy Takht Hazur Sahib, Nanded,
The Holy Takht Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo.

Only an Amritdhari (baptized) Sikh man or woman, who faithfully observes the discipline ordained for the batptized Sikhs, can enter the hallowed enclosures of the Takhts (Ardas for and on behalf of any Sikh or non-Sikh, except a fallen or punished (tankhahia) Sikh, can be offered at the takhts.

At a high-level site in every Gurdwara should be installed the nishan sahib (Sikh flag). The cloth of the flag should be either of xanthic or of greyish blue colour and on top of the flag post, there should either be a spearhead or a Khanda (a straight dagger with convex side edges leading to slanting top edges ending in a vertex).

There should be a drum (nagara) in the Gurdwara for beating on appropriate occasions.

The true Sikhs of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee believe SGGS to be the true saroop of the ten Gurus, and have complete and absolute respect for SGGS. SGGS is the King of Kings and believing that is the life and religion of the True Guru’s Sikhs.

1) With your mind, words and actions believe Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee to be your true saviour. Following the Hukam of Sri Dasmesh Jee do not believe in any other physical guru or believe that any other Guru can save and redeem you.

2) Whenever there is any program or Smagam and Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee is Parkaashed, it should be done at a high and clean place.

3) The Rumalle that are used should be simple and clean. There is no need to use colourful and silken Rumalle. It is Maha Manmat to put pictures in front of and on the Rumalle.

4) There should be at least 5 Rumalle.

5) Sukhasan should be done on a nice bed. There should be sheets on the floor and on top there should be a Chananee.

6) It is not appropriate to do Sukhasan in a closet or cupboard and it is a sign of ignorance of Sikhi Asools. If any poor Sikhs do not have a second room or space for a nice bed to do Sukhasan on, they can according to their financial situation and to the best of their ability, but with perfect and absolute respect do Sukhasan in an open closet, but that open closet should very clean and be decorated with simple Rumalle and cloths.

7) It is very important for the Sukhasan room or place to smell good using Thoof.

Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee is the form of the Gurus and is above and beyond hunger, pain and the feeling of cold or hot. So for this reason to change the Rumalle and do Bhog of food according to different seasons is total Manmat.

9) It is Manmat to put pictures of the Gurus anywhere near where Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee is Parkashed. In the room or on the Rumalle.

10) In the room where Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee is Parkash that room should be completely cleaned and properly prepared, this is very important. When Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee is Parkash it is very important to do Chaur Sahib. It is important Keep doing Chaur until a Paati Singh reads from the Saroop and/or takes a Hukamnama.

11) When someone sits on the Tabia do Paat or take a Hukam it is important that they do Panj Ishnaan before sitting down. This is a sign of complete and utmost respect. Those that quickly sit on Tabia without doing Panj Ishnaan can not be called true and caring Sikhs. To sit on Tabia without washing your feet, the same feet that have been in shoes is not appropriate. This is a very heavy disrespect of Guru Sahib. To wear a dirty Pajamee and sit on Tabia is a horrible offence as well. A Singh should take off his Pajamee before sitting on Tabia. Those that don’t take off their Pajaamees are scared because either they are not wearing proper Kachherai or they aren't wearing Kachherai at all and are wearing something else. So for this reason out of fear they do not take off their Pajamee.

12) For Bibian the Hukam is before sitting on Tabia they should put on a new and completely washed and clean Pajamee or Salwar. Do not wear those Pajameea that have been worn and are smelly. They should also wash their feet. Any Salwar or Pajamee that has touched a shoe should not be worn when sitting on Tabia.

We have seen that at Sri Amritsar Darbar Sahib the Sevadaars do not take off their Pajameea when sitting on Tabia. But the fact is that they have special Pajameea that they only wear when they do Seva. After they are done their Seva they take off those Pajameea and wear different ones. In this way only clean and new Pajameea are worn when they do Seva. That Sevadaar that does not wear clean Bana when sitting on Tabia is a Daindaar to Guru Sahib. Those that wear dirty clothes when sitting on Tabia their Bhagtee will never completely come to fruit.

We have seen some Naam-Dhareek Sikhs that wear smelly clothes and have smelly feet that have been in shoes and without any fear sit on Tabia and do Paat from Sri Guru Granth Sahib. From their feet there is a strong repulsive stench that comes from the leather boots that they wear, but still with such smelly clothes and feet they sit on Tabia and do not care. Yet they claim and call themselves to be complete and perfect Gursikhs of the Guru. These people say with complete faith that without doing Darshan of Guru Sahib we do not eat or drink or start any task. We are Kurbaan and sacrifice ourselves to this commitment of theirs but alas if only they kept the Rehat that we have described above.

Be good to see simple rumalley but the fact is that almost all guru ghars allow the most expensive kadai wale rumalley to be used. Families paying for these may be doing this out of sharda as they want the best for Guru Sahib, but what can we give Guru Ji? They are dada data ek hai, sabh ko devanhaar.

In terms of sitting at tabia to do paath, I thought one has to have full ishnaan, especially after jungle paani and that panj ishnaan is acceptable if one has only emptied bladder. In either case clean clothes are to be worn. Please advise?

One of the other points is that one should not touch their feet when at the tabiaa. I have seen some doing raol and touching their feet.
