Waheguru ji ka Khalsa
Waheguru ji Ki Fateh

I have been contemplating this article for a while as I was in double mindedness if I should or should not write about this, but as it might inspire others I decided to write it. I have not given the full name of the person here as the individual is still alive and in Chardi Kala.

I am fortunate enough to be related to this person.

Uncle was a very good child from a very young age and always did his paath and simran and he was a good student too. When he grew up he joined Indian Air Force and became an officer. So far he had not been blessed with Amrit. At one point under the wrong influence he even cut his hair but he was scolded by his father-in-law and he immediately kept his kes again.

He never touched sharab (alcohol), meat etc and always did his paath. One day one of his colleagues tried to play a prank on him and in the canteen, they added bit of alcohol to his Campa Cola ( A fizzy drink like coke). As soon as he had the first sip he knew something was wrong so he put the drink down and left the canteen in an angry manner. At that point he decided that he was going to take Amrit soon for once and for all and stay away from these type of people. The person who had mixed the drink with alcohol, got stuck in barbed wire when returning home that night, which are surrounded around the cantonment / military area and was slapped numerous times till he passed out. According to him invisible hands were beating him up.

Well as for Uncle ji Soon after (In 1960) he decided to go to Hazoor Sahib for Darshan and took his wife with him. When the train finally got to Manvar Station and Uncle Ji was sitting and his wife was asleep)
A very tall Singhni entered the train (above six feet) with a radiant face and high keski.

She came and said Fateh to Uncle ji. Uncle ji was completely left mesmerised by her presence and lost for words. Then she said, calling uncle ji by his real name , “Do you know who I am”. Uncle ji replied in negative and was a bit confused as to how she knew his name as he had never met her before. He was left completely speechless when she said in commanding voice “I am Mai Bhago, pachaniya ?(Recognise now ?)”.
Uncle ji was completely shaken by authority in her voice then she said , Tu hun hazoor Sahib Ja (You go to Hazoor Sahib) but stay at Baba Nidhan Singh Gurudwara (also known as Langar Sahib). Uthe teri Udeek hundi aya (You are being awaited there). There you will be blessed with Amrit, then she walked towards the moving train’s door. The train was moving at a fast speed. Uncle Ji remained seated for a few minutes and ran towards the door after her but no one was there. She had disappeared. At the next station Uncle ji went looking for her in the other compartments and station but could not find her. He got back on the train a bit confused, his wife was awake now but he did not tell her anything. (Mata Bhag Kaur, from the time 40 Mukte Singhs of Muktsar, is also known as Mai Bhago as some of the sangat here might not be aware.)

So they finally got to Nanded and then to Baba Nidhan Singh Gurudwara. To his surprise a Nihung Singh was standing outside waiting for him. He called uncle ji by his name and gave him a key and pointed him to towards a room and instructed them to leave their belongings there, have ishnan , darshan of maharaj and then go to to Langar Hall. When Uncle went to Langar Hall , Sant Harnam Singh Ji , Main Jathedar of the gurudwara at the time were sitting there in a corner with his eyes closed. He called uncle ji again in a commanding voice again by his name and said tomorrow morning at amrit vela go to Hazoor Sahib after Kesi Ishanan and there you are to take Amrit. Uncle ji was speechless and he could just utter Sat Bachan.(as you wish).

Uncle got to his room and told wife that we are to take Amrit at Hazoor Sahib but his wife was not so sure and she refused saying it’s too early and other stuff but finally uncle ji got her ready some how.

In the morning, they went to Hazoor Sahib and at the time Bhai Mohan Singh was the Jathedar where bhai Kulwant Singh is these days who did seva of Angeetha Sahib room. He saw uncle ji and said in a roh (in war spirit) , Cheti Ja Tenu uthe udheekde aya (Go quickly they are waiting for you there), pointing to a room where Amrit was being prepared, Uncle ji and his wife went to the room.To their surprise they were the only one to be blessed with the Amrit. Panj Pyare looked at Uncle ji and his wife said to his wife in roh , you are not ready yet go and do your kesi ishnan again and come back here. She went, had ishnan and came back. Surprisingly they sent her back again as she still had doubt in her mind and third time they asked :now are you ready to give your head and she said yes. By this time she was fully ready in her heart too. Sant Harnam Singh himself was the Jathedar of Panj Payare.

