Stories of Ardaas Shakti - Part 1 - Bhai Sahib interrupted an Ardaas

Posted by Kulbir Singh
In the coming days, this Daas will be writing some Saakhis, involving many Gursikhs, about Ardaas Shakti. The idea is to understand the concept of Ardaas and then apply it to our personal lives and to get close to Vaheguru jee. Let’s begin this new series with a Saakhi involving Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee.

In 2004 we had the big fortune of meeting Giani Gurdit Singh jee who wrote the famous book Mundavani. We were about 6-7 Singhs, all in Blue Baana and Dumaalay and we arrived early at the residence of Giani jee which was in the most affluent area of Chandigarh. The neighbouring Kothis (houses) were all of ministers and other VIP people. There was a lot of police presence in the area.

At the time we met Giani jee, he was very much in news because of his new book Mundavani. He told us later on that he had been receiving many threats. When he met us, he thought that we were there to confront him or something. He was a bit apprehensive and quiet. Soon after we arrived, two famous scholars, who were working with Giani jee, also arrived. We all sat in his huge and very well maintained lawn.

We introduced ourselves as Singhs from Canada and I also reminded him of my conversation with him on phone, few months ago. Soon he opened up and then we had some very good discussions with him. Here is a Saakhi little-known Saakhi of Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee that he narrated to us.

Ardaas Shakti – Bhai Sahib interrupting Ardaas

There was a very loving and humble Gurmukh couple who did not have any children. Sometimes Vaheguru deliberately holds some gifts from us, so as to prompt us to do Bhagti and turn towards Him. Of course, many times we lack things because of our past Karma. In such cases too, we need to build Karma or destroy bad Karma through Naam and Gurbani, and this way attain the necessities we need in this life.

The Gurmukh couple did benti (request) before the Jatha to do Samagam at their residence and then perform an Ardaas for them. The Jatha including Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee arrived at the Gursikh’s house and did Gurmat Samagam. The couple did sewa of Gursikhs with great faith and very humbly. Bhai Sahib in particular was very pleased with their sewa.

At the conclusion of the Samagam, the Ardaasiya Singh (one who performs Ardaas) started doing Ardaas. In the end, when the Ardaasiya Singh said, “O Sache Paatshah, the Gursikh couple has done sewa of the Samagam. Please fulfill their wish and bless them with a son.”

Bhai Sahib who was standing in the Sangat, interrupted and speaking loudly pleaded, “O Sache Paatshah, not one, but please bless them with two sons.” (ਸਚੇ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ, ਇਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੋ ਬਖਸ਼ੋ!)

Everyone was surprised that Bhai Sahib had interrupted the Ardaasiya Singh and asked for 2 sons instead of 1 that Ardaasiya Singh was asking for. Bhai Sahib had been so pleased with the couple's dedication to Sikhi and their serving spirit that he went out of his way to reward them. Such is the reward when we humbly serve Gursikhs.

Giani Gurditt Singh jee then told us that within two or three years, the couple was blessed with 2 sons and they are still alive today. Such is the power of Ardaas of Sangat and such is the reward we get, when we serve the Gursikhs humbly and earnestly. The following Gurbani pankiti comes to mind at this time:

ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮਾਗੈ ॥ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
(If someone is looking for Chaar Padarath, he should serve the Gursikhs)

May Guru Sahib bless us with ability to serve Gursikhs and forever remain humble before Gursikhs.

Daas,
Kulbir Singh

Below, is a true account of the power of Ardas:

In 1941 my Grandfather was stationed in Afghanistan with the British Army. In his Rasala, was a group of 21 Faujis, and one day they decided to approach their Subedar to request celebrating a Gurpurab. The Subedar who was a strict rehitvaan Singh gave the permission for the small group to gather all necessary supplies.

Later on that evening various English and Dogra officers from other rasaley who often frequented post gathered at a meeting. Somehow that evening, word got out that my Grandfathers rasala were celebrating Gurpurab and all regiments in the local area were quickly notified.

As soon as the Subedar heard, he was not impressed as the food ordered was only enough for a small group of men. Nevertheless the following morning at 4am (day of the Gurpurab) he gave orders to all the men to bathe from head to toe and to prepare the langar with simran on their lips.
They had also arranged for a halwai to make poorian, kheer and parshad.

