Gur/Guru Satgur/Satguru in Anand Sahib

As our brains were tunes to learning the Anand Sahib at young age but obviously without paying full attention to the laga/matran we ended up with a lot of bad habits. One of them is mixing up Gur and Guru or Satgur and Satguru in Anand Sahib pauris. As its been in the subconscious for a very long time, is there any way gursikhs can advise to get rid of the mistakes and rewire the brain to remember the Anand Sahib with correct pronunciation of these words.

Have another Gursikh sit with you with Pothi and follow along as you recite the Bani, note down all the mistakes you make. Once you have the list, keep reciting the parts where you made mistakes again and again correctly. You need to read Bani consciously to get rid of the mistakes this way.

As Veer Gagan Singh Ji has mentioned you need to be conscious while reading Bani. One way can help is keeping in consideration Gurmukhi Grammar principles when doing paath through memory. It can help you distinguish if the word ends with a mukta or laga matra ( besides the cases in which laga matra is added for poetic reasons) . Lets take the noun Guru for example. When Guru has a preposition ( through, for in, by, without) next to it then it will be spelled with the orthographic pattern ਗੁਰ.. Lets look at some examples from Anand Sahib ( the prepositions are in bold)

1. ਜਾਣਿਆ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ॥
2. ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਸਉਪਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਹਜੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਇਹੁ ਸਹਸਾ ਇਵ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੮॥ ( bihari gives meaning through grace of guru)
4.. ਪਾਇਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕੀਨੀ ਸਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥

In the last case you can notice the preposition through is within the word ਗੁਰ. because of the siharis presence. There are some cases`when the preposition is invisible and in such cases the word well be spelled as ਗੁਰ. For example the preposition of is invisible in the following pangti
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣ ਲਾਗੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਅਨਹਦ ਤੂਰੇ ॥੪੦॥੧॥ but one knows "of" is there because of the meaning. As long as we are conscious of the meaning and poetic flow then we will have an easier time distinguishing whether a mukta should be present or not. We often make these mistakes when we are doing paath through memory but not being mindful of the meanings.

Suthra Singh, it would be good to get thorough understanding of Gurbani Viyakaran before making such statements. Chunch Gyaan (half baked truth) is very dangerous and misleading. Here is an example, from Siri Anand Sahib where apart from ਗੁਰ, the word ਗੁਰੂ too has preposition next to it:

ਆਨੰਦੁ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

Sorry if I wasnt clear in my previous post. As previously mentioned for the most part these principles are constant with the exception of poetic flow.

Let us look at the 21st pauri of Anand Sahib



ਜੇ ਕੋ ਸਿਖੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੇਤੀ ਸਨਮੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ heres an exception a preposition with the orthographic pattern ਗੁਰੂ


ਹੋਵੈ ਤ ਸਨਮੁਖੁ ਸਿਖੁ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਅਹੁ ਰਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਲੇ ॥ rule remains

ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਧਿਆਏ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੈ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥ rule remains

ਆਪੁ ਛਡਿ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਪਰਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਏ ॥ rule remains

There was an exception of the first pangti because of its poetic chaal ( laghu guru, soft and deep phonemic sounds). Grammer rules have consistency but there are few exceptions when poetic measures take precedence. If you can memorize the few poetic exceptions then you wont need to memorize the rest if you keep the grammar principles in mind.

Suthra Singh, you don't seem to fathom the rules of Sambandhaki Pad (prepositions) as they relate to nouns. Your posts under this thread relating to Gurbani Viyakaran are misleading as they are basically erroneous.

Kindly fix my misleading errors I wouldnt want somebody to drift from Sikhi because of my misleading information.

Just wondering do you disagree that nouns will become mukta with presence of preposition, or grammar principles dont always follow suit for poetic reasons?
