Why do you believe in God?

If someone asked you "Why do you believe in God?", how would you respond?
I have been asked this question numerous times, and I never know where to begin.

We dont believe in an existence of God, we know God exist! Why? Because Guru Ji says so .

We forget God millions of times, but he never forgets us for even one second. This is how loving our father- God is. He always cherishes his children. How can we not believe in such a loving and compassionate father who always has the best interest for his creation ? Everyday animals, birds, insects, humans are provided for. Who else is doing the providing? Without the praisal of God man is incomplete he is missing limbs. Why because the creator is always in his creation. If we forget this we will always remain incomplete and empty inside.

People suffer because they forget God, still this punishment of suffering comes through the Love of God so that these people will remember God again. Because through suffering people call on God. Such suffering is really a gift of medicine from God. Dukh Daroo Sukh Rog Bhaeeaa.. How loving is GOd! How beautiful is WaaheGuru Sahib Jeeo!

in the same context by asking "why they don't believe in God"? - respond accrodingly to how deeply they respond . The ones asking this type of question will either get you and get you straight away or never get it at all in their life. So is the play of maharaaj.

Funny story about how God provides food for all

Sodhi Harbhajan Singh wrote a book called “Bhajan Bandagi da Pratap”. In this book he has narrated a very interesting and funny story of an atheist who used to challenge the existence of God. Gurbani says that Vaheguru ensures that everyone gets food or Rozee but this person used to say that there is no God and if a person does not work for food, food won’t come to him.

At one point this atheist person must have had a debate with a Gursikh who believed that Vaheguru provides food no matter where one is. Gurbani clearly says:

Guru Sahib is saying, do not worry, all the worry (to run the world) is with Vaheguru. He creates creatures in water, and provides food to them too. There are no shops in water and no one does farming there. No one buys or sells merchandise there. Over there, creatures are the food of other creatures. He creates creatures in oceans, and provides food to them too. So don’t worry, all the worry is with Vaheguru.

This atheist wanted to prove Gurbani wrong and decided to prove that there is no God. He said that God would not put food in his mouth. He decided to hide in such place where Vaheguru would not be able to provide him food. He thought of many places but settled to go deep in forest and hide over there. He went deep into forest and sat there under a tree. Then he thought that if a traveler saw him sitting here, he could offer him food. Thinking this he climbed a tree, and sat on top of a branch. Now he was very satisfied, thinking that there is no way God could provide him food here because no traveler could spot him sitting on the tree.

After a little while, some thieves came and decided to sit under that tree. They thought that before travelling further, why not eat some food. They opened their lunch boxes and were about to eat their food when they heard some people coming their way. The thieves thought they were being followed by the villagers from whom they had stolen money. They left the food there and fled. The villagers too went after them and did not notice the food under the tree.

Now the atheist was very upset because God had indeed provided food to him, even at such a remote place. He still stayed adamant and thought that if God is there, then he must put this food in his mouth. He was happy after deciding this because he thought that there was no way, God could put this food in his mouth. He thought he was going to win and prove that there is no God.

As he was thinking along these lines, he noticed some more people coming his way. Actually these people who were coming towards him were thieves too. They came under the tree and saw food there. They were very surprised to see food there. They thought that there must be someone hiding around there. They looked around and saw the atheist sitting on a branch of the tree. They told him to come down but he refused. Now the thieves thought that this person had added poison to the food hoping that whoever eats it would die and he would steal his or her possessions. The thieves got very upset. One of them climbed up the tree and started beating up the atheist.

The atheist was pulled down and badly beaten by the thieves. Then they forced him to eat food but he refused to eat it. He did not want God to win. At this they forced open his mouth and put food in his mouth. When food had been forced into the atheist, he cried out loud, “There is a God; there is a God who feeds even the ungrateful like me.”

The moral of the story is that God is there, he provides food to everyone and we should never mess with him.

I don't believe God exists, I FEEL God exists. I can't explain it to someone who has never had that feeling, just like a hearing person can't explain to a deaf person what it's like to hear music.

I used to be an atheist, and to be honest, on an intellectual level, atheists tend to have better arguments than those who do believe in God. As an atheist, I wouldn't have started believing in God, no matter what someone had told me. I had to experience God to know that He is.