In the tent where the langar was to be served the Subedar posted a guard and gave him strict orders not to let anyone other than the people serving in. He also instructed for all the tubs in which the dhaal, sabji, poorian etc were placed to be covered with chadraan and not to be uncovered at any time. Hence, the people serving were not to look into the tubs even when serving.

Once all the langar was ready, the Subedar performed Ardas.

On the day of the Gurpurab approximately 2000 soldiers from various regiments turned up at 0900. Langar was served in accordance with the strict instruction of the Subedar and until 1300 hours.

All the men were served 4 poorian each along with dhaal, sabji, kheer an so forth. No one came back for seconds.

With Guru Ji's mahaan kirpa, all the men ate to the full and the remaining langar had to be buried.

Thank you "Unjaan" jee for sharing this wonderful Saakhi. An Ardaas performed by a Rehitvaan Khalsa does not fail.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

A lot of ardaas shakti related stories come back from memories. Will try to share as many as possible with the sangat.

It was in 1994 or 1995. Daas was given the seva of preparing the degh at our hostel where a rensabai kirtan had been organised by the singhs. Plan was to do the rensabai kirtan and start Akhand path next morning amd continue with another divas suhela and rensabai kirtan after the bhog of Akhand path sahib.

Daas and 2 other singhs prepared the kitchen in hostel mess, by cleaning the gas cooker and sarabloh bhaande. As daas started preparing the degh daas asked one singh how much was the rasad. He answered it was 4kg. Daas didnot realised that the laangri singh had provided aata and gheo only for 2 kg degh but the sugar was 4 kg. So keeping the ratio in mind daas started preparing the degh. Water and sugar quantity ended up being double than rest of the rasad. Daas was enjoying the ras bhinni bani being sung by another singh who was standing by and put all the chaas (water & sugar syrup) in to the kadhai.

It turned out that the degh became liquid like water. As the langar hall was quite far away and it would not have been possible to get the rasad again. Singhs including daas got very bairagmayi as rensabai kirtan was in full swing and we felt it so wrong that we will not be able to present the degh to Guru sahib.

Suddenly one of the singhs who used to always remain engulfed in naam simran turned into the kitchen. As he heard us he told us to turn off the heat and put a cloth on the kadhai. He told us to go and enjoy the kirtan and do ardaas to guru sahib. As we went out we saw the singhji doing benti in very bairagmai avastha to guru sahib and following the ardaas he started doing Sri Sukhmani Sahib path and started moving the degh with sarabloh spatula.

We came in to the divaan hall. Daas couldn't lift his head for the remainder of the kirtan and stayed in ardaas while sitting in the divaan hall. At the time of samapti after the Hukamnama when the singhs started distrubuting the degh, daas's naam khanda went faster with benti to guru sahib. A singh came to daas and made me saavdhan and asked me to take gaffa. When daas recieved the degh, daas couldnot believe seeing the degh. it was as perfect as it could be and tasted divine. Only thing daas could do afterwards was Sukar.

Such is the power of ardaas.

Haanji Veerjio

“Har Jaisa Purakh Na Labhai Sabh Dekhya Jagat Men Tole”

Daas remembers one more very powerful incidence related to ardaas shakti.

Daas started getting weakness in legs and slowly it kept increasing. This was followed by long periods of fever and back pain. GP was not able to find the reason and he recommended physiotherapy. Daas started taking physio sessions but the problem kept growing. Slowly daas developed chest pain as well and it became extremely difficult to lie on the bed on side due to the pain which felt like something piercing through the body. The condition got worse and the stage came when daas was not even able to climb stairs or even “Matha tek” to Guru Sahib. It was not possible to bend and get up. Then started the never ending medical tests. Visits to neurologists, orthopedics and all kind of specialists. Daas was hospitalised, biopsies done but doctors couldn’t find anything.

The majority of this happened when daas singhni was expecting second baby. After the birth of the bhujangi singh the family went to Amrit sanchar samagam. Daas was helped by 2 singhs to bow before guru sahib. When daas’s singhni pleaded to Guru Sahib, the panj who were very dayaal did ardaas to Guru Sahib for daas’s health.

