1945 Samagam - Bhai Baata jee; A Bibi's spiritual state

Posted by Kulbir Singh
A Young Bibi jee's Chardi Kala Avastha

In 1945, Bhai Sahib and the whole Jatha arrived at Bhai Sahib’s nephew Bhai Sajjan Singh’s residence in Montegomery (currently in Pakistan), to celebrate the Gurpurab of Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee. Two days before the Gurpurab, Siri Akhand Paath Sahib was started. Before the Siri Akhand Paath Sahib, Bhai Sahib jee started Siri Asa kee Vaar Kirtan at Amritvela. Bhai Sahib did extremely Chardi Kala Kirtan for 2 hours. Hearts of Gursikhs seated in Sangat were pierced with the sharp arrows of Gurbani coming out of Bhai Sahib’s mouth.

After Bhai Sahib was done, a young Bibi, who had her heart pierced by the love-arrows of Gurbani was asked to do Kirtan. She got up with half-closed eyes and sat on the Vaaja to do kirtan. She had no sense of the surroundings. The eye-balls of her eyes had risen above. Her face was pointing upwards. She starting the Kirtan with such heart-piercing and love-filled voice that Gurbani-arrows went through the hearts of the Guru-Pyare sitting in the Sangat. The Shabad she started was:

Bibi jee went into Smadhi (trance) during the Shabad and many in the Sangat too had similar spiritual state levied upon them. In such Chardi Kala, the Siri Akhand Paath Sahib started.

Bhai Baata jee and Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee

There was a Singh by the name of Bhai Puran Singh at the time of Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee. He was a very strict Sarblohi Singh and always used to carry a Sarbloh Baata wrapped in a piece of chador . For this reason, Singhs used to lovingly call him Bhai Baata jee.

By profession Bhai Baata jee was a driver who drove his vehicle on the Montegomery-Arif road (currently in Pakistan). Everyday in the morning, he used to carry mail along with his passengers, as part of his duty. He used to carry a Sarbloh baata wrapped in a chador and drank water or ate food out of this Sarblohi baata. His village fell on the way of the route he drove his bus on. His family used to wait upon him with cooked food and he used store this food in his baata and eat it at the next stop. He was deeply in love with Gurbani and used to stand holding the poles in his bus and do Gurbani Paath and Simran all night long.

A Spiritual Miracle on the Gurpurab Day

On the Kattak-Puniya (full-moon night of Kattak month) day at Amritvela, the Bhog of Siri Akhand Paath Sahib occurred and immediately, Siri Asa kee Vaar Kirtan started. Kirtan was going on in pure Chardi Kala. Bhai Baata jee was sitting right beside Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee. Siri Asa kee Vaar Kirtan was going on in high spirits but this Guru Pyaara (Bhai Baata jee) came out of Smadhi (spiritual trance) as the first rays of sun hit his eyes. He got up hurriedly to go to work (deliver mail and passengers).

Since Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee was sitting right by him, he noticed Bhai Baata jee getting up. Bhai Sahib lovingly ordered him, “ਬੈਠ ਜਾਓ” (stay seated!).

Bhai Baata jee was in a rush and replied, “ਡਾਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਡਿਊਟੀ ਹੈ ਜੀ, ਉਹ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਉਣੀ ਹੈ।“ (I have a duty to deliver mail and I have to deliver that). Saying this he hurriedly walked outwards. He reached his bus, loaded the mail and passengers and started driving towards his destination. He had gone only a short distance that his bus stalled. It just won’t go forward. Then such miracle occurred that if he would put the bus in reverse, it would drive but won’t drive forward.

He knew that it was Bhai Sahib’s Bachan that was doing the work. He realized that the divine Will was to stay in Sangat. He parked his bus and hurriedly reached Sangat to gather the true Spiritual Laaha (profit) that was abundant in the Sangat at that time.

Such was the spiritual state of Bhai Sahib and his companions. A Singh of Bhai Sahib jee’s times once commented that Bhai Sahib had come from Sachkhand with a whole group of Ranglay Sajjan to revive Sikhi. This is exactly what Bhai Sahib and his companions did. Dhan are such Guru Pyare!

Daas,
Kulbir Singh

How amazing were the singhs of bhai sahib's time. Reading such incidents always excell in inspiration. This story also teaches us that we should accept a gursikh's bachan and not over ride it. When ever a gursikh utters a bachan for us, it is for our betterment and our own benifit.

Please share more such stories. They are extremely refreshing to read and highly inspirational.