I can never explain to people why I believe in God, because I don't think I really believe in him. In a way, whenever I get disconnected from Vaaheguroo (most of the time), I become atheist again. If I can't feel his love and presence with me here and now, how can I say that I believe in God?

A person who argues about this issue is a pure saatak and is considered to be a moorakh in BANI, in asadiwaar it says "Moorkhai Naal Na Lujiai'" meaning not to argue with a moorakh. But, i also think it is the duty of a khalsa to explain their knowledge to a atheist who doesn't understand. If the manmukh is still not listening to the gurmukh "khalsa" then the gursikh should not try to argue further more. After that say "Why do not believe in god My friend"!
Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh!

haha that was a funny story by bhai harbhajan singh it reminds me of a story by bhai vir singh in the book "baba naudh singh". one day a diseased gursikh went to see a doctar in the hopes of finding a remedy for his sickness. unfortunately, the doctar was a nastic and did not have faith in the powers above. whe diagnosing th diseased gursikh he said " there is no cure for this disease. you are going to die". a couple weeks passed and the gursikh went to revisit the manukh doctar. the doctar was sitting with other doctars , the gursikh told one of the doctars how he has been miraculously been cured by the words of a gurmukh. the manukh doctar said "thats impossible the disease has no cure. when his colleagues examined the gursikh they noticed the disease was gone. the cynic became speechless, and demanded to see the gurmukh. the gumukh came and in a sarcastic and arrogant voice the manmukh said " hey sant what medicine have you used?" the humble gurmukh said: dr.sahib, i just did ardas and recited th gurus mantar, i have done nothing guru ji has healed this man through his holy words. using his scientifintic reasoning the cynic said man cant be healed by mere words. you are a liar! the gurmukh said " fool! be fearful of gods abilitly" the proud doctar could not stand being called fool. he became angry, his face became red and his body started to shake. the humble gurmukh then said "look at this mans veins, his blood has ascended by my use of the word fool. i did not mean to use harsh words. i was only trying to prove negative words have an impact on the body as much as positive words" the doctars then understood their limited intelligence.

I believe in God because Guru Sahib speaks to me (and anyone who goes to Guru Sahib's sharan with an open heart). Whereas in other religions devotees have to rely on symbols (i.e. things in nature) to reaffirm their faith, we have Guru Sahib, the actual roop of Akaal Purakh, who literally responds to us, through hukamnamey, ras and vismaad of gurbani, and the feeling of His presence in Naam.

I have not seen Switzerland this does not mean that Switzerland does not exist. There are people who have visited Switzerland and I get into trance when those people describe their scenic beautiful experience of visiting Switzerland.

For getting to Switzerland One needs Passport / Visa / Air-Tickets unitl then One cannot reach Switzerland.

Now replace :
1. "Switzerland" with "Sachkhand / Waheguru"
2. "Passport / Visa / Air-Tickets" with "Gurmat / Naam / Simran / Rehit / Sarblohi-Bibeki-Jeevan"

Hope you got where is Gursikh's Switzerland and make sure you don't land up in Zurich cool smiley

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa,
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

Thank you for the replies. I now have a better idea as to how such questions should be addressed..and maybe in some instances, it's best to just not engage in debate.

My response to an atheist...

poochhte hain aaj woh hum se, bataao Khuda hai bhi ya nahi
Khuda ka poochhne waale, bataa de kahi tu hee Khuda toh nahi?
imtihaan tumhaare bade rangeele, par shikkva humein koi nahi
tum saamne aake sawaal poochh gaye, aur humein khabar bhi nahi!

The flaw lies in limiting god to one's perceptions in terms of its shape, size, vastness. Nobody- atheists, scientists, theists, even animals- fail to shower praises on nature, the vast universe, flora & fauna. Although baani seems to tell this to the commoner, realizing it within is called for.

Further even while imagining the way Guru Sahib looks, one is bogged down by the same bharam. Maharaj is shabad and the ten are but one. How he would have looked in physical form is but inconsequential. What a bharam.

But for Gurbani, in this world, I feel active minds are likely to fall in Atheism. There is so much irreligious in most religions that people feel honest to be an Atheist.