Finally Uncle ji and Auntie ji were blessed with Amrit. After that Amrit. Uncle ji could not sleep for 40 days. At day he used to work at his Air-force base and at night naam Simran. He said those 40 days Naam Simran did not stop for a moment and he needed to eat minimum and he ate without any Bukh. He was in complete bliss. Uncle resigned from Air force after 1984 attack saying he did not want to serve these dogs who has desecrated our Harmandir Sahib. He quit his career fully believing in Maharaj and was soon after he was offered a job as a professor of Aero-Nautical Sciences in an engineering College.

Since then I think Mai Bhago’s location has been found too where she spent her last days in Chardi-Kala and a very small Gurudwara stands there now in a small and unknown village near Hazoor Sahib. Uncle ji has retired from the college and now provides Sewa to a very prominent Gurudwara and plans to spend all his life there as this was also instructed by Mai Bhago. Occasionally he does katha (Amazing but not commercially available) and many people’s life have been changed after coming into his contact. I was a proper manmukh, but I was fortunate enough to be related to him and I was completely transformed from a Manmukh guy to a Amrit Dhari Singh just by being in his company. I asked him about his amazing katha and he said when he sits to do katha, his own mind completely goes to sleep and words just come out in a mechanical manner without his own input. One of the guys, I met in UK who told me that once he went to this Gurudwara where a Singh was doing katha and during that katha his mind was made up that he would take Amrit as soon as he could and he took Amrit as soon as he got back to UK and now he is a Chardi Kala Singh. To his suprise and mine, when he told me about this Gursikh , this Gursikh turned out be my Uncle.

I have not disclosed the names as I have written about his life without his authority.
Uncle ji is still with us and in Chardi Kala. He always clears all my doubts or questions about any thing related to Sikhi with in seconds. To me, he is probably one of the Singhs who must have lived at the time of Mai Bhago or probably in her Jatha, who had to come back to this earth for some reason.

There are many other instances which I will write later on.

I hope this story will inspire people and also help providing the faith that these Chardi Kala Singhs are still around, we just do not know about them as they keep a very low profile and stay away from anything which might cause haume in them.

Buk Chuk Muaff and hopefully Uncle ji will forgive me too for wrting this story.

DEATH AND AFTER — SOME PERSONAL REFLECTIONS —

HARDIT SINGH

Over countless centuries, world religions and psychologists have been speculating on what lies beyond death. No one has given a clear answer except for offering a variety of choices. The Western idea, which encompasses Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, hovers around the Day of Judgement, Resurrection, and Heaven and Hell. The Eastern religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, etc., theorise on transmigration and karmic philosophy.

In this paper, I shall discuss this question based on some of my personal observations and experiences.Human beings have a mortal body and an immortal soul (atma), which is a speck of the Divine Soul (Parmatma). While the soul is the core, the mind is its outer garb which manifests itself at birth and takes control of the body. The mind is the product of maya, so, is vagrant and mischievous, but essential to foster individual personality. Psychologists maintain that the mind is connected to the brain and soul to the heart. What the mind does or thinks, casts reflection on both the body and the soul. The body is diseased and the soul soiled. The mind with its agents (sense organs) disappears or dies with the body, but the poor soul has to bear consequences of the mind’s misdeeds in the next world. Since the mind is the culprit, all the religious instructions are meant to tame it. The conflict between the mind and the soul can be compared to that of a fight between a demon and a god. For that matter the whole universe is based on conflicting factors such as pain and pleasure, happiness and sadness, good and bad, etc. This is the law of nature which can also be termed as His play.

Like the water which rushes down the hills, valleys, and plains to merge with its master — the ocean, soul also yearns to meet its Prime-Soul. The human body is the place where the soul is closest to its objective, but it is separated from it by a wall of falsehood (koor di pal). This wall can be dismantled through loving remembrance of God and service of His creation. Our deeds, after death, will be adjudged as to how far the soul has traversed its distance away or towards its goal. Nothing else, including riches, status, or even religious affiliations shall be of any avail. In this court, there is no Hindu, Muslim, or Sikh. Human life is thus a rare opportunity that comes for attaining closeness to God. Besides, human life is not only head of all the world species, but is also bestowed with discriminating brain and faculties to improve his lot and to render service to others.

