When the Guru visited Kurukshetra in Haryana, a big fair was being held at the holy tank to celebrate the solar eclipse. There were a large number of pilgrims all over the country. On his arrival at the fair, Guru Nanak had Mardana cook them a meat dish of a deer presented to them by one of his followers. Upon finding that meat was being cooked on the holy premises, a large angry crowd gathered in anger to attack the Guru for what they thought amounted to sacrilege (Bhai Mani Singh, Gyan Ratnavali, pg. 123). Upon hearing the angry crowd Guru Nanak responded;
"Only fools argue whether to eat meat or not. They don't understand truth nor do they meditate on it. Who can define what is meat and what is plant? Who knows where the sin lies, being a vegetarian or a non- vegetarian?" (Malhar)

History tells us that to impart this message, Nanak cooked meat at an important Hindu festival in Kurukshetra. Having cooked it he certainly did not waste it, but probably served it to his followers and ate himself. History is quite clear that Guru Hargobind and Guru Gobind Singh were accomplished and avid hunters. The game was cooked and put to good use, to throw it away would have been an awful waste.

1. "Guru Nanak Dev jee said it's okay to eat meat in the Shabad."
Quote
2. "Guru Jee says that whether you eat meat or not, it doesn't matter. Guru jee says its a non-issue by explaining everything is Maas."

3. "Guru Jee in this Shabad is saying that a person should not do "Nafrat" with Maas because we are Maas, one's tongue is Maas, we are born in Maas etc. Therefore whether someone eats or doesn't Maas is up to the individual - we should have no opinion on Maas or say anything to anyone who eats meat. Teek hai that eating meat is not good but we should ask or tell someone anything to do with Maas."

4. "If there are Shabads that are against meat elsewhere in Gurbani, then don't they contradict this Shabad? Because Guru Jee saying that eating Maas is like eating Saag."
Quote
5. "Akal Takht's Maryada allows meat eating so how can they be wrong? People taking Amrit are told by Panj that meat is okay. The Akal Takhat Maryada is a continuous Maryada from the Gurus."
Quote
6. "If Bhagat Kabeer jee says eating meat = "Sabhai Rasaatal Jaae" then what about the people who do Panj Pyaare sevaa and say meat is okay and what about the majority of people in Delhi who take Amrit and eat meat because they were told it is okay."
Gurbani is so clear about Naam Abhyaas, then why is there so much confusion about it? This argument can't be used in favour of meat eating.Quote
7. "If Gurbani is so explicit that Maas is wrong then why is there so much confusion. Who is to say who is right and who is wrong?"

"During Guru Nanak Dev Jee and Guru Angad Dev Jee's Gurgaddi there used to be meat in the Langar. Only when Guru Amar Daas jee became Guru, did the Langar become vegetarian because Guru Amar Daas Jee was a vegetarian and thought it was wrong that not all could partake in Langar and it was rude to not eat what is given. Principle Satbir Singh states this in his book "Sikh Itihaas" and other authors claim this."

I was wondering, does the word "Mahaparshaad" always mean meat? Can't it be used as Great Parshaad (Mahaan Parshaad)?
I remember reading an article somewhere that in the book Sundri, there is a situation where Sundi smells Mahaparshaad being cooked by the Singhs. The english translator translated this as meat. The article said that Bhai Vir Singh Ji had in fact meant Great Langaar (Mahaan Parshaad) and not meat. Some people involved in Bhai Vir Singh Ji's institute in Delhi confirmed that Bhai Vir Singh Ji did not refer to Mahaparshaad as meat in Sundri.
So perhaps it can be assumed that Bhai Vir Singh Ji used Mahaparshad as a word to prasie Guru Ka Langar. Maybe this word was not referred to as meat in the past by the Panth as well?
