ਕੜਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ or ਕੜਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਦ

Posted by Kulbir Singh
In 2004 we went to India and there had an opportunity to meet Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti jee who was the Jathedar of Siri Akal Takhat Sahib, back then. We discussed with him many Panthik issues including Laridaar Saroop, Nitnem of 5 Baanis as opposed to 3 Baanis in the morning etc. While conversing with him, we starting talking about lack of Gurbani Viyakaran in Sikhs today. One prime example that was brought up was that where there are signs of Karah Parshad in Darbar Sahib and other SGPC managed Gurudwara Sahibaan, it is written as ਕੜਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ and this is so much against Gurbani Viyakaran. Giani Vedanti jee who himself is an authority on Gurbani Viyakaran, immediately said something along that lines that he has tried to get this fixed but all in vain.

The word ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ comes in Gurbani numerous times and almost always it means ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜਾਂ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ (through Kirpa). It's a noun in Instrumental case (Karan Karak). On the other hand the word Prashad as it appears with Karaah Parshad means food (not Kirpa). It does come in Gurbani in the meaning of food:

ਜੇ ਓਹੁ ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦ ਕਰਾਵੈ ॥

In the above Pankiti, this word means food and not Kirpa.

When the word Prasaad does not come in the meanings of "ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜਾਂ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ", but means Kirpa or Mehar, then it usually comes with an Aunkad in the end, as is the case in the 6th Salok of Siri Sukhmani Sahib:

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਰੁ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਅਹੰਮੇਵ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੁ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥੧॥

In the light of the above Vichaar, it is suggested that whenever writing "Karah Parshad" in Punjabi it should never be written as ਕੜਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ and should be written as ਕੜਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਦ.

Guru Sahib knows better.

Daas,