We are alive when the soul abides in our body. The moment it departs the body collapses. This is what death is. Death is certain and ordained. No one can escape its clutches. Every human being is destined to live a certain number of days and breaths and not the age. These numbers cannot be increased or decreased. One can, however, prolong life by maintaining his equipoise under all circumstances. Lust, anger, greed, attachment, ego and fast life (hurry, worry, tension, and indulgence) tend to quicken the breathing tempo. Ancient yogis lived long lives as they could control their breath. Death will only come when the allotted number of breaths is used up.

My young uncle, a very pious and saintly soul, suddenly died and woke up after a few minutes. He told the gathered family members that his namesake from the same village was to die instead. Lo, wails and cries were heard at that time from a nearby house where another Surjan Singh died. A dying person is visited by either messengers of death (yamas) or angels according to one’s bad or good deeds. The yamas drag out the human spirit mercilessly whereas the noble souls are honourably led by angels. During the 1962 Chinese aggression, my wife, while siting out in Jorhat (Assam) saw four or five yamas dashing past her and within seconds one of our aircrafts exploded in the air killing the sole pilot known to us. My wife described the yamas as “tall, almost touching the sky, with ugly and dreadful features”. Their body and features particularly hands and feet are disproportionately large. On the other hand, a very pious, saintly and dear friend of mine at Jalandhar had warned his wife of his approaching end. After about a month, he exclaimed that a party of Sikhs singing shabads with Sant Baba Jawala Singh of Harkhowal at their head, were entering his room to take him away. The above saint had left this world about ten years earlier and was our godfather. The noble soul said good-bye to his family, bowed reverently to the holy spirits and closed his eye.

Late Bhai Vir Singh, a great mystic, novelist, and poet had published a small tract early in his life narrating a dream of his death. Bhai Sahib found himself in the other world where he met some people who talked about purifying him. They lit a pyre and asked Bhai Sahib to enter into it which he did. To his utter astonishment, he neither feared the fire nor felt any heat. Instead he felt his elated soul soaring high above, while he watched his body burning below. Then someone explained to him that the dream-drama was enacted to take away his fear of death which he had considered as dreadful and end of all. He was then told to return to earth, to explain to people not to be afraid of death as it is only a change of state and not the end. He was also urged to convey the message that the only merit that counts in the other world is the “remembrance of His Name”, which Bhai Sahib has fully conveyed in his voluminous writings. Bhagat Kabir is not only happy in death but considers it as the gateway to the Beloved.Bhai Sahib’s dream supports the common belief that immediately after death the soul soars high and looks back at its burning body from a distance and feels light and relieved.

After death, except for the liberated souls, all others are taken to the court of True Justice (Dharam-raj) to answer their conduct on earth. The soul is fettered in chains and dragged along through a tortuous dark tunnel. In this court, the soul is told its good and evil deeds written in its account by the “secret agents of the Dharam-raj (Chitar & Gupt)”. Punishment is declared according to the nature of offences. In this trial no intervention or recommendation of any one matters. The punishment is solely based on one’s deeds. Persons who have not made the mark either turn into evil spirits or go into the cycle of death and birth, i.e. transmigration; the others who are partially qualified may be given another opportunity of human life. Dharamraj has no jurisdiction to handle or try the liberated souls. Those persons who have dyed their souls in the love of God, merge with the Supreme-Soul or are assigned tasks for redemption of humanity. There are no restrictions on them and are free to do whatever they like. My above-mentioned uncle died after a year of the incident. He had confided to his very close companion the date and time of his end. He even secretly prepared funeral clothes and wound up his worldly affairs beforehand. Since they were very close, he had also told him that should he feel separation, he could meet him anytime in the periphery of the Golden Temple at night-time as long as he did not disclose it to anyone else. His friend used to meet him there till he let the secret out.

A Muslim lady saint attracted to Sikhism, called Bibiji, lived in village Maili in Hoshiarpur District (Punjab). She was a devotee of Sant Baba Jawala Singh of Harkhowal mentioned earlier. One day she asked her followers to accompany her to a nearby hill top to spend the night there. In the morning they all came back. When repeatedly questioned about the purpose of the short visit, she reluctantly informed them that the Babaji had expired and his soul carried by angels was to pass over the hill and that she wanted to pay her respects to the great soul.

