Carrying a Full Size Kirpan during Anand Karaj

Posted by Kulbir Singh
Someone asked the question as to why one should hold full size Kirpan at Anand Karaj time. As per Bhai Kaur Singh and numerous Gursikhs and Rehitnamas, wearing full time Kirpan while going out is part of Rehit. Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee, Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh jee Bhindranwale, Akali Kaur Singh and many other prominent Gurmukhs always carried full sized Siri Sahib (or some other Shaster e.g. Safajung, Teer etc.) when going out. This is where many of us (including Daas) are weak in Rehit. Having said that, even if Kirpan is not carried everywhere, it should at least be adorned at the time of main occasions like Amrit Sinchaar and Anand Sanskaar.

At the time of Anand Sanskaar, one should be in Tyaar-bar-Tyaar form i.e. one should be a Gursikh in good standing (Pure of Bajjar Kurehits, wearing 5 Kakaars, Nitnemi etc.) and should be wearing full Baana including Shasters (which includes full sized Siri Sahib in addition to the Kakaar).

If someone can add to this, it would be great.

Naveen Panth Prakash, Giani Gian Singh mentions some of the Rehat that was given to the Khalsa Singhs.

Take Khandey Di Pahul and all should learn Shastar Bidiya [the science of arms].

Chant Vahiguru Ki Fateh [The victory is the Lords], and adorn yourself with weapons and clothes.

ਸਿਖ੍ਯਾ ਜੰਗ ਕਰਨ ਕੀ ਦੱਈਏ । ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਮ ਇਨਿ ਕੇ ਰਖਵੱਈਏ ।
Give the teachings of how to wage war, in this way you shall retain the name Singh.

ਗਾਥ ਬੀਰ ਰਸ ਸੀ ਸੁਨਵੱਈਏ ।
Listen to the stories which inspire 'Bir Ras' [warrior spirit].

i'd submit that the singhnee should also carry a full sized kirpaan at anand karaj, as guru sahib never distinguished between men and women regarding rehet.

He who never abandons his weapon (Kirpaan). Recognise them as the disciplined and pure Khalsa.

Rehatnama Bhai Desa Singh

Ive read somewhere that in Guru Gobind Singh Ji's hukams that you shouldnt give your daughter to a clean shaven person and one who does not have weapons.

What I have deduced from history that before 1950's you had to be amritdari to have anand karaj so the singhs would carry 3' Kirpan (maybe bibia to havent seen any photo evidence but doesnt mean they didnt carry them), then they relaxed the rehat so you can get married but you promise to the sangat that you will take amrit soon after you are married. The sad story is that how we are now, no one promises anything to Guru Sahib, carrying a kirpan, growing a trimmed beard and wearing a dastar is a ritual as soon as they leave the gurdwara is shave, put kirpan aside, and dastar off to party, drink and eat meat.

In terms of carry shastar is a great rehat but let us also learn the vidya of how to use them otherwise were just sheep in lion's clothing.
