A Great Mystical Miracle from the life of Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh

Posted by Kulbir Singh
Background

In 1913, two teenagers Bhai Harbhajan Singh and Bhai Dalip Singh got qualified to receive amrit from Punj Pyaray. Gurmukhs doing sewa in Punj Pyaray were Singhs like Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee. In those days, seekers of amrit were required to listen to whole of Siri Akhand Paath Sahib. Out of about 150 seekers of amrit, only two fortunate ones – Giani Dalip Singh Phulawal and Giani Harbhajan Singh Chawinda were chosen. As soon as they drank amrit, great kirpa of Guru Sahib was bestowed on them. They reached high levels of Gurmat spiritual states. Their Dasam Duaars were opened and they had Darshan of Vaheguru, there and then.

For few days, they were so much immersed in Naam that they stayed with Singhs and did not go back to their homes. When they reached their respective homes, they faced severe opposition from their families. In those days Singh Sabha was severely opposed in some villages. When their families saw them turned into Khalsa, they were furious. Giani Harbhajan Singh’s village was close to Bhai Sahib’s village and as such Bhai Sahib was able to pacify his family but Giani Dalip Singh’s village Phulawal was about 10 km from Bhai Sahib’s village and his family was very much opposed to the Khalsa rehit of their child.

The family of Giani Dalip Singh got so upset that they decided to forcefully cut his hair and spoil his Sikhi. They imprisoned Bhai Dalip Singh in a room and called a barber to cut his hair. While all this was going on, during the evening time, Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee was sitting in Samadhi meditating on Naam. Bhai Sahib in Samadhi saw the vision of what was going on. Bhai Sahib did not have time to reach there physically so he took his Sooksham Sareer (Astral body) and reached that place where Bhai Dalip Singh was imprisoned and stopped them by using Akali Shakti (mystical powers that Singhs get when they reach high states).

Following is the translation of the above incident, from Bhai Sahib Mahakaav (Great Poetic work) – Jyot Vigaas. Bhai Sahib has very beautifully written the whole incident in his words, in poetic form. The poetry is so beautiful and balanced that one gets amazed by it. Hereon, is the translation of this great work:

***********Translation Begins*************

Two Bhujangis get Spoiled

At the time when the divine food of Naam is being distributed, the attendees of the divine congregation (Sat sangat) cannot get separate from it. They are unable to leave the Sangat of Gursikhs (true society) and they forget all attachments of their homes and families. The teachers of their school were getting upset because they (Giani Dalip Singh and Giani Harbhajan Singh) had forgotten all about attending their school. The teachers were upset because in the past many students had been spoiled (by converting them into Sikhi) by the Singhs. These students had merged their concentrations in the True Naam. (543)

When these two new Gursikhs got their concentrations merged in Naam, they forgot about attending their schools. They forgot about the tasks and duties of worldly people and such worldly tasks and duties seemed futile to them. In the end, with great difficulty, the teachers got them back into schools. (544)

Teachers and elders brought these two Naam-intoxicated, young teenagers back to school but whenever they got chance, they used to reach the sangat of Singhs, just like birds fly to meet their friends. Such was their love for sangat. Hans (a bird) that loves Mansarovar pond loves and likes to be near Mansarovar pond, how can it be satisfied by being on the side of ordinary muddy ponds? Ones whose eyes have seen the visions of high spiritual states, why would they look at low worldly sights; why would they have thirst for worldly things? (545)

These Gursikhs veers, who were the travelers of the high road of Gurmat, did not get off their aim of Vaheguru. Their families who were stuck in the web of attachments, for their worldly selfish reasons got very worried about their Bairaagi (recluse) state of mind. Families got worried that their sons were not any good for them anymore, since they had become Khalsa. (546)

They reach their Homes to face Fierce Reaction of their Families

Families were thinking how they can take control of their sons’. On one side their families were scheming intensely and on the other hand, the love of lovers was manifold. The deer who once jump the fences of their imprisonment, don’t come back but when the Bhujangis were inspired by their good advisors, the wise ones (Giani Dalip Singh and Giani Harbhajan Singh) decided to go back. (547)