In the morning prayer of the Sikhs (Asa-di-//) staves No. 2, 3, and 14 paint the plight and delight of the human beings on their death. The translation by late Professor Puran Singh (1881-1931) is given below : The soul has to struggle to the Kingdom of Righteousness... The man who gives himself to physical pleasures, finally drops down dead, his body
is burnt to ashes. ............ But the soul, as it emerges out of the body is found fettered in heavy chains. ............ The inner man finds no protection anywhere, no one in his later affliction comes to his help. ............ And it is only then, beyond death, that man trembles with acute repentance… the soul weeps and cries. ............ As we do here, so shall we be judged. By our actions we shall be nearer Him or farther off. ............ Those informed of Truth find the way out and are lifted up. And those not informed never rise to grace. ............ Oh Lord Truth ! Those who have dyed their souls, With the colour of Thy Glory, Thy Love, Thy Name, have won the struggle of life and have passed above it, beyond it. ............ And the lovers of darkness are in struggle forever. The blind of heart thus lose the opportunity of physical life that comes for attaining freedom.

The above picture is corroborated in Japji stanza 34 as well.

All religions believe in the existence of the next world and the Court of True Justice where the soul has to render account of its deeds. Those who have meditated on God’s Name and have accumulated the treasure of good deeds will be approved, while the rejected ones will suffer and repent their indulgence in sensual pleasures. Judgement is purely based on ‘reap as you sow’ topped by ‘His Grace’.Death is not a horror but a blessing in disguise for those who lived this life in the pure spirit of beauty and love of Him. They love it, court it, and embrace it as demonstrated by the Sikh Gurus, the four sahibzadas, and numerous Sikh martyrs of the eighteenth century.

Remember death, forget not. Death, remembering that all must die, is a great chastener of the human mind. Rembering Him or Naam Simran is the harbinger of love, peace, and tranquility.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

I would like to apologise to the Sangat and I would like to make a slight amendment to the below Stanza from above article about uncle ji.

"One day one of his colleagues tried to play a prank on him and in the canteen, they added bit of alcohol to his Campa Cola ( A fizzy drink like coke). According to him invisible hands were beating him up."

It's correct up to the point where Uncle ji had the Sip of the spiked drink and left the place in angry manner.

The incident of his colleagues being beaten by invisible hands is a separate incident where a Amritdhari Colleague of uncle ji had the alcohol under wrong influence and then he was beaten by hands invisible to him....

Please forgive me for this mistake.

Rest of the article is correct.

Sangat is bakshanhar.

Please forgive my ignorance. Would Singh's ever be reborn after attaining Shaheedi? Why would the mukte leave a state of Mukti to again enter what we are trying to escape, 8.4 million joons?

It's highly unlikely that 40 Muktay would come in joonis like ordinary people. As Veer Charanjeet Singh has pointed out above, Bhai Sahib wrote that such Mukat roohs (souls) don't come in Joonis like ordinary people.

Veer Kulbir Singh jio, I read one of the saakhi of Bhai Avtar Singh Ji who was shaheed during 1978 Visaakhi Samagam and when Bhai Avtar Singh ji was invited by Dr. Surinder Singh ji, he said that it is after the vichoora of Sirsa we are having langar together... please share your views on that story.

The above link has the story which I wanted to get your views. All the Singhs/Singhnees fought during Sirsa would be Shaheed, so the coming to worldly life again would be similar for everyone.

There is a difference between Shaheed Mukat Rooh and an ordinary Shaheed. Ones who keep full Rehit-Behit and are Naam Rasiye Gurmukhs, they most probably get the status of Mukat Shaheed if they attain Shaheedi e.g. Bhai Fauja Singh jee, Bhai Anokh Singh jee Babbar and Bhai Avtaar Singh jee Khudda Kuraala but ones who are not in full Rehit-Behit and are not yet Naam Abhyaasi, they do Seva as Shaheed Singhs for sometime and then get Mukat. Sometimes these Shaheed Singhs become Mukat directly by doing Seva as Shaheed Singhs and sometimes they take Janam again (Guru Sahib alone determine the fate of His Gursikhs). The 40 Muktay were Mukat Shaheeds and deserved place in the Khands of Mukat Gurmukhs i.e. Karam Khand or Sach Khand and as such were not subject to taking Janam again.

