Tukaa regarding Jamdoots, Narak, Dharmraaj

ਅਧਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਕੈ ਹੈ ॥ ਸੁ ਭਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਖੁਐ ਹੈ ॥ ਸੁ ਕਾਲ ਫਾਂਸ ਫਸ ਹੈ ॥ ਨਿਦਾਨ ਨਰਕ ਬਸਿ ਹੈ ॥੪੩॥

ਸਾਕਤ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕੰਡਾ ਹੇ ॥
ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਚਲਹਿ ਚੁਭੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਹਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਡੰਡਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

dhharam raae jab laekhaa maagai baakee nikasee bhaaree ||
When the Righteous Judge of Dharma calls for my account, there shall be a very heavy balance against me.

Bhagat Kabeer Ji

dhharam raae jab laekhaa maagai kiaa mukh lai kai jaahigaa ||
When the Righteous Judge of Dharma calls for your account, what face will you show Him then?

kabeer jam kaa t(h)ae(n)agaa buraa hai ouhu nehee sehiaa jaae ||

Kabeer, Death's club is terrible; it cannot be endured.
I have met with the holy man; he has attached me to the hem of his robe. ||78||

Sorat'h, Fifth Mehla:
The Lord is always with me.
The Messenger of Death does not approach me.
God holds me close in His embrace, and protects me.
True are the Teachings of the True Guru. ||1||
The Perfect Guru has done it perfectly.
He has beaten and driven off my enemies, and given me, His slave, the sublime understanding of the neutral mind. ||1||Pause||
God has blessed all places with prosperity.
I have returned again safe and sound.
Nanak has entered God's Sanctuary.
It has eradicated all disease. ||2||24||88||

ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿਆ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥੬॥
Jam pakṛi▫ā ṯab hī pacẖẖuṯānā. ||6||
Caught by the Messenger of Death, they shall regret and repent in the end. ||6||


ਲੇਖਾ ਰਬੁ ਮੰਗੇਸੀਆ ਬੈਠਾ ਕਢਿ ਵਹੀ ॥
Lekẖā rab mangesī▫ā baiṯẖā kadẖ vahī.
Opening His ledger, God will call you to account.

ਤਲਬਾ ਪਉਸਨਿ ਆਕੀਆ ਬਾਕੀ ਜਿਨਾ ਰਹੀ ॥
Ŧalbā pa▫usan ākī▫ā bākī jinā rahī.
Those rebels who have unpaid accounts shall be called out.

ਅਜਰਾਈਲੁ ਫਰੇਸਤਾ ਹੋਸੀ ਆਇ ਤਈ ॥
Ajrā▫īl faresṯā hosī ā▫e ṯa▫ī.
Azraa-eel, the Angel of Death, shall be appointed to punish them

ਪਾਪੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਏ ਹਾਇ ॥
Pāpī karam kamāvḏe karḏe hā▫e hā▫e.
The sinners act, and generate bad karma, and then they weep and wail.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਮਥਨਿ ਮਾਧਾਣੀਆ ਤਿਉ ਮਥੇ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥੯॥
Nānak ji▫o mathan māḏẖāṇī▫ā ṯi▫o mathe ḏẖaram rā▫e. ||9||
O Nanak, just as the churning stick churns the butter, so does the Righteous Judge of Dharma churn them. ||9|

Having an influence of people who saw Jamdoots, Dharamraaj and Chitar Gupt as metaphors I was confused and had doubts on their existence.

I grew up understanding that...
1) Dharamraaj was the conscious - the faculty which constantly judges our actions.
2) Chitar and Gupt is our subconscious which records and stores all our thoughts and actions.
3) Jamdoots are there to explain and persuade people to not commit bad actions and follow Guru's Path.


However, with Guru Jee's kirpaa, when Guru jee made me read Gurbani, I found the answers.

In Bihaagraa Raag, ang 555, Guru Amardaas Jee Maharaaj says:


ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ||
Translation: "Dharam Raae, The Righteous Judge of Dharma, exists and is the creation of Waheguru; he does not approach the humble servant of Waheguru."


Reading the above pangtee (line) cleared my doubts.

One Chardi Kalaa Gursikh was doing vichaar about narak, jamdoot, Dharamraaj etc said perhaps people don't want to believe because they are fearful of reality. But at the end of the day, Gurbani is true and whatever is written in Gurbani, i.e. the descriptions of Dharamraaj and the after life is true. Guru jee says:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਮੁਹਹੁ ਕਢਾਏ ||
"O GurSikhs, know that Bani, the Word of the True Guru, is true, absolutely true. The Creator Lord Himself causes the Guru to chant it."

Bhul chuk maaf.

guramukh jag jeethaa jamakaal maar bidhaar ||

The Gurmukh conquers the world; he knocks down the Messenger of Death, and kills it

guramukh dharageh n aavai haar ||

The Gurmukh does not lose in the Court of the Lord.