They both came to visit their villages as per the Hukam of the Singhs. It is very difficult to obey the Will of the Guru and the Will of Guru is very severe. On their arrival, their families had assembled many people armed with weapons and were bent upon committing cruelties. (548)

Their families who were totally uneducated and foolish, all confronted them. They ordered the Bhujangis to reject Sikhi and remove their Nihung Baana (attire). “You have given bad name to our families by coming home as Nihungs. You have given up the occupation of your ancestors and taken up an ugly occupation (of becoming Singhs). (549)

“You have drowned the good name of our families and dishonoured us. By wearing Blue Baanay (attire) and adopting the ways of spoiled crowd (Singh Sabha), you have burned our chests. You have taken Pahul (Amrit) from the hands of spoiled crowd (Singh Sabha) who don’t discriminate based on caste. You have stained the reputation of our high castes by taking Amrit from Singh Sabha people.” (550)

“The tradition of our ancestors and high-caste families is very high but you have stained it and cut our noses (i.e. dishonoured us). By taking utensils of Sarbloh you have adopted the ways of Faqirs (poor people). You have adorned Chakkar on your Dastaar, started wearing Kirpan and Kachhera; and shed the attire of your ancestors. We will break your utensils of Sarbloh and will dishonour your Shasters (weapons). (551)

“We are going to remove your Kare, Kirpan and Kanghe and destroy your Baana. We will fix you today by removing your long Kesh. We will stop you from keeping Rehit”. This way under the influence of extreme anger, they (their families) said many things against Gurmat. (552)

Chatrik jeeo, this part was kept from printing in Jyot-Vigaas at Bhai Sahib personal request and was subsequently printed as a separate booklet. Originally it was written as part of Jyot-Vigaas but not printed. I think the reason why Bhai Sahib did not allow it to be printed is that it shows families of both Bhujangis in bad light.

It's a wonderful and detailed account of how Gurmukhs of high spiritual states function. It's little known but an amazing Saakhi of faith and Guru Sahib's helping power.

It was not Bhai Sahib's will that he wrote this incident. When he wrote Jyot Vigaas, he continued writing for 7 days and 7 nights. He was divinely inspired by Guru Sahib. There are many great principles of Gurmat in this epic. Since as per Guru's will he wrote about this incident, it must be safe to share it with Gurmukhs. I don't know if Bhai Sahib would approve of it (out of his humility) but honestly believe that Guru Sahib would approve of this because this incident talks about the glory of Gurmat and reading this story can inspire others to adopt more Gurmat.

Guru Sahib knows better.

Below is the Second Part of this ongoing Saakhi written by Bhai Sahib in peotic form:

---------------------Beginning of Translation---------------------

The Gurmukhi Response of Bhujangis

The Bhujangis who had become an embodiment of peace, kept quite because their hearts were filled with divine Peace. Their hearts were filled with divine Love and their concentrations were absorbed in Naam, therefore, they did not utter any sour words. When the divine Lotus Feet (Charan Kamal) had pierced their chests, then where was there room for the thorn of anger to pierce them? Those who are coloured in the divine colours of Naam, don’t bother about barking of barking-people. (553)

Those who are alive on the divine support of Vaheguru, how can they be afraid of worldly storms? Those who have blocked their ears from worldly sounds, by concentrating on the secret tenth door (Dasam Duaar), how can they be bothered by some worldly controversies? They had their minds under their control and they did not hear anything the aggressors said. One Gurmat silence can win over 100 controversies; ones who are humble and loving always win. (554)

Gurmukhs outwardly lose but they win over the whole world; the gait of winners-of-mind is unique. Their mind is quenched of all thirsts because of silently drinking divine nectar (Amrit). The consumers of divine taste of Naam have no time to speak because who can risk losing the divine taste of Naam (by indulging in controversies)? Like a child who cannot live without milk, the Gurmukhs can’t live without Amrit Rass of Naam. (555)

The Bhujangis had now tasted the divine wonderful taste of Naam and now they couldn't live without this Naam Rass. This new generation of Naam-Rassiye has risen and if they forgot Naam even for one second, they felt as if they had died; such was their dependence on Naam. (556)

