Gurti means the first food given to a baby. Typically, it was made from Gurh (raw brown sugar lump), and hence the name Gurti. Gurti is a secular practice all religions/communities in Punjab call it gurti. In fact the practice is not limited to humans, on the farms even new born calves are given some gurh to encourage them to start suckling. In the year 1510 AD, Taajudin Naqshbandi, a Persian/Arabic writer met Guru Nanak Dev ji during his journey through the Middle East. For the next two years, Taajudin lived with the Guru and kept a detailed eyewitness account in a manuscript titled Siyahto Baba Nanak Fakir.
