Poems for Gurpurab of Siri Guru Raamdaas jee Maharaj

Next Tuesday, October 9, 2012 is the Gurpurab of Siri Guru Raamdaas jee Maharaj. Everyone is requested to post poems in Punjabi, English, Hindi, Urdu or whatever language you know, to glorify the great Avtaar of Siri Guru Raamdaas jee Maharaaj. I am going to begin this thread by a Mangal written by the legendary poet - Mahakavi Bhai Santokh Singh jee Chooramani:

ਹਰਤਾ ਬਿਘਨਾਨ ਮਹਾਂ ਅਘ ਕੋ, ਉਰ ਆਤਮ ਗਯਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਤ ਜਯੋਂ ਹਰਿ।
ਹਰਿ ਦੇਤਿ ਬਸਾਇ ਸੁ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੇ, ਕਮਲਾਸਨ ਧਯਾਵਤਿ ਜਾਹਿੰ ਭਜੇ ਹਰਿ।
ਹਰਿ ਬੰਸ ਬਿਖੇ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਭਏ, ਹਤਿ ਰਾਵਣ ਕੋ ਲਿਯ ਸੰਗ ਚਮੂੰ ਹਰਿ।
ਹਰਿਦਾਸ ਤਨੈ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਗੁਰੂ, ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਮੋਹ ਸੰਘਾਰਤਿ ਜਯੋਂ ਬਡ ਕੇਹਰਿ।

In this Mangal, Mahakavi jee has used the word ਹਰਿ in different meanings. The first ਹਰਿ means sun, the second ਹਰਿ means Vaheguru, third ਹਰਿ means Vishnu or Shiva, fourth ਹਰਿ (ਹਰਿ ਬੰਸ ) means Surya-Vanshi i.e. the clan of RamChander jee, fifth ਹਰਿ means monkey, sixth ਹਰਿ (ਹਰਿਦਾਸ) is part of ਹਰਿਦਾਸ who was the worldly father of Siri Guru Raamdaas jee and the last ਹਰਿ (ਕੇਹਰਿ) is part of the word ਕੇਹਰਿ which means lion. The word ਹਰਿ has about two dozen meanings in Sanskrit dictionaries and poets from the past have used this word extensively in their poems especially when writing riddles in poetic form.

The meanings of this Mangal are as follows:

1. Siri Guru Raamdaas jee is the taker or extinguisher of problems and sins; and illuminates the divine knowledge (Aatma Gyaan) within the seeker like sun (gives light in darkness).

2. Siri Guru Raamdaas jee makes Vaheguru Hari reside within his Servants as Brahma is said to meditate (with full concentration) on Hari Vishnu.

3 and 4. Raam Chander jee came in the Surya Vanshi clan, he killed Ravan using the army (ਚਮੂੰ) of monkeys (ਹਰਿ) but Siri Guru Raamdaas jee the son of Haridaas jee, singlehandedly killed Moh (very powerful Bikaar) as strongly as a lion kills a deer.

Please forgive me for not posting a poem but instead I'd like to share a sakhi from Guru Sahibs time. First time I've come across this one. From the writing style, it seems like you may have written it, but there was no signature on Sikhee.com

Dhan Guru Ramdas Sahib jee was doing kaar-sewa of sarovar at Siri Harmandir Sahib - Siri Amritsar Sahib. A lot of sangat used to do sewa in digging the sarovar and doing other kind of sewa. Soma Arora used to to sell ghunganiyaan (a kind of snack) to residents of Siri Amritsar Sahib and this way made his living.

One day in the evening Guru Sahib saw him and asked him how much vattee (profit) he had made. He came over to Guru Sahib and did matha tek and with extreme humility answered Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib asked him to hand over his all day’s earnings. Soma did not hesitate for a bit and placed all he had at the charan of Dhan Guru Ramdas Sache Paatshah jee.

Soma was a very poor person and met his ends with great difficulty. Second day too, Guru Sahib asked him how much he had earned and asked him to give all his earnings to him. Guru Sahib kept doing this for 5 days. Soma who was always broke, did not have any doubts on Guru Sahib. He trusted Guru Sahib one hundred percent and believed that Guru Sahib knows better.

On the sixth day, Soma saw Guru Sahib at the Sarovar looking at the sangat doing sewa, with full Kirpa-Drishtee (gaze of grace). This time Soma did not wait for Guru Sahib to ask for the money but he came, matha tekked Guru Sahib and placed all his earning at the lotus feet of Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib, who was only testing Soma, was extremely pleased at Soma and said, "Ajj asee laina nahi, kuchh dena hai. Ajj taun tu Soma nahi, Soma Shah hoiya" (Shah means very rich person).

Guru Sahib’s bachan of calling Soma, Soma Shah, forced the abundant force of Vaheguru’s power to come in action. Within days Soma became a shah. He became a shah of not only money but also of Naam.

This is a great saakhi and we can learn a lot from this. We all know that all that we have has been given to us by Satguru but yet when it is our turn to do some sewa or give back something to Guru Sahib or his panth, we find thousand reasons not to do so. We become selfish. May Guru Sahib give us the wisdom of Bhai Soma Shah.

ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀਉ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਲੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਰੋਰੀਏ ਕਿ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਆਨ ਹੋ ਸਕਣ ਐਸੇ ਖਾਲੀ ਭਾਂਡੇ ‘ਚ ਅਲਫ਼ਾਜ ਹੀ ਨਹੀ ਹਨ। ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਚਾਹੁਣ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਸੰਭਵ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਉਪਮਾ ਆਪਜੀ ਸਾਰਖੇ ਬਖਸ਼ਿਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਹੀ ਲਿਖ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਸਭਨਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਇਕੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜੀ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਹੋਗੀ॥

What a beautiful thread and like Unjann jeeo I would like to extend with a saki of Guru Sahiban. I apologize I haven't the creartive talent for poems such as displayed here the only website to have such poems also - congratulate you on that too.

Unjan jeeo or anyone else - extending that saaki slightly of Soma Shaa - the descendants of the Soma jee are still around and they are the main owners and major stakeholders of those shops and bazars you see just outside the Harimandar Sahib complex.

What hit me today was of a sakki about Guru sahiban jeeo when they became son in law of Guru amardaas Jee and started doing seva as normal. Guru sahibs - shreeeks ( cousin' and uncles) saw this as beztee to their family and asked Gurur Amardas Jee that he Bhai Jetha jee should come back to the family and work with them and leave Amritsar to which Guru Amardas Jee replied as Bhai Jetha Jee yourself. Upon asking Bhai Jetha jee replied I will never leave here - when i was rulda firda in the galees (streets) of lahore these cousins and uncles never thought of bezti to their name at that time how come they think this is beztee now!!!!

This is of course due to Bhai Jetha Jee who earlier had promised Gurur Jee- He never thought of his own ease and never felt tired. He said this body was not his, but it was his Guru's and his Guru could use it in anyway he felt was best. He was had no temper what so ever, that, even if someone spoke harshly to him,he would never retaliate.