We came home and in next few days the condition got even worse and all of a sudden daas lost all the strength in the body. There was no feeling and all body parts went numb. Someone in this condition would have thought what was the use of the ardaas by the panj when the condition was getting worse. But my Guru Sahib is very dayaal. He had heard the ardaas and it was time to see the results of the ardaas.

Daas was taken to hospital in an ambulance. After few hours a junior doctor who was on duty checked daas and ordered some blood tests. The results came in an hour suggesting daas had lost virtually all the Vit D in the body. No calcium was left and the bones had become brittle. The reason for chect pain became evident when doctors did the dexa scan and found that daas had minute fractures in the ribs due to loss of calcium. Daas was kept in hospital for a few days and started recovering from there on.

Something such simple as a deficiency was not found by the best medical specialists who did all the possible tests like CT Scans, Muscle Biopsy, Nerve tests to name a few. This went on for nearly 2 years. But with the ardaas the problem was diagnosed by a junior doctor in matter of minutes with a simple test.

Vaheguru ji ka khalsa
Vaheguru ji ki fateh

Khalsa ji,

I am new to this forum and this is my first post. It was narrated in one of the Gurmat samagams in Delhi and shows the power of Ardaas. While writing this post, I would have done lot of mistakes, please forgive me. My intent is only to learn and gain a better understanding of Guru Sahib’s teachings by interacting with the online sangat at this forum.

“Panjva Bhejo naa”

Once a principal of a village school in Punjab, invited Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir Singh Ji and his fellow singhs to do an akhand keertan samagam in his village. This samagam was to be a 4-day samagam and began on a Wednesday. Lot of school children attended it and some fo them expressed their desire to do amrit chhak to the principal. The amrit sanchaar was to be done on Sunday, the last day of samagam. On Thursday evening, the school principal sent a message for Bhai Sahib requesting him to prepone the Amrit Sanchaar. The principal was worried that 3 days of time might change the minds of amrit abhilakhi children. Bhai Sahib agreed to prepone the samagam and decided to conduct it next day (Friday) morning.

In the morning, one of the Bhai Sahib’s fellow singhs came to him and said that they were one singh short for serving on Panj pyaare. He also said that if we go to the city for bringing a singh, it would be almost evening by the time we return. Bhai Sahib said only Guru Sahib can find a way out now. He came to the main hall in the village gurdwara and asked all of the sangat to recite a path of Siri Japji Sahib before doing the ardaas for the Fifth Singh. After the recitation of Siri Japji Sahib, Bhai Sahib started doing the ardaas and by the time conclusion came, Bhai Sahib said

O Sachhe Patshaah 'Panjva Bhejo na” He kept on saying “Panjva Bhejo naa” (send the fifth singh to serve as Panj Pyaara), “Panjva Bhejo naa”

Since, such a great Gurmukh was doing ardaas, how could it go unfulfilled.

Birthī kaḏe na hovaī jan kī arḏaās.
The prayer of the Lord's humble servant is never offered in vain.

Nānak jor govinḏ kā pūran guṇṯaās.
Nanak takes the strength of the Perfect Lord of the Universe, the treasure of excellence.

Simulatneously Guru Sahib was doing kirpa and making arrangements for Bhai Sahib’s ardaas to be fulfilled.

A Gurmukh Pyaara (Bhai Sahib’s very good friend) was passing through the village and seeking directions to go to the city, unaware that Bhai Sahib is in the village. Suddenly, this Gurmukh Pyaara saw a beautiful Baana clad Singh riding a bicycle coming towards him. Before this Grumukh could ask him for directions for going to the city, this Singh said are you looking for the place where Bhai Randhir Singh ji is doing samagam? The Gurmukh said Oh Bhai Randhir Singh ji is in town. He said yes and gave him directions to the school. When this Gurmukh reached the village gurdwara, he saw Bhai Sahib in complete Bairaag avastha, with tears rolling down from his eyes, saying “Panjva Bhejo naa”. This Gurmukh asked a person in the gurdwara as to what for was Bhai Sahib doing ardaas. He explained the situation to him and then this Gurmukh said “Panjva aa gaya” (the fifth singh to serve as Panj Pyaara has arrived).

