question on sidha gurmukhi dastar

Posted by Gupt1
For those that tie a sidha gurmukh dastar,

What width is is your dastar material? i.e. do you half the width of the pagh like many do for keski?

The width is normal width that arrives from factory and it is not cut in middle to reduce width. The minimum length is 5 yards.

dhanvaad bhai Kulbir Singh ji

TSingh - I believe that dastar cannot be folded and no pooni.

Do you mean folded as in the style worn by many Kenyan Sikhs is not allowed? ie like the one that Pooran Ji wore? I think its fine as long as the lar is not held in the mouth and no pins are inserted.

daas has 1 more question, is it ok to half the width of the keski? - will it still count as a keski?

If you half your Keski then you should double the length. Normal full width Keski should be 2.5 to 3.0 yards. Half width Keski should be double that length. So decided the Toronto Singhs many years ago.

Does the same apply to dastaaran? The normal length of a dastaar is supposed to be at least 5 yards, but if it is cut down the middle should it be 10 yards?

Bhainjee,

You should tie a minimum 10 meter dastaar for top layer of Dumalla. (If cut in half)

Keskee should be 5 meters or more.

Please let us know about the Material Quality as well. In Punjab we get Full Vail, Half Vail and Rubiyaa Material for Pagdi. Is one of these 3 material suppose to be used here for Dumalla as well ???

Full Vail is thinnest of the 3.
Half Vail is little thicker than Full Vail and thinner than Rubiyaa.
Rubiyaa is thickest of all 3.

Keskee: 3 yards
Dastaar: 5 yards
(as already stated by Bhai Kulbir Singh Jee)

1 yard is about 0.925 meters.
In case of half cloth (torn in the middle), simply double the length.

Material quality does not really matter. Whatever is most comfortable, should be the best choice.
By the way, there is something thinner than Full voil, it is mal-mal (or F-64).
And then there is something thicker than Rubia voil also, it is Khaddar.
But, again the basic length requirements remain the same.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Karandeepjio,
If you google, "how to tie a female dastaar," (there will be 2 excellent dastaar tying videos, one posted by Gurmatbibekis, which can be applied to either gender).
Bhul chuk muaf.

Material type matters to a certain degree.

soft and thin materials are very harsh on the ears in terms of rashes and cuts where thick materials provide comfort.

thick materials also ensure a sturdy dastaar, where the soft materials cannot assure us the same sturdiness.

Sure materials like mal mal and f chohatar might be easier to shape and turn out clean, but with a practiced hand, the same can be accomplished with Rubia and Vail, while ensuring comfort and sturdiness.

Khadar is an awesome material too, but khadar works best for gurmukhee dastaars, not so much for dumallay, Khadar is the best to use for extra sensitive skin, and for those who tie their dastaar without doing kesh haray (drying)

Lengths vary from person to person, no length is particular enough for everybody, but the minimum lenght requirements should be met, as rehitvaan singhs tell us.

There seems to be an abundance of dumalla videos on youtube. but none from what i know on gurmukhee dastaar.

If guroo sahib allows, daas MIGHT* try and put one up.
