What does salok in ASA DI VAR mean?

Posted by Bahadur_Sikh
I am trying to understand the structure especially the importance of shalok(highlighted in red) .Like in Paudi the last verse basically is the essence of paudi so in similar lines what does shalok convey.

Salok Ma 1

Shalok, First Mehl:

Balihaaree Gur Aapanae Dhiouhaarree Sadh Vaar ||

A hundred times a day, I am a sacrifice to my Guru;

Jin Maanas Thae Dhaevathae Keeeae Karath N Laagee Vaar ||1||

He made angels out of men, without delay. ||1||

Mehalaa 2 ||

Second Mehl:

Jae So Chandhaa Ougavehi Sooraj Charrehi Hajaar ||

If a hundred moons were to rise, and a thousand suns appeared,

Eaethae Chaanan Hodhiaaan Gur Bin Ghor Andhhaar ||2||

Even with such light, there would still be pitch darkness without the Guru. ||2||

Ma 1 ||

First Mehl:

Naanak Guroo N Chaethanee Man Aapanai Suchaeth ||

O Nanak, those who do not think of the Guru, and who think of themselves as clever,

Shhuttae Thil Booaarr Jio Sunnjae Andhar Khaeth ||

Shall be left abandoned in the field, like the scattered sesame.

Khaethai Andhar Shhuttiaa Kahu Naanak So Naah ||

They are abandoned in the field, says Nanak, and they have a hundred masters to please.

Faleeahi Fuleeahi Bapurrae Bhee Than Vich Suaah ||3||

The wretches bear fruit and flower, but within their bodies, they are filled with ashes. ||3||

Pourree ||

Pauree:

Aapeenhai Aap Saajiou Aapeenhai Rachiou Naao ||

He Himself created Himself; He Himself assumed His Name.

Dhuyee Kudharath Saajeeai Kar Aasan Dditho Chaao ||

Secondly, He fashioned the creation; seated within the creation, He beholds it with delight.

Dhaathaa Karathaa Aap Thoon Thus Dhaevehi Karehi Pasaao ||

You Yourself are the Giver and the Creator; by Your Pleasure, You bestow Your Mercy.

Thoon Jaanoee Sabhasai Dhae Laisehi Jindh Kavaao ||

You are the Knower of all; You give life, and take it away again with a word.

The Vaars in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji are not like other Vaars. Vaars are made of Pauris (for example Bhai Gurdaas Ji's Vaars). Guru Sahib added Saloks to them. The Mehlla in the Sirlekh of the Vaar is the author of the Pauris in the Vaar, but the Saloks can be of any Guru Sahib. The Saloks that weren't put in the Vaars were put in

Two exceptions to this are Basant Ki Vaar and Vaar of Satta & Balvand, which only have Pauris.