After this, Bhai Sahib completed the ardaas and then met his old friend. Both of them hugged and were completely in tears. Bhai Sahib asked his friend: how come you are here? He replied that I was passing by and a beautiful Baana clad singh directed me towards you. One wonders who that beautiful Baana clad singh was?

Do you know what was the name of the 5th Singh?

Veerji,

I had heard this in a gurmat samagam about 6 years ago. I remember that the katha vachak ji said that the 5th singh was Sant Waryam Singh Ji's father-in-law. After googling, I found that his father-in-law's name is Sant Heera Singh. I dont know much about sants in Punjab (being from Delhi) besides Sant Attar Singh Ji mastuana sahib and to some extent baba nand singh ji. From the story, I presume he would have been a Chardikala Gursikh.

Daas second veer chatrik jee, it is an authentic event that happened during Bhai Sahib’s time. Daas remembers reading this either in Bhai Sahib’s books or written by some one else, where the village’s name (Some where in Gurdaspur or Amritsar district), school’s name, principal’s name and how many students did Amrit Chhak all are mentioned there also daas watched a video tape of Bhai GurIqbal Singh Jee Amritsar few years ago and he also mentioned the same Sakhi. Yes, it can be part of Gurmat literature section and as soon as more details are available those can be added.

This saakhi has been written by Sant Baba Shaam Singh jee about 100 years ago. The source does not provide any date or time this incident happened and it does not matter when it occurred. The fact is that this saakhi coming from a Brahmgyani and therefore is 100% truth.

Sirimaan Sant Bhai Ratan Singh was a top level Mahapurakh (holy person) and a resident of Siri Amritsar Sahib. In his Ashram (dera, dwelling) Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee was prakashmaan (present) in the best room. One day after the Sukhasan of Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee was done in the evening, due to heavy rainfall, the ashram was filled with flood water. The roof of Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee’s room also fell down. The will of Vaheguru so happened that Maharaj jee’s saroop from its place of Sukhasan, fell in the flood water

One of the Sewadaars of the Ashram noticed that Maharaj jee’s saroop had fallen in water. He rushed to Sant jee and said, “ਜੀ, ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਮੰਦਰ ਕੇ ਗਿਰਨੇ ਕਰ ਜਲ ਖਾਤੇ ਬੀਚ ਡੁੱਬ ਗਏ ਹੈਂ।” (Jee, Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee has drowned in water due to falling of the roof of the room)

When Sant jee heard this, he said, “ਹੇ ਮੂਢ, ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਕੋ ਤਾਰਨਹਾਰੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਔਰ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵੈਤਰਨੀ (ਨਦੀ) ਆਦਿਕੋਂ ਸੇ, ਸੋ ਆਪ ਕੈਸੇ ਡੂਬਤੇ ਹੈਂ, ਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਐਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹਿਣਾ।” (O stupid person, Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee is the savior/liberator of the whole world, from this world and next world (from Vaitarnee rivers etc.), so how can they (Siri Guru jee) drown; therefore don’t say such words again)

Then in hurry, Sant jee got up and rushed to the room of Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee. What they noticed was that really Maharaj jee’s saroop had entered the flooded water. When Sant jee brought light there, he noticed that water was so deep that at that time, no one could enter the water to get Maharaj jee’s saroop out. Then Sant jee, with folded hands, with taka (one paisa) in his hand, and promising to present Karah Parshaad of Rs 1.25, said, “ਹੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ, ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ, ਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਤਖ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੀਜੀਏ, ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦੀ ਭੁਲ ਖਿਮਾਂ ਕਰੋ, ਹੇ ਸਵਾਮੀ ਜੀ।” (O Satguru, O Swami jee, you are the savior of the whole world. Please have mercy and give us your darshan (glimpse), forgive our mistakes.)

After ardaas when Sant jee opened his eyes, what he saw was that Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee had come above water and were floating on it. How did Satguru jee come out of water? It was like a sincere devotee gets perceptible glimpse of his deity after the lifting of the veil of ignorance.

