The vital role of Gurbani Viyakaran - ਸੈ ਹਥਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਗੁਲਾਲੁ

ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਕਮਲੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਹੈ ਸੈ ਹਥਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਗੁਲਾਲੁ ॥

A Gurmukh Pyare brought this Pankiti to attention and discussion. Gurbani Viyakaran played a very key role while interpreting this Pankiti. The main point of discussion was the word ਗੁਲਾਲੁ. Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha wrote that the word ਗੁਲਾਲੁ has been derived from the word ਕੀਲਾਲ which means water. This way the meaning of the Pankiti becomes:

ਹੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਸੈਂਕੜੇ ਹਥ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਅਲਿਪਤ ਕਮਲ ਹੈਂ।

But the problem is that the presence of preposition ਵਿਚਿ after noun ਗੁਲਾਲੁ should have removed its Aunkad but it did not. From this we have to derive the understanding that the word ਵਿਚ is not related to ਗੁਲਾਲੁ and that ਗੁਲਾਲੁ is rather related to ਕਮਲੁ. So now the meaning of this Pankiti becomes:

ਹੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਸੈਂਕੜੇ ਹਥ (ਪਾਣੀ) ਵਿਚ ਅਲਿਪਤ ਗੁਲਾਲ ਕਮਲ ਹੈਂ।

The change from the first meaning is firstly the word ਗੁਲਾਲੁ is now an adjective of noun ਕਮਲੁ and the noun ਪਾਣੀ is mafhoom i.e. Gupt with ਸੈ ਹਥਾ being the Pargat adjective.

Gurbani is Agam Agaadh Bodh.

Gurbani Viyakaran pamphlet published by Sikh Missionary Ludhiana has good introduction to Gurbani Viyakaran. Then there are advanced books on Gurbani Viyakaran by Professor Sahib Singh, Bhai Joginder Singh Talwara and Giani Harbans Singh.