Baaki Guru Sahib knows the ultimate truth.

Thanks, it helps. Sri Hazoor Sahib has lot of kautaks. I remember I was around 7 or 8 years old when we went to Sri Hazoor Sahib. There were too many people and everyone was pushing to get inside and suddenly a Nihang Singh hold my dad and called him out from the rush.

Nihang Singh: WaheguroojikaKhalsaWaheguroojikiFateh
My Dad: WaheguroojikaKhalsaWaheguroojikiFateh
Nihang Singh: Do you eat meat?
My Dad: Yes, I can't live without it.
Nihang Singh: Don't eat it anymore.
My Dad: Confused... after a while mentioned... OK, I can leave meat but not eggs.
Nihang Singh: "Je chor hi banna hai te jaroori jutti chor banna hai, eat whatever you want. There is a reason I pulled you out from this crowd. Don't eat meat." He went after saying this.
My Dad stopped eating meat and eventually whole family.

When I realized the importance of Amrit, I think about that Nihang Singh sometimes and can't thank him enough smiling smiley

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

Uncle ji has never claimed to be a shaheed from Muktasar's 40 Muktes. I do not think he is one of them either although he might be a Singh from that time of Mai Bhago. Rest Maharaj knows what the truth is.

He is a very humble guy and full of prem and bhakti for Maharaj all the time. He does not discuss his spiritual experiences either. We are aware of only a few of those incidents from his early days after Amrit Shakna. According to him we should not divulge our spiritual experience or time we spent on Simran, Path etc to every one.

I don't think he ever sleeps more than 4 hours and still have one of the most refreshing faces, I have seen in my life. There are a couple of instances known to us where Shaheed Singhs have appeared by his side. One of them is given below.

There was an incident where a colleague of uncle ji was quite jealous of uncle ji. Uncle ji was always favoured by his Senior officers due to his honest and hard working nature. This person always used to make insulting remarks against uncle ji but uncle ji always ignored him.

Once they had small argument at the Air-Base. In the evening this person had a bit of alcohol and grabbed a sword from his house and then decided to go to uncle Ji’s house. He got there late at night and started shouting ,swearing and challenging uncle ji to come out for a fight. Uncle ji stayed inside for a bit trying to take no notice of his stupid behaviour but eventually his shouting became quite abusive. So Uncle ji grabbed a hockey stick and decided to go out but Auntie ji tried to stop uncle ji from going outside. But uncle ji said, “Enough is enough, this guys need to learn”. Uncle ji went outside stood in front of the guy and asked him to leave. This guy became more abusive and attacked Uncle ji with his sword. Uncle ji quickly saved himself and hit him with the hockey stick on his head and with only one blow that guy ended up on the road with his eyes wide open. Uncle ji stood there a bit shocked as he had not meant to hit him that hard and bit worried too. Uncle Ji called a taxi, took him to the hospital and also informed this guy’s family and he also contacted one of his senior officers to inform him of this incident. Uncle Ji thought that his collegue was going to die. The senior officer assured uncle ji that not to worry as they were aware of other person’s alcohol issue so military police were not called either.

The guy who had got hit, stayed in Comma for three days and when he woke up, first think he asked was to bring uncle Ji as he wanted to talk to him. His family called Uncle ji. Uncle Ji thought this guy would blame him for every thing and curse him.
But to his surprise, he said to Uncle Ji,” when you came outside, you were alone but when you hit me, five Sings in Neela Bana just appeared behind you and one of them had his hand on your hockey stick too”. Uncle ji understood one of the Shaheed Singhs had helped him as he had not hit the guy so hard himself.

This guy took Amrit straight after and both of them are good friends now. Now he is a Chardikala Singh too with full faith in Maharaj and he still comes to see uncle ji atleast once every six month because he lives quite far from Uncle ji’s place. He can never forget faces of those five Singh standing by Uncle Ji. They still laugh about that one incident. They put it down to the fact it was this singh’s turn to be blessed with Amrit so all these incidents just happened for this reason.

Agree with Kulbir Singh and Inder Singh Ji. They have the option to come back and help fight injustice, give pairaa or mix gupt with sangat - some Gursikhs have experienced and even had Darshan - but not to be reborn.
