ਇੱਕ ਸਿੱਖ, ਕ੍ਰਾਂਤੀਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਗੀ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਸਥਾਨ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੰਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਅੰਤਮ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਹੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਰਣਧੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਸੰਤ ਬਣ-ਬਣ ਬੈਠਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਗੁੱਝਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ‘ਸੰਤ ਪਦ ਨਿਰਣੈ’ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਵਿਚ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਰੜੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਵਰਨਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ; ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ, ਸੰਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੰਤ ਪਦ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ ਦੀ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਹੋੜਿਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਫਾਂਸੀ ਲੱਗਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਇਆ ਸੀ।

ਵਾਕਿਆ ਇਉਂ ਹੈ, ਸੰਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਗੁਰੂਸਰ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਦੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿਚ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਸਨ। ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਕੀ ਕਰਨੈ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸੋਚਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਯਾਤਰਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਪੁੱਜੇ। ਓਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਬੇ-ਰੋਣਕੀ ਸੀ। ਕੀਰਤਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਆਵਾਜਾਈ ਸੀ। ਘੱਟੋ-ਘੱਟੋ ਫੁੱਲ ਪਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕ ਤਾਂ ਉਥੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ-ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸਨ। ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਤੇ ਕੀਰਤਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਹੀ ਮੈਨੇਜ਼ਰ ਸੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹੈੱਡ-ਕੁਆਰਟਰ ਕੀਰਤਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਹੀ ਸੀ।

ਸੰਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਜੋ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਦੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ, ਉਸ ਮੈਨੇਜ਼ਰ ਪਾਸ ਰਹਿਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੀ। ਮੈਨੇਜ਼ਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਬੱਬਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਤੇ ਸਮਰਥਕ ਸਨ। ਕੀਰਤਪੁਰ ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀਆ ਦਾ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਉਪਰ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਗਿਆ।

ਸ਼ਿਮਲਾ ਗਰਮੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ, ਉਂਝ ਵੀ ਹੈੱਡ-ਕੁਆਰਟਰ ਵਾਂਗ ਸੀ। ਹਿੰਦ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਦਫ਼ਤਰ ਸਰਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਮੁੱਖ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਸ਼ਿਮਲਾ ਹੀ ਸੀ, ਜਿਥੇ ਚਾਰ ਕੁ ਡੱਬਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਅਫ਼ਸਰ ਆਉਂਦੇ-ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸਨ। ਬੱਬਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਪੈਸ਼ਲ ਗੱਡੀ ਜੋ ਸ਼ਿਮਲੇ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ ਹੀ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਤਨਖ਼ਾਹ ਵਾਲਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। ਬੱਬਰ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਫ਼ਾਈ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਫ਼ੈਸਲਾ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ। ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਲ ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੱਡੀ ਉਲਟਾਉਣ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਉਂਤਾਂ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਪਿਆ। ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਜਿਥੇ ਗੱਡੀ ਮਿਲੀ, ਉਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਦੇਸੀ ਬੰਬਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹਮਲਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਗੱਡੀ ਦਾ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਹੋਇਆ, ਬੰਦੇ ਮਰੇ। ਉਸ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਏਸ ਹਾਦਸੇ ਦੀ ਪੜਤਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਾਂ ਇਸਦਾ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਕੀਰਤਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਮੈਨੇਜ਼ਰ ਠਹਿਰਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ। ਬੱਬਰ ਆਪੋ-ਆਪਣੇ ਟਿਕਾਣਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ।

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਏਧਰ-ਓਧਰ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਭਾਈ ਰਣਧੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਪਾਸ ਨਾਰੰਗਵਾਲ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਲੱਗੇ ਤੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਕੁਝ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਮੈਨੇਜ਼ਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਗਈ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਥੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਹੋਣ ਲੱਗੀ। ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਜਥੇ ਤੋਂ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਛਕ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਦੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੋਂ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਪੱਕੀ ਠੌਹਰ ਚੰਦੂ ਮਾਜਰੇ ਦੇ ਜ਼ੈਲਦਾਰ ਸਤਨਾਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਪਾਸ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਸ. ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੇ ਸ. ਦਲੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਆਈ. ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਦੱਸ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਕਿ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦੇ ਹੱਥੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਬਚਾਉਣਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਲੋ-ਨਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ, ਗਿਆਨੀ ਅਰਜਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਪਾਸ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਘੁੰਗਰਾਣੇ, ਮਾਜਰੀ, ਗੁੱਜਰਵਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਫਲ੍ਹੇਵਾਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ, ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾ, ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਦਸਮ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਦੀ ਕਥਾ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ। ਪੰਜ-ਛੇ ਸਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ-ਬੋਧ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਵੀ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਚਨ ਕੀਤਾ।

ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਕੁਝ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਸਮੇਤ ਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਕਲੌੜ ਆ ਠਹਿਰੇ, ਜੋ ਰਿਆਸਤ ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੀ। ਪਿੱਛੋ ਜਾ ਕੇ, ਪੰਜੋਖਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਭਾਈ ਆਤਮਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਲ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੀ ਮਿੱਤਰਤਾ ਬਣ ਗਈ। ਇਥੋ ਕੰਠਾਗਰ ਬਾਣੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਦੀ ਰੀਤ ਚਲਾਈ। ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਜਥੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਖੜੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ; ਪਰ, ਆਪ ਇਸ ‘ਤੇ ਹੀ ਅੜੇ ਰਹੇ। ਸੰਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਥੀ ਵੀ ਜੋ ਕਰੜੇ ਇਰਾਦੇ ਦੇ ਸਨ, ਏਸ ਪੱਧਤੀ ‘ਤੇ ਚੱਲਦੇ ਰਹੇ। ਭਾਈ ਆਤਮਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਬੜੇ ਯੋਧੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਨ। ਅਖੰਡ ਕੀਰਤਨੀ ਜਥੇ ਵਿਚ ਦੋ ਰਾਵਾਂ ਬਣ ਗਈਆਂ ਜੋ ਚੰਗੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰੜ ਦੇ ਪੱਕੇ ਰਹੇ। ਦਿਖਾਵੇ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਹਾਂ ਦੂਰ, ਪਰ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹੇ।

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਵਾਰੀ ਲੁਧਿਆਣੇ ਵਿਚ ‘ਰਹਿਰਾਸ’ ਦਾ ਪਾਠ ਕਰਦੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ। ਓਦੋਂ, ਮੱਛਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ‘ਤੇ ਹੱਲਾਂ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਪਰ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੱਥ ਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਮੱਛਰ ਨੂੰ ਹਟਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਉਠਿਆ ਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਹਿਲ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਆਇਆ। ‘ਰਹਿਰਾਸ’ ਦੇ ਨਿਰੰਤਰ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਪਾਠ ਸੁਣਨ ਵਿਚ ਤਨਿਕ ਮਾਤਰ ਵੀ ਵਿਘਨ ਨਾ ਪਿਆ। ਇਕ ਵਾਰੀ ਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਕਲੌੜ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ੍ਹਾਣਿਉ ਇਕ ਸੱਪ ਮੰਜੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਲੇਟਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਕੁਝ ਸਿੰਘਾ ਨੇ ਦੇਖਿਆਂ। ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਕਲੌੜ ਤੋਂ ਫੇਰ ਚੰਦੂ ਮਾਜਰੇ ਠਹਿਰਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ, ਜਿਥੇ ਸਤਨਾਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਏਥੇ ਕੁਝ ਸਮਾਂ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰ ਕੇ, ਅੱਜ-ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਉਹ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਕਾਲੋਨੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਤੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਗੁਰਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੋਲ ਰਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

ਪਿੱਛੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਕੀਰਤਨੀਏ ਭਾਈ ਮਹਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ‘ਨੰਨ੍ਹਾ’ ਦਾ ਭੋਗ ਬਹਾਦਰਗੜ੍ਹ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਪਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ। ਉਸ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਮਿੱਤਰਤਾ ਦੀ ਖਿੱਚ ਨਾਲ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਯਤਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਮਿਲੇ। ਉਹ ਇਸ ਵੇਲੇ 100 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਹੋਣ ‘ਤੇ ਅੰਤਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਕਾਲੋਨੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਕਿ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਜਪੀ ਤਪੀ ਤੇ ਜਾਨ ‘ਤੇ ਖੇਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੱਕੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਘੱਟ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਨ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਉਮੰਗ ਉੱਠੀ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਪਰਸਨ ਕੀਤੇ ਤੇ ਬਚਨ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਵੀ ਹੋਏ। ਇਹ ਛੋਟਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਨੋਟ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਕਿ ਭੁੱਲੀਆਂ ਵਿਸਰੀਆਂ ਯਾਦਾਂ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆ ਜਾਣ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਦਾ ਸੰਖੇਪ ਜਿਹਾ ਵਰਨਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

A Brief Jeevani of a Great Soul

The life of Sant Kirpaal Singh Jee

Having a special place within Sikhs, revolutionaries, raagis, and Naam abhiyaasis Sant Kirpaal Singh Jee is currently just passing through his last days on this world. Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh Jee was strictly against those who labelled themselves with the position of “Sant”. In his book ‘Sant Pad Nirnai’, Bhai Sahib has thoroughly condemned them in strong words; however, with Sant Kirpaal Singh Jee’s name Bhai Sahib himself has added the word ‘Sant’. Bhai Sahib helped Sant Kirpaal Singh Jee from being imprisoned in an English jail and saved him from being hanged.

