ਸਉ ਮਣੁ ਹਸਤੀ ਘਿਉ ਗੁੜੁ ਖਾਵੈ ਪੰਜਿ ਸੈ ਦਾਣਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
ਡਕੈ ਫੂਕੈ ਖੇਹ ਉਡਾਵੈ ਸਾਹਿ ਗਇਐ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥
ਅੰਧੀ ਫੂਕਿ ਮੁਈ ਦੇਵਾਨੀ ॥
ਖਸਮਿ ਮਿਟੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਭਾਨੀ ॥
ਅਧੁ ਗੁਲ੍ਹਾ ਚਿੜੀ ਕਾ ਚੁਗਣੁ ਗੈਣਿ ਚੜੀ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥
ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਓਹਾ ਚੰਗੀ ਜਿ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥
ਸਕਤਾ ਸੀਹੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੈ ਮਿਰਿਆ ਸਭ ਪਿਛੈ ਪੈ ਖਾਇ ॥
ਹੋਇ ਸਤਾਣਾ ਘੁਰੈ ਨ ਮਾਵੈ ਸਾਹਿ ਗਇਐ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥
ਅੰਧਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਬੁਕਿ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
ਖਸਮੈ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
ਅਕ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਅਕ ਤਿਡਾ ਅਕ ਡਾਲੀ ਬਹਿ ਖਾਇ ॥
ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਓਹੋ ਚੰਗਾ ਜਿ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਚਾਰਿ ਦਿਹਾੜੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਕੀਤੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
ਗਲਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੈਨਿ ਘਣੇਰੇ ਛਡਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
ਮਖਂØੀ ਮਿਠੈ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
ਜਿਨ ਤੂ ਰਖਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਤਿਨ ਭਉ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰਣਾ ॥2॥In this Salok, Siri Guru jee has given us several examples to explain that a proud person is not acceptable in the eyes of Vaheguru. Below is Gurmat Vichaar based on this Shabad:
The Elephant and Sparrow BirdThe elephant eats unmeasured grains, sugar and ghee. In pride, it belches, grunts and scatters dust but after it dies, it has to regret. Same way this ignorant and crazy world dies in pride and regrets its actions after death. It should merge in Vaheguru after eliminating its pride. The elephant here symbolizes the powerful people of this world who roam around full of ego. After death they have to regret their actions, when they get punished.
The sparrow eats little but flies high in the skies. The sparrow pleases Vaheguru, provided it does Khudai Khudai i.e. recites Naam. Eating little here symbolizes not indulging too much in the pleasures of the world. Flying high in the skies symbolizes spiritually flying high in the high spiritual realms.
The Lion and Milkweed InsectThe lion kills and eats countless deer. The lion is so proud of its power and prowess that it cannot contain itself in its den i.e. is extremely egoist but after it dies, it has to suffer the consequences of its actions and regrets. The lion roars but can it impress its master – Vaheguru – like this? Such actions are not pleasing to the master – Vaheguru. This symbolizes powerful people of this world, who in the intoxication of power, hurt people and commit cruelties and atrocities. They are not pleasing to Vaheguru. After death, they have to regret their actions when they get punished.
On the other hand, the Milkweed insect is so humble that it eats the unsavoury milkweed plant but such humble insect is pleasing to Vaheguru, provided it does Khudai Khudai i.e. japps Naam. The insect symbolizes the humble Gursikh and the milkweed plant symbolizes the simple living of a Gursikh. A Gursikh lives away from the pleasures of this world and engages in Naam all the time. Such humble Gursikh is pleasing to Vaheguru as opposed to the proud powerful people of this world.
Conclusion of the SalokSiri Guru jee then preaches in the last 5 pankitis – this world is going to last only 4 days i.e. short period of time and by indulging in the pleasures of this world, one also has to suffer the sorrows associated with this world. There are many (like this daas) who talk a lot about eschewing (leaving) these pleasures but no one can leave them. The fly lands on the melted brown sugar and dies (because it gets stuck in it and can’t fly away). Here the sugar represents Maya and its pleasures. We are like the fly that gets stuck on melted sugar. We are so stuck in the pleasures and tastes of Maya that we can’t leave it. The agents of Maya like lust, anger, greed, attachment and pride don’t let us leave Maya and indulge in service of Vaheguru. Only such fortunate people, on whom Vaheguru gets pleased, are able to shed Maya and swim across this terrible ocean of world.