Due to the mountain faith of Sant Ratan Singh jee, Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee in concrete way appeared on the top of water. Then Sant jee expressed great joy. Maharaj jee’s rumaalay (clothes) were wet but from inside, Maharaj jee’s saroop was totally dry. Then Sant jee got dry rumaalay for wrapping Maharaj jee’s saroop.

The above saakhi has been written by Baba Shaam Singh jee in his book “Siri Bhagat Prem Prakash” to prove the point that Vaheguru is such a strong supporter and protector of his devotees (Bhagats) and how much effect there is in the Ardaas (prayer) of his devotees.

Below is an account that most of you are probably familiar with. I thought it would be apt to also add this to the spiritual stories section.

In 1964, when some of the weapons of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji were brought back from England, an Englishman, in complete Sikh form, accompanied them. Out of curiousity, someone asked the Englishman what inspired him to adopt the Sikh form. Was it due to respect for the weapons or was there some other reason? The explanation given by him at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is something that should be of interest to all readers.

"My name was A. David. I happened to be commanding a Sikh Regiment during World War II. My Regiment suffered very heavy losses fighting the Germans. Most of the Sikh jawans (soldiers) of my Battalion were killed. Only a few survived and we were all surrounded by the Germans. As there were very remote chances of our survival, I called the Subedar major of the Battalion and informed him about our precarious situation. Death was facing us and there was no chance of survival. I suggested to him that the jawans should individually attempt to escape from the enemy encirclement and save their lives.

The Subedar Major replied, ‘We cannot bring ignominy to the Sikh Regiment by running away from the battlefield.’ However, he suggested that they should perform an Akhand-Path ceremony and take action as per the Divine Hukam (Holy Command). Accordingly, necessary security arrangements were made and the Akhand-Path ceremony was completed without interruption. After the supplicatory prayer (Ardas), the Divine Hukam from the Holy Scripture was explained to me by the Subedar Major and the religious teacher (granthi). The Guru’s instruction as per the Divine Hukam was that we should not abandon the battlefield; victory will be ours. Then I conveyed to them the miracle that I had witnessed during the supplicatory prayer. While standing with my eyes closed during the Ardas, a fully armed Sikh on horseback with a unique grandeur appeared in front of me and ordered ‘Follow me.’ I pointed out the direction in which the fully armed Sikh went after giving the order and asked them about the identity of the warrior. The Subedar Major said that from the description I had given, he seemed to be none other than Sri Guru Gobind Singh himself!

So, we got ready and launched an attack in the direction pointed out by the Guru. After a short while, we were able to break through the German encirclement and save ourselves. We then got in touch with the Brigade Commander on wireless and requested for additional help.

After the war, I reflected upon the incident and the divine personality who had saved our lives from the impregnable enemy encirclement in a desperate situation by ordering me to follow him. I made up my mind to follow him for the rest of my life. I resigned from the Army and along with my daughter, embraced Sikh Dharam with the initiation ceremony of the Khalsa. Now my name is Devinder Singh and my daughter’s name is Surjit Kaur. This is due to the blessings of Guru Gobind Singh that he made us his disciples."

Does anyone know around what year this incident involving the 5th Singh occurred? Was it before Bhai Sahib's imprisonment or after?

Kulbir Singh

Singh Sahib jeo,
Am writing writing this based on my assumption.
This sakhi might have occured in 1910 and the school mentioned was actually Malwa Khalsa High School. Chatrik was re-reading Rangley Sajjan(Jeevan of Sri Bhai Gurbaksh SIngh jee) in English and noticed the similarities of the story mentioned. The extract from Rangley Sajjan is as below:

Quote

......Somehow Sant Hira Singh ji 'Daudpur wale' also came along as also Bhai Joginder Singh from Patiala. Such are the amazing coincidences in work of the Divine . ..........

its on pg. 87 if you are refering to the PDF file.

Bhai Sahib ussually toned down the language very well when it came to spiritual related matter concerning him. In other words, to remain humble and avoid recognition.

So it was before the imprisonment. If all the assumptions Chatrik made are correct.