The Gurmukhs’ technique of living is true and true is the Love for Naam Amrit. Their mind is taken by the sweet Amrit of Naam, and this is why they don’t feel anything when they are cursed or abused. The abusers ultimately get tired trying to abuse them but they can’t even bend one hair of Gurmukhs. The True Guru (Satguru) is the protector of His children and does not allow even hot air to touch them. (557)

The Residents of Village Chaminda get Wisdom

Suddenly the residents of Chaminda (village of Giani Harbhajan Singh) got wisdom but the residents of Phulawal (village of Giani Dalip Singh) were still bent upon doing the worse. Narangwal (Bhai Sahib’s village) is close to Chaminda; therefore they had some fear of Gurmukhs of Narangwal. In village Chaminda, there were many who were not outside of this Servant (Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee) i.e. they obeyed what I said. They themselves came to Narangwal to get advice from this Servant (Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee). (558)

Whatever advice this Servant (Bhai Sahib) gave them, they listened and obeyed; this way all the quarrel of village Chaminda was resolved. But the residents of Phulawal are extremely rigid people, Giani Dalip Singh was there as the Chandan tree is covered by Cobras and as the Rose and Champak flowers are surrounded by thorns. (559)

The precious jewel had been surrounded by Cobras who possessed dangerous and fatal bites. But the Cobras were fed up by their poisonous bites because they could not harm the precious jewel. They had the curtain of ignorance on their minds and now they resolved to do the worse atrocities. They were about to commit fearsome atrocities and for this reason they imprisoned the loving Gurmukh (Giani Dalip Singh). (560)

One of the Bhujangi, Bhai Harbhajan Singh's safety was secured by Bhai Sahib through mutual conversation but the relatives of Bhai Dalip Singh were far from Narangwal and were very stubborn heretics. They were bent upon violating his religion by cutting his hair.

Bhai Sahib could sense what was going on and for this reason could not sleep that night and kept doing Abhyaas. While in Smadhi, he saw the terrible vision of a group of barbers moving forward to cut Bhai Dalip Singh jee's hair. There was no time to arrive there physically. Bhai Sahib immediatly left his physical body behind and through his astral body, arrived at the scene of atrocity and reading the Mantr Shabad - Gur ka Shabad Rakhvare - carved out a security line around Bhai Dalip Singh. The security zone was very powerful but what happened when the barbers moved forward, is stated in the later stanzas to be posted soon.

Please read and have Anand.

-----------------------------------------------------------Translation Begins-----------------------------------------------------------

Bhai Sahib in Smadhi, views the terrible act of cruelty being planned on Bhujangi Dalip Singh jee

They placed security all around him (Bhujangi Dalip Singh); the heretics were going to perform some big atrocity. On top of their evil plans, very dark night arrived and the courageous brother was all alone amidst this. The heretics had planned extremely evil plan (to hurt the Bhujangi). The little brother of brothers (Singhs) became a prisoner, then how were the brothers going to get comfortable sleep? (561)

Today the brothers (Bhai Sahib referring himself as Brothers here) did not get comfortable sleep, because their Bairagi hearts were sad. 10 miles away (from the imprisoned Bhujangi), they were singing the songs of Bairaag (sadness due to separation) because their hearts were full of love and Bairaag. From the unseen, a unfathomable cry rose, and like lightening we sensed the grave situation. Very clearly, the whole scene (occurring 10 miles away) appeared before us and we saw what the evil people were planning to do. (562)

We saw the evil group around our brother; aggressors were doing horrible act of religious violation. They were going to commit an act of religious violation; they called a group of barbers. Once beholding that they were trying to dishonour the Kesh (of the Bhujangi), the possessors of divine-psychic-viewing were shocked (i.e. Bhai Sahib was shocked). Within moments the whole evil act was going to take place and there was now no time to delay any longer. (563)

Now physical assistance was not going to be happen soon, and no other solution seemed viable. So using the Astral Body (Sookham Sareer), we quickly drew a security line (Kaar) around the Bhujangi, by read Mantr Shabad “Chauki Chaugird”. The Shabad of Guru became a fort around him and there was nothing that the evil group was able to do. All barbers who had become embodiment of Jammdoots, were stupefied and could not dare to harm the Bhujangi. (564)

Suddenly, the consciousness returned and breathing too resumed in our body. The concentration came down from the mystical realms while reciting the Paath of Kirtan Sohila. The demand fell upon the physical body to act to protect the dear brother. To protect a brother from aggressors is the supreme duty of Dharmi brothers. (565)

this portion was edited from jot vigaas book because Bhai Sahib thought it showed the abusive families of the Gurmukhs in bad light. This event took place a long time ago and I'm sure none of the people involved in this incident are even alive anymore. Wouldn't it be a good idea to now add this portion back to jot vigaas book as it was originally intended?

