Gurbani Viyakaran: Nouns ending with Siharee
Sihari ending NounsSometimes a noun will end with a Sihari, there are several reasons for this.
Rule 1) ਸਬੰਧਕੀ ਪਦ (preposition word)
The first possible reason that there will be a sihari on a noun is if it is a ਸਬੰਧਕੀ ਪਦ (preposition). For example, the following words appear in Gurbani in two different formats.
ਵਿਚ, ਅੰਦਰ
This is how you would spell these words in basic Punjabi, but in Gurbani these words also appear as follows.
ਵਿਚਿ, ਅੰਦਰਿ
When there is a sihari added to the word, one possible reason is that is a ਸਬੰਧਕੀ ਪਦ (preposition word)
Here are examples of the above mentioned words in their normal form, and then with sihari’s added to them
Normal Format
ਵਿਚੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਕਰਿ ਸਕੈ ਕਿਸ ਥੈ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਰੋਜ
ਵਿਚੁ =ਵਿਚੋਲਾ ਪਨ (middle-man) (noun)
With Siharee added
ਨਵਾ ਖੰਡਾ
ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਨਾਲਿ ਚਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
ਵਿਚਿ =ਅੰਦਰ (in) (preposition)
ਨਵਾ ਖੰਡਾ ਵਿਚਿ=ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ।
Normal format
ਅੰਦਰੁ ਲਗਾ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ
ਅੰਦਰੁ =(hirda) (noun)
With Siharee added
ਹੁਕਮੈ
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਹੁਕਮ ਨ ਕੋਇ
ਅੰਦਰਿ= (vich) (in) (preposition)
Other examplesਜਲ ਥਲ ਮਹੀਅਲ vs ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ
Without the siharees, these words would mean just water, land, and sky
When siharee is added, the meaning would change to IN the water,IN the land, and IN the sky
First, lets look at the meanings of these words without the siharee...
ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਵਨਾ ਭਇਆ ਪਵਨੈ ਤੇ
ਜਲੁ ਹੋਇ
From the true lord, the air was made, and from the air came water
ਸਰ ਭਰਿ
ਥਲ ਹਰੀਆਵਲੇ ਇਕ ਬੂੰਦ ਨ ਪਵਈ ਕੇਹ
The pools are filled, and the lands have become green
ਜਲ ਥਲ ਮਹੀਅਲ ਸਭਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਣੇ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਨ ਪਖਾਲੀ ਜੀੳ
The beings OF the water, earth, and sky are all satifised
Thus, in the context these words are used, the words mean Water (in the first example) land (in the second example) and water, air, sky (in the third example) and nothing more.
But when a siharee is added the meaning changes. Now let’s look at these words with the siharee added
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ
ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਸੋਇ
Here ਜਲਿ, ਥਲਿ, and ਮਹੀਅਲਿ all have sihare’s, the meaning of these words would change to In the water(ਜਲਿ), IN the land (ਥਲਿ), IN the sky (ਮਹੀਅਲਿ)
Thus this line would mean...I am a sacrifice to that lord, who resides IN the water, IN the land, and IN the sky
In simple turns, if a noun appears without a siharee, it will always have the meaning of a noun and nothing more. When there is a siharee added to the noun, one of the possibilities is that it turns into a ਸਬੰਧਕੀ ਪਦ (preposition word).
Note: If one is not familiar with basic rules of Grammar (i.e what a preposition, noun, verb etc is), it is suggested to take some time to learn these over again.
