Becoming Humble
December 02, 2017 12:28PM
Does anyone have any tips how one can become humble? Humbleness and humility are two very important things as per Sikhi, but many people, including myself, struggle with it because of an exalted pride. Despite our efforts, sometimes pride can get the best of a person. Even if we try very hard not to "boast" about ourselves and our Sikhi to others, sometimes we do this to ourselves in our own minds (starting to think highly of ourselves for doing x, y, z). Although this is progress, its not exactly optimal.

Any tips/advice would be appreciated.

Guru Sahib gave us Sikhi, so He also has the Power to take Sikhi away from us at anytime as well.

With all due respect, people of all religion fall into this trap. Realization is the first step. Being Sikh means we treat ourselves dust of others, and as a student we are learning all the time. No one is without God particle. Please follow Guru Granth sahib ji.

Personally, I don't believe non-Amritdharis can be mukt, not do I feel that an Amritdhari and Non-Amritdharis is equal, but something I noticed in Gurbani:
"ਕਬੀਰ ਦਾਵੈ ਦਾਝਨੁ ਹੋਤੁ ਹੈ ਨਿਰਦਾਵੈ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਸੰਕ ॥
Kabīr ḏāvai ḏājẖan hoṯ hai nirḏāvai rahai nisank.
Kabeer, those who brag, shall burn. Those who do not brag remain carefree. " (Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Ang 1373) I do think that as Sikhs we should have a more active role in the world because only Guru Sahib can save anyone, and the message of our Guru should spread, and I think some people who are boastful of their Sikhi truly want the message to spread, but usually the problem is they talk about how great they are rather than how great Vaheguru and Guru Sahib are.

So as Sikhs, (or even as just humans), we should set aside how great we are, (materialistic or spiritual), and start saying "Vaheguru thank you for letting me be a Sikh, so many are lost, but you give hope", and that should be our message instead, "Look how much Paht I did".

So are Sikhs better than Non-Sikhs, I'd have to go with yes, but is Guru Sahib more important, absolutely, and that's something sadly both our youth and elderly are forgetting.

How about than Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Kabir Ji and Nam dev Ji . Problem is thinking personally not what Guru Granth Sahib ji says. As in Guru Granth Sahib says whom I say bad as all have god essence in them.

Becoming Humble: As soon as you say we are better than others, you are far from God, that is Ego, not being humble

@Sevak, Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji came with the power to give Amrit, even before his prakash in 1469. Also after some time all the Bhagats started following Guru Sahib, and nor is logical to openly insult Bhagats, as they had all taken Amrit from the formless form of Guru Sahib. Also there is no line in Gurbani that says the Bhagats didn't take Amrit; especially since all throughout Gurbani, Gur-Prasad is the key element. Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is Vaheguru, as well as Guru Sahib is the only way to Vaheguru, and I am not going to debate on that.

This is the nature of ego, that people perform their actions in ego.

This ego exists by the Lord's Order; people wander according to their past actions.

Simran” is derived from the Sanskrit word “smarana” which literally means “the act of remembrance.” Many enlightened souls have taught that by practicing simran, i.e. remembrance of God, one is purified and attains salvation.

“Si-mar” means “to die”. Through the act of constant remembrance, we kill our ego in order to have union with the ultimate Truth – God himself.

Tips about humbleness.

We are generally humble with our close family members, so a feeling of closeness with others (Naa Ko Berri Nahi Bigana) should help.

True greatness makes one humble. Here is a quote “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”― Plato. So try to be a great person.

Once we are engrossed with SIMRAN, humbleness comes automatically. One cannot afford to lose SIMRAN RAS; by loosing humbleness.

Our self respect is a possession worth having. Maintaining it, should not be be confused with loosing humbleness.

They do, what GURU SAHIB is making them to do. So, see their helplessness in their deeds.
