A Painting by August Theodore Schoefft

Posted by harinder_singh

Maharaja Ranjit Singh listening to the two sacred Granths being recited near Sri Harimandir Sahib.

(A Painting by August Theodore Schoefft (1809-1888), made in Amritsar. From Princess Bamba Collection)

The above picture shows joint parkash of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and Sri Dasam Granth near Sri Harmander Sahib.

interestingly, this painting shows ranjit singh being shaded with a canopy (umbrella), while guru sahib is left out in the hot sun. shall we count how many violations of maryada are happening in this painting?

there aer a number of violations in this painting:

1 - there is no Chandoa/chanani on Guruji.

2 - could it be that the second granth is actually japji sahib pothi that they used to keep with akhand paath in olden days.

3 - why would ranjit singh not listen to paath in harmander saheb instead?

by the way, i am not against dasam granth parkash when you have to listen to baani from it.

I do not know the modus operandi of making paintings of this type, yet we know it is not true scene as in camera shots. There is considerable role of memory or imagination, in painting such pictures. The artist after visiting the scene carries broad impression with him and paints to recollect his memory.--------------------------Pitfalls are expected in that case. Is it possible?

How come, both Granths are being read simultaneously?

was thinking the exact same thing. We all know this was a puratan maryada. Simultaneous paath of SGGS ji and Sri Dasam Granth doesn't quite seem to be a norm in the panth either.