Presented below is the next part. This part deals with Bhai Sahib coming out of Samadhi and marching towards the village of Bhai Daliip Singh who had been imprisoned there. They reach the village full of spiritual and religious vigour and find that the whole village is sleeping. There in a cattle barn they meet a person who accords great respect to Bhai Sahib jee and his companion Bhai Attar Singh jee.

Here Bhai Sahib has called his Jatha - Sodhak Dal. Sodhak Dal means such group that does Sodh-Sudhaaee of Dusht people.

--------------Beginning of lose translation------------------------
We got ready after performing Ardaas and placed our concentrations on Merciful Guru. We starting marching towards the place of incidence and it was close to midnight then. Out of the two marching, one was Veer Marmee and the other was Veer Dharmi of this Gursikh who was half their age i.e. was very young. (Bhai Sahib has called himself Veer Marmi (one who knows the pain of other) and has called Bhai Attar Singh Veer Dharmi). Both Dharmi brothers were marching briskly with great Josh (enthusiasm, excitement) towards their destination. (566)

They (marching Veers) did not inform other Veers (brothers) because there was an acute shortage of time. They decided to sustain all sorrows on their own self and not let hearts of other brothers get hurt. Just two Sewadaars (members) of Sodhak Dal (Bhai Sahib calls his Jatha Sodhak Dal here) are enough to break the fort of evil ones. Why bother the whole army (other members of Sodhak Dal) when this task is of only two Sewadaars. (567)

Ones who have been called on (by Vaheguru) to do this work, only they are required to obey this Hukam. Ones who want to obey the Hukams right away, they don't have patience to wait even one bit. The Parvaane (moth) who decide to jump in the lighted lamp, don't hesitate. Keeping peace within, both brothers were committed to fighting in the battlefield. (568)

By delaying for even small bit, the battlefield can be lost, therefore, both had decided to attain martyrdom in the battlefield, without delay. The nightingale bird reaches right in the garden despite all the security around it. Even if cobras surround the Chandan tree fully, still Harijan (men of God) do Upkaar (benevolence) (of rescuing the Chandan tree). By the time they reached the village, everyone except for a guard was sleeping. (569)

The two Singhs standing in the sleeping village were wondering which way to go in order to reach the place where their brother was imprisoned. They had come to this village first time and did not know where Bhai Dalip Singh resided. They were wondering whom they should ask and how about they should go in order to fix the evil ones. Right in front of them was cattle barn. (570)

A person guarding the cattle, was sleeping in the barn but he was not in deep sleep. As he heard the sound of Singhs, he woke up and recognized the Singhs. He immediately got up and fell at the Charan (feet) of Singhs. He said many words of respect for them. He exclaimed that great fortune of the village had awoken, that such Gurmukhs had come here. (571)

He said, "today I too have become Dhan that I had Darshan of Gurmukhs. Please tell me if I am capable of doing any service for you, and I will carry out your request as Hukam. I will immediately bring what you want, I have great happiness at your arrival." Singhs uttered "Dhan Satguru" from their mouth for having them meet such useful person. (572)

The Singhs said, "We require no service from you; just tell us about the house of the newly imbued one (Bhai Dalip Singh). How can we have Darshan of Deep Darshani (one who had Darshan of Jyot); we have great compassion for him. Tell us immediately, what occurred with our Veer, enable us to have Darshan of our lamp-like brother. We cannot wait to have Darshan of our Veer on whom we are sacrifice again and again." (573)

----------------------End of Translation------------------------

The next part is going to deal with the guard narrating to the Singhs what exactly occurred with Bhai Dalip Singh jee. This is a very interesting part, stay tuned.

Bhul chuk dee Maafi jee.
