ਬੈਠੇ ਬਥੇਰੇ ਬਾਬੇ ਬਣ ਕੇ, ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਠੇਕੇਦਾਰ ਅਖਵਾਉਂਦੇ।
ਪੱਲੇ ਅਪਣੇ ਕੱਖ ਨਹੀ, ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲਾਉਣ ਚ ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ।
ਜਦ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਲਭ ਪਿਆ ਸੱਚ ਦਾ ਰਾਹ, ਹੋ ਗਏ ਸਚੇ ਦੇ ਦੀਦਾਰ।
ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਪੁਛੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ, ਕਿਉਂ ਬਣਿਆ ਤੂੰ ਸਰਦਾਰ।

ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਕਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਤੇ, ਜੋ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦਾ ਸਾਕ ਠੁਕਰਾ ਦੇਵੇ।
ਸਿਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਚਨ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ, ਤੱਤੀ ਤਵੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਅਪਣਾ ਲਵੇ।
ਜਾਨ ਤੱਕ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ, ਮੈ ਕਿਉਂ ਹੋਵਾਂ ਦੂਜੇ ਮਗਰ ਖੁਆਰ।
ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਪੁਛੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ, ਕਿਉਂ ਬਣਿਆ ਤੂੰ ਸਰਦਾਰ।

ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਬਚਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਆਏ ਸੀ ਭੱਜੇ ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰ ਤੋਂ, ਰੋਂਦੇ ਪਿੱਟਦੇ ਧਾਹਾਂ ਮਾਰਦੇ।
ਬਿਨਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਸ਼ਰਤ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹੋ ਗਏ, ਸਹਿ ਗਏ ਵਾਰ ਮੁਗਲ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਦੇ।
ਅਪਣਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਦਿਤਾ ਬਲਿਦਾਨ, ਕਿਉਂ ਨਾ ਮੰਨੀਏ ਐਸਾ ਦਾਤਾਰ।
ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਪੁਛੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ, ਕਿਉਂ ਬਣਿਆ ਤੂੰ ਸਰਦਾਰ।

ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਪਿਓ, ਫੇਰ ਪੁੱਤ, ਫੇਰ ਮਾਂ ਵੀ ਨਿਛਾਵਰ ਕਰਤੀ
ਖੂਨ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਹਿੰਦ ਦੀ ਲਾਲੋ ਲਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਧਰਤੀ।
ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਲੁਟਾਵਣਵਾਲੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਦੇ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ, ਕਿਉਂ ਜਾਵਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਰ।

ਹੋਰ ਕਿਥੇ ਲਭਣਾ ਐਸਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ, ਜੋ ਉਜੱੜ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸਭ ਦੀ ਭਲਾਈ।

ਬਹੁਤ ਸੌਖਾ ਹੈ ਅੱਜ ਕੱਲ, ਕਹਾਉਣਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੇ ਸੰਤ।
ਅਸਲੀ ਪੁੱਠੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਦੱਬੀ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪੰਥ
ਜਾਗਦੀ ਜੋਤ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮਿਲਣਾ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ ਅੰਧਕਾਰ।
ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਪੁਛੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ, ਕਿਉਂ ਬਣਿਆ ਤੂੰ ਸਰਦਾਰ।

ਜਿਸ ਦਿਨ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸੋਝੀ ਮਿਲ ਗਈ, ਇਸ ਧਰਮ ਤੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੀ।
ਬੋਲਤੀ ਬੰਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਣੀ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ, ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਸਿਦਕ ਦੀ ਨਾਂ ਕਿ ਸਵਾਸ ਦੀ।

I know your background is Hindu and by the kirpa of Guru Sahib you were blessed with Sikhi. How has been your experience after becoming a Sikh? How have your relatives and friends reacted? I know your poem above tells a lot but something in Vaartak would be ideal.

Blood related family and kaljugi friends either never understand, or take ages to understand how and why someone got into Sikhi. I wrote this poem above last year, although that question was put to me many years ago “kyon baneya tu sardar?” I read it to my father on the telephone and he loved it as well, like all my other futile attempts.

Initially the reaction was, as expected, a shock. No parents can bear to see their only son adopt another religion. But they were satisfied that I had become a Sikh and not a Muslim, which is what I would have done when I was 15 years old, as back then I was very much influenced by Islam (Shia Islam to be precise). My parents, family, and friends, over the period of the past few years have been beyond tolerant, accepting, and supportive. I feel blessed to have such parents. In fact, they were also very much premi shardhaalus of Gurujee when they were young. I still have a faint scene in my mind of going to a remote Gurdwara somewhere in Dubai when I was 2 years old. When I was in my late teens and early 20s, dad would drive into the remote deserts of Dubai with me just to look for a Gurdwara. At time he even gives ride to Singhs (whom he doesn’t even know) from the Gurdwara to their camp where the Singhs who work as laborers stay, just so that they don’t have to spend money on a cab. My dad’s family follows a very modern version of Hinduism, and so they were not at all enraged. Mother’s family is somewhat more traditional Brahmin, but now even they are cool with it.

The big advantage I always had was that my daadkey and naankey are Punjabi
Brahmin Hindus. The “Punjabi” factor is common with Sikhs, and so that cut down my supposed troubles a lot. My nana-nani did seva of giving shelter to a Sikh family during November 1984, inspite of the fact that they were threatened that if a single Sikh was seen in their house, it would be burnt down.

Sikhi is like a sugar candy. Give it to someone to taste, and he/she will smile. Even if he/she makes a face after tasting it, well, kinne ku din gusse hon ge? Kisi na kisi din sojhi aa jandia.
