According to Sikhan di Bhagat Mala and Sooraj Prakash, Bhai Jodh Jee Rasoiya was a Hazoori Sikh of Sri Guru Angad Dev Sahib Jee/Sri Guru Amar Daas Sahib Jee. Bhai Jodh Jee was formally a Brahmin by caste before becoming a Sikh of Guru Sahib. He used to do seva in langar and prepare the food for Guru Sahib and the Sikh Sangat without any pride over doing so. Sikh Sangat used to bring monetary offerings and give them to Bhai Jodh Jee, he would faithfully submit everything at the feet of Guru Sahib and use the money only for preparing langar. Bhai Jodh Jee used to think however much seva I get a chance to do the better off I will be.

All the food that he prepared in langar was distributed during the day, he would keep nothing for the next day if anything was left over he would take it and feed it to the animals outside. If there were not any animals around to eat the spare langar he would throw it in the river. If there was even any water left in the gaagar (vessel/pot) he would also spill that and not keep it for the next day; what to speak of food.

In this fashion, Bhai Jodh Jee faithfully obeyed the hukam of Guru Sahib and with great love and wisdom performed the seva of Guru ka Langar. Bhai Jodh Jee would eat whatever food was left over from langar, in this way Bhai Jodh Jee passed his days in seva. He would serve all Sikhs as Sangat of Guru Sahib with great devotion. If a visiting Sikh ever came he would always get langar ready and serve it to him or her without delay. Bhai Jodh Jee was never lazy and would always dispel the hunger of all who visited Guru Sahib’s langar. As well as cooking the food, he also used to clean the used dishes of the sangat. Seeing this seva of Bhai Jodh Jee’s Sri Gurdev Jee was very happy and did the kirpa of Sat-Naam Daan-Gyaan on him. Bhai Jodh Jee’s pains of janam-maran were dispelled and he obtained a great state of Anand.

ਜੋਧੁ ਰਸੋਈਆ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਿ ਦੁਤਰ ਤਾਰੀ।
Jodhu Rasoeeaa Dayvataa Gur Sayvaa Kari Doutaru Taaree.
जोधु रसोईआ देवता गुर सेवा करि दुतरु तारी ।
Jodh, the cook, served the Guru and swam across the world ocean.
jodha (naamaa sikha guroo daa rasoeeaa) laaṅgaree devataa subhaau see, guroo dee sevaa kara ke kaThana sṅsaara toṅ tara giaa.

Bhai Gurdas was given the "key" to understand the Guru Granth Sahib by the Guru. He compiled the GurSikh’s thought. In Bhai Gurdas Jee’s Vaaran (poetry), he says:
‘jodh rasoeeaa devthaa gur saevaa kar dhuthar thaaree||’
‘Jodh, the cook, served the Guru and swam across the world ocean.'
(This Shabad is by Bhai Gurdaas Ji in Vaars Bhai Gurdaas on Pannaa 11, 11th Vaar, Pauree 15)

Bhai Jodh Jee was a Brahman by caste. He was intellectual and held knowledge. He came to visit Guru Angad Jee’s darbaar (court). He experienced happiness, which he never felt before. Everyday Bhai Jodh would listen to Guru’s Keertan and sermon and then go to the Langar Hall, where he would wash all the jhoote bhaandey (dirty dishes) of the Sangat.

The GurSikhs saw that Bhai Jodh does a lot of Sewa but he does not sit in Pangat (with the congregation) to eat Langar. It must be because he is a Brahman and thinks he is higher than us that he doesn’t eat with rest of Guru’s Sangat. The GurSikhs reported this to Guru Angad. "Guru Angad Jee, Bhai Jodh does a lot of Sewa but he does not eat Langar in Pangat". Guru Angad Jee called Bhai Jodh to see him. Bhai Jodh arrived in the presence of the Guru.

Guru Angad Jee asked him, ‘Bhai Jodh is it true that you do not eat in the Pangat like the rest of the Sangat?’ ‘No Maharaj! I do eat in the Sangat,’ replied Bhai Jodh. The GurSikhs said, ‘see, now he is a liar as well!" The Guru told Bhai Jodh, "you are holding something from me. When do you eat your Langar? Tell me."

Bhai Jodh, now had tears in his eyes and he told the Guru infront of the GurSikhs, ‘Maharaj, when I clean the dirty dishes of the Sangat, sometimes people leave jhoot (left overs). I collect the jhoot of the Sangat in a small bowl. When all the Sangat leave, I then eat the left over jhoot.’

