Rahao literally means "pause" and guru sahib is saying to pause at this pankiti because it is the most important out of the entire shabad. The rahao line contains the central message/idea of the shabad, the rest of the shabad explains or expands upon this line.

It is interesting to note that the actual word is ਰਹਾਉ and this should be pronounced as
RAHAU-u not as RAHAO
The last letter of the word ਰਹਾਉ is U with matra of Aukad .

Since most of the messages in Gurbanee are in first person. So this words gives the meaning of
PAUSE means I Pause..

The Rahaa-u waali tukh is always the ONE before Rahaa-u and is separately denoted
with Numerical Number one.

If there are more that one Tukh of Rahaa-u in any Sabad then the other one is always
written as Rahaa-u Dujaa.

Indeed Bagga jee is correct - rahhau is correct - also not just pause - i would say it means that the whole of the shabad reflects upon the line before the rahaau - we're not only to pause - but also reflect with vichaar. You will find raag kirtan acutally start singing a shabad with the lines before rahhau - sad truth is it's a dieing tradition - as 99% just sing from the beginning of the shabad .

You are right Veer ji,

I may bring one more important observation for your considerations and it can be observed that there

are several sabad without tukh of Rahaa-u.

and there are some sabad where every tukh is a tukh of Rahaa-u

This I think are just exceptions to the general isignificance of tukh of Rahaa-u or may be

some other reason.
