Recently a Gursikh informed me about this topic of avgun and avgan. I was not previously aware of this, so for the benefit of those who also may not be, I thought I should share the below:
‘ਅਵਗਣ' ਨਾਂਵ ਦਾ ਅੰਤਲਾ ਅਖਰ ਣਾਣਾ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਹੈ । ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਹ ਬਹੁ ਬਚਨ ਹੈ । ਭਭੇ ਸਿਹਾਰੀ ਨਾਲਿ ‘ਸਭਿ’ ਤਦੇ ਹੀ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ । ਏਸ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਮਾਣ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਇਕ ਹੋਰ ਨਿਯਮ ਮਿਲਿਆ । ਉਹ ਇਹ ਕਿ ਜਿਥੇ ‘ਗੁਣ’ ਪਦ ਹੈ ਓਥੇ ਤਾਂ ਗਗੇ ਨੂੰ ਔਕੁੜ ਨਾਲ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ‘ਅਉਗਣ’ ਤੇ ‘ਅਵਗਣ’ ਪਦਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਗੱਗਾ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਹੈ । ਬਸ, ‘ਅਵਗਣ’ ਯਾ ‘ਅਉਗਣ’ ਪਦ ਅੰਦਰ ਗੱਗਾ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਹੀ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ । ਕਈ ਥਾਵੀਂ ਲਿਖਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਭੁਲ ਨਾਲਿ ਯਾ ਛਾਪੇ ਦੀ ਗਲਤੀ ਨਾਲ ‘ਅਉਗਣ’ ਦੇ ਗਗੇ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਨਾਲ ਔਂਕੁੜ ਲਗ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ । ਏਹ ਨਿਯਮ ਭੰਗਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ । ਸੁਤੇ ਗਲਤੀ ਹੈ ।(ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਰਣਧੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ, ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਗਾਂ ਮਾਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਲੱਖਣਤਾ, ੧੯੮੭, ਪੰ ੧੪)Rough translation: The last letter of the noun ਅਵਗਣ is a ਣ with no lagamatra on it. For this reason, it is plural. As previously shown, the ਭ with a sihari in ਸਭਿ is also plural. From this Gurbani example [ਸਭਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਮੈ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ||], another rule is shown. That is this: where ਗੁਣ is alone in Gurbani, the ਗ has an aunkad on it however ਅਵਗਣ and ਅਉਗਣ both have a ਗ with no lagamatra attached to it. That’s it, the ਗ in ਅਵਗਣ and ਅਉਗਣ will always be without an aunkad. In many places, by the mistake of the writers, or mistake of the printing, the ਗ of ਅਵਗਣ and ਅਉਗਣ incorrectly has an aunkad on it. The breaking of this rule is not deliberate but just a mistake. (Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh Jee, Gurbani Diyan Laga Matran Di Vilakhanta, 1987, p. 14)
Some commonly sung Gurbani pangtee examples where the ਗ incorrectly has an aunkad on it include:
ਹਮਰੇ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਹੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਹਰਿ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਵੈ || (ਅੰਗ ੧੬੭)
ਹਮਰਾ ਗੁਣੁ ਅਵਗੁਣੁ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਆ || (ਅੰਗ ੬੨੨)
ਪਿਛਲੇ ਅਉਗੁਣ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਗੈ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਵੈ ||੨|| (ਅੰਗ ੬੨੪)
ਹਮ ਅਵਗੁਣਿ ਭਰੇ ਏਕੁ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਛਾਡਿ ਬਿਖੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਈ || (ਅੰਗ ੧੪੦੬)In the below example ਅਵਗਣ correctly appears without the aunkad on the ਗ, so care should be taken to pronounce accordingly:
ਸਭਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਮੈ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ || (ਅੰਗ ੭੫੦)There are scores of examples but the above are just some of the more well-known ones. The purpose of this post was to bring attention to this matter with regards to the correct spellings and pronunciations of ਅਵਗੁਣ/ਅਵਗਣ and ਅਉਗੁਣ/ਅਉਗਣ. That is: when an aunkad appears on the ਗ of ਅਵਗਣ or ਅਉਗੁਣ it should not be there and therefore should not be pronounced or written.