The listeners by where shocked to hear this, they thought Bhai Jodh didn’t eat the rest because of his pride and ego. But they were wrong, how could a person be so humble and consider themselves so low. Guru Jee asked Bhai Jodh, ‘O Sikh, why do eat the left overs of the Sangat. What makes you eat Jhoot?"

Bhai Jodh replied, "Maharaj, when I came to see you for the first time, I had a ego and pride that I was an educated Brahman. But I heard from you Guru Jee, that when we have hankaar (ego) we cannot obtain the happiness. Maharaj I hear from you that you don’t like maan (pride) and hankaar (ego)." "I put jhoot in the mouth of hankaar, in the mouth of my Ego, the thing that doesn’t let me get happiness", said Bhai Jodh.

"Don’t say that Bhai Jodh!" replied the Guru. "Your sins have been washed, the Guru now dwells within you".

The next day, Bhai Jodh sat in the Pangat (congregation) and ate Langar. Some people come to the Gurdwara just to criticise and pick up faults of people, we see this today. To get happiness (kushiaan) it is hard. You have to endure lots – sewa (selfless service), simran (meditation) as well as criticism as this is the sign of living in Kaljug (era of falsehood).

The GurSikhs who reported Bhai Jodh the day before saw him eating in the Pangat. They told him, "Why are you eating in the Pangat? Has the leftovers (jhoot) finished or something? We knew you were a Pakandee, a fake."

Now the reply Bhai Jodh said was heart moving (in Bairaag). "I ate Jooth before because I had ego and pride within me. But now within me is the Guru (the Guru’s teachings were enshrined in his heart). You can put a dirty spoon in the mouth of Ego. Ego used to dwell within me. But when look within me now, when I contemplate within now, I see only the Guru and only feel the Guru. When I eat I, I eat for the Guru, I feed Guru within. I cannot feed my Guru jhoot so I cannot feed my Guru jhoot which resides within me."

Guru Angad Maharaj Jee over heard this conversation. He hugged and embraced Bhai Jodh Jee. "I will give you now all the happiness’ Bhai Jodh", said Guru Jee. But the person who is happy with the Guru, then what else does he need in the world. Hence Bhai Gurdass Jee called Bhai Jodh "devtaa" (Godly).

NB: The above was written by sombody but I personally think that left over is not in the dishes but in the cooking pots. As Bhai Gurdas ji wrote Pishon bachia AAP KHAVANDA., Mean serve the Sangt first and then eat. As far as To clear ones ego.. washing dishes and cleaning floor, shoes etc by the person who had not done it before was enough. second thing I don't think sangat was not finishing the langer at Guru Sahib time in person.

WJKK WJKF I agree with Trust Singh and before reading his translation I had read Sri Suraj Parkash as well. Thats what I understood myself too. The Sakhi writer may have misunderstood the meanings.
This is a great sewa what Bhai Jodh ji was doing and it was enough to get blessings from Guru Sahib.

There are a very few people who can do this kind of sewa without greed.

May Waheguru bless us so we could do sewa without selfishness.

I think the story of eating jhooth is self made because left over does not mean jhooth.
Somebody misunderstood or knowingly followed Hindus story..
Think! we write and say that it's not good to leave jooth food/langer in plate.
At the time of Guru Sahib there were not that many facilities that too much food was there to be served that can be wasted. There was enough to feed all but not to waste.
Guru Sahib was teaching Sikhi marg/traditions so I can't agree that Sikhs were not finishing their food, i mean not listening to Guru Sahib
Guru Sahib wrote in Gurbani that one can get rid of ego by Following Guru Sahib's teaching not by eating jooth
How can one become a Barahmgiani by eating jhooth? so if it is right then we all can start eating jhooth.. then what's the Naam and Gurbani for? Whats the importance of following Guru Sahib's rest of teachings!
The Sakhis/history is to teach us something so This story of eating jooth teach us to eat jhooth and become brahmgiani! What's the Bani for?

We should improve our history and teach others too. Anyway Bhai Gurdas ji didn't mention that Bhai Jodh was eating jooth.
Sri Suraj Granth does not say that Bhai Jodh was eating jooth..
Who ever wrote the Sakhi has made a big mistake purposely or misunderstood.
May Waheguru give us sense.
