Is it against Gurmat to Japp Naam fast or loud?

Posted by Kulbir Singh
Many people quote the following Pankiti to Jatha Gursikhs and advise them to go slow when doing Naam Abhyaas or to not chant Naam loudly:

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਬਿਲੋਵਨਾ ਬਿਲੋਵਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ॥ ਸਹਜਿ ਬਿਲੋਵਹੁ ਜੈਸੇ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ॥

They say that Naam should be chanted with love and slowly and not loud. But what they fail to explain is that why do they assume that there is no love when Gursikhs chant Naam loudly and fastly. Is it not exactly love and Bairaag that prompts Gursikhs to sometimes chant Naam slowly and then if need be fast? Isn't it love and Bairaag that forces Gursikhs to sometime cry out loudly to Vaheguru and at other times go chanting just in the Kanth in Madhma Baani or even Para-Pasanti that goes on in the Hirda and Naabhi? What kind narrow criteria of love is to chant Naam only slowly, only in low volume and only planned like an orchestra?

Bhai Sahib has translated the meaning of ਸਹਜਿ ਬਿਲੋਵਹੁ as follows:

ਸਹਜਿ ਬਿਲੋਵਹੁ ਤੋਂ ਭਾਵ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਲਗਾ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਸ ਸੁਆਸ ਖੰਡਾ ਖੜਕਾਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਹੈ। (Gurmat Karam Philosophy)

The condition that Gurbani has placed while chanting Naam is that ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ i.e. the essence should not be lost. How will this Tatt be lost if the Naam is chanted slowly, fast, loudly or not-loudly? The Tatt would be lost only when one stops chanting Naam or if one does not have Surthee Birthee in Naam. The word Sehaj has a lot of meanings in Gurbani and "slowly" is just one of the many meanings. Here the word "Sehaj" means to chant Naam with concentration and continuously.

Depending on the mood, Avastha and Mauj of Gurmukhs they chant the Anant-Tranga Naam in many ways - they go slow, they go fast, they go loud and they go whispering only. All Tranga of Naam are good. The main thing is to chant Naam and never stop.

Guru Sahib knows better.

It is interesting that you post this now, Bhai Sahib.

A few weeks ago a middle aged Singh while talking to a friend of mine told him that Gagan Singh and another Singh should do Abhiaas slowly and with "Sehaj" He quoted the Pangti that you have done Veechar on. Interestingly later one he started talking about how Bibek is not important, as it does not fall under "Sehaj". He quoted his father who he claims was a Sarblohi Singh who didn't eat from anyone, but now since his avastha has perhaps gotten higher he doesn't keep Sarbloh (or maybe he said he isn't as strict any more) He said Sikhi is all about Sehaj, because without Sehaj we will lose the Tatt. Me and the other Singh were quite offended at this, especially the other Singh ( he is the one that does Abhiaas the most loudest). And we vowed to do Abhiaas even louder!

One thing that should be noted is that the concept of time does exist in Sikhi. There is no limit to how fast the Surti works and can concentrate on NAAM/Bani. One example is when Guru Nanak put his hand on the Pir's head in Baghdad, and showed him many mandals in the blink of an eye. Also in Sukhmani Sahib, Guru Sahib states..."ਨਿਮਖ ਮਾਹਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵ." If our mind can travel the whole world in an instance, than why cannot it concentrate on NAAM at a fast rate, or do Path at high speeds? It is up to Guru Ji how fast/slow he wants his Gursikhs to do Naam Abiyaas. For some going fast might not work, but for others it does. There is no right or wrong. We should only limit ourselves for 2 Reasons
1) If we Japp Naam so fast we disregard the proper Vidhi
2) We read Bani so quickly, we start making mistakes

As long as the above two points are not done, than there is no limit to how fast we can do Naam Abiyaas.

Sure, depending on individual Awastha individual Sikh adapt to individual pace. When in Sangat, Sikh adapts to Sangat's pace.

Their should no restriction on the volume of ones Naam Abhyiaas , but the speed should be in union with the sangat. When one observes the elderly and more experienced Singhs they notice how these Singhs do Swas Swas Naam Abhyiaas with the flow of sangat. Meaning they do Simran collectively and in tune. When like minded sangat works together in tune then the naam abhyiaas automcially speeds up in full vigor.

Nowadays we have many youngsters manually reciting out of tune or reciting loud to show others. I have seen some young people come and sit down. Do Naam Abhyiaas real loud and fast for ten minutes, and then they get worn out. if we want to reap the full benefits of sangat and keep a steady fatigue we should be going with the flow of sangat. I think when we do seva of sangat we should be intune with the flow of sangat.

Bhai Sukhdeep Singh jee is 100% correct. Issue is about the sangat are we getting more sangat to do naam abyaas with us or are alone at 120mph in our own avastha??

First thing is compassion - humility towards everyone around you - if any kirtania has respect for that than they would automatically be mindful and there would no need to this thread at all.

Sukhdeep Singh Ji, when speaks about Simran in Sangat, is probably not talking about Simran in Kirtan in Sangat, I think.