A story is as follows, Sant Kirpaal Singh Jee was studying at Gurusar Sudhaar School. Instead of deciding what to do after completing his studies, he went on a trip to Sri Anandpur Sahib. At that time Sri Anandpur Sahib was not as bustling. Even Kiratpur Sahib was busier as people used to come and go to scatter ashes. There was a common manager for Anandpur Sahib and Kiratpur Sahib, his headquarters were at Kiratpur Sahib.

Sant Kirpaal Singh Jee, whose name was previously Uday Singh, began living with that manager whose name was Sant Singh. Sant Singh was a supporter and companion of the Babbars [those Singhs opposed to British rule]. Kiratpur Sahib became a centre of activities against the British rulers. This influence also came over Kirpaal Singh Jee.

During summer time of the year, Shimla was the capitol of British rulers, it was like a headquarters. In winter, the Indian (British) government’s full office was in Delhi. Its main seat was in Shimla, where government officials would commute to and fro with a small train of about four carriages. The Babbars found out that a special train en route to Shimla was occupied by British officers carrying treasury for salary. The Babbar Khalsa decided to teach a lesson to the government by fixing up these officers. A regiment of Singhs set off with a plan to overturn the train. En route wherever they found the train they attacked it by throwing rudimentary homemade bombs. The train was damaged and men were killed. After this incident, the Indian (British) government investigated the cause and the manager of Kiratpur Sahib, Sant Singh, was implicated. The Babbars dispersed to different locations.

Kirpaal Singh Jee first went hither and thither and then he went to stay with Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh Jee at Narangwal, where he told everything that had happened. A few days’ later police arrested and took away manager Sant Singh and began searching for his companions. Whilst staying with Bhai Sahib, Sant Kirpaal Singh Jee took Amrit through Bhai Sahib Jee’s Jatha [from Panj Pyare], and from Uday Singh his name became Kirpaal Singh. Bhai Sahib Jee arranged the permanent residence of Kirpaal Singh with Zaildaar Satnaam Singh of Chandu Mazre. Bhai Sahib mentioned Kirpaal Singh to Sirdar Gian Singh and Sirdar Daleep Singh I.G. and instructed them that they are to keep him safe from the hands of the British police. At the same time, Kirpaal Singh Jee began his Gurmat education from Giani Arjun Singh who was doing katha of Siri Guru Granth Sahib Jee, Bhai Gurdaas Jee’s writings, Sikh history and Dasam Granth in the areas of Ghungrane, Mazri, Guzzarwal, and Fallewal. Kirpaal Singh Jee learned Gurbani and history from Giani Arjun Singh. Over the period of five-six years, he was instilled with the knowledge of Gurbani Arths and Gurmat Giaan.

After this, Sant Kirpaal Singh Jee, along with a few Singhs, came to stay at Nandpur KalauRh which was in the state (riasat) of Patiala. After some time, he became very close friends witBhai Atma Singh Jee Panjokhra Sahib. From here, they started the tradition of Gurbani Kanth [singing Kirtan exclusively from memory]. Due to this, some confusion and conflict arose in the Jatha, but Sant Kirpaal Singh Jee remained strictly steadfast and continued following this as did some of his other companions who had the same rigid views. Bhai Atma Singh Jee was a great Saint-warrior Sikh. Akhand Kirtani Jatha was split into dual opinion over this, which was not a good thing. Sant Jee remained faithful to his views. He stayed away from any showing off and engrossed in japp-tapp [meditation] day and night.

One time, I saw him in Ludhiana reciting the Paath of ‘Rehraas’. At that time mosquitoes were swarming around and biting his body. However; neither did he moved his hand to swat away the mosquitoes nor there was any difference to his concentration. There was not even an iota of difference in his listening to continuous ‘Rehraas’ recitation. One time at Nandpur KalauRh, Singhs saw a snake lying next to Sant Jee on the pillow of his bed. From Nandpur KalauRh, Sant Jee went back again to Chandu Mazra where he was served with love and devotion by the family of Satnaam Singh. After spending some time there, now a days Sant Kirpaal Singh Jee is staying with his old friend and student Gurdeep Singh in the neighbouring colony of Punjabi University.

Recently, the funeral of kirtani Bhai Mohinder Singh ‘Nannha’ was held at Bahadurgarh Gurdwara Sahib. After that, feeling the pull of old friendship, we made an effort to meet Sant Kirpaal Singh Jee. At this time he is about 100 years old and spending his last days at this colony. A thought arose that such jappi-tappi, daredevil, and principled Gursikhs are rare, for this reason the inspiration to meet him emerged in my mind. To fulfil this wish I met with him and had a great conversation. Only this small note has been written on his life sketch so that forgotten and unrecalled memories may be presented. From some of these, a brief mentioning has been made here.
