Binni Rass vs Fanism

Just some quick thoughts. Dass has seen some unusual acts of fanism over the past couple of months. I found it very funny....

Fanism Keertan Goers

1. Surthee Birthee focused on their Kirtan Star.

2. Hope to take pictures whilst in Kirtan of their star.

3. Will move to the front when there star comes.

4. Will move back when Individual goes.

5. When Individual leaves so will they.

6. Aspirations of taking photos with Individual.

7. Will Only attend Kirtan Divans when they know there Individual is coming.

8. Treat Individual like Superstar throughout Samagam, thus increase Ego.

9. Deciding what Tunes sound good to give Kan Rass

10. Might get Lost in tunes and then GurbaNee doesn't stick to the mind in such cases

Bhinni Rassi Keertan Goers

1. Thrilled to be sitting in Sangat of all Gursikhs/Sangataan

2. Enjoys everyone's Kirtan

3. Makes efforts to Sing every pangti with all Zor

4. Unaware and Unconcerned of the Kirtanis Status

5. Has aim to get Rass & Naam Dhan

6. Attends all Smagams as much as possible for Naam Dhan

7. Focuses on GurbaNee and not bothered about Sur & Thaal (Tunes etc)

8. Sees Himself as a Sevak & Beggar of Guru Sahib

Excellent write up Bhai Vista jee and very much required as well. The problem is getting worse and worse and so much so that if their star Kirtani does not attend a Samagam, they don't go to such Samagam. How worse can it get...

Dass based on personal experience can say that the best kirtan samagams are the one's where there is no concept of famous kirtanis, no restriction on time and most importantly the collective effort of the sangat present in the samagam to sing the kirtan along no matter who is doing the kirtan. The rass in such a kirtan is beyond description.

Daas has never believed in the concept of a good or bad kirtani. Kirtan is of Gurbani. This can be very easily tested in the kirtan samagams. If all the sangat tries to sing along with a lesser known kirtani Vs stay quiet when a 'Popular' kirtani is doing the kirtan you will get more rass and enjoyment in the kirtan where all sangat is singing along.

Daas won't name the kirtani here but very well remembers that one of the very popular kirtani now a days never used to get the PRIME time in rensabai kirtans in 90's. Daas not only remembers but also has personally recorded audio tapes of the kirtani when he was given time when most of the sangat is about to go home after 4AM. The kirtani now and then was the same but the difference is that at that time most of the sangat was not willing to sing along due to fanism concept and now everyone wants to sing at their peak with the same kirtani.

May guru sahib bless us with the tatt Gurmat kirtan samagams where singhs put all their effort to be near Guru sahib and the kirtanis and engage in singing the gurbani ignoring the fact who is doing kirtan.

Excellent post.

Unfortunately these issues are very concerining and happens ALL the time. Especially in the UK. It has gotten so bad that dass remebers speaking to a Singh and i simply asked "Have you heard Mera Baid Guroo Govinda by Bhai X Singh?" To which the Singh replied "Na thats crap, Bhai Z Singhs version is way better!" This type of mentality and attitude is very concerning to say the least.

Regarding the above posts, we must try to resolve this issue as much as we can. I will be passing on the statement that Bhai Bakhsheesh Singh Jee released a few months ago highlighting the points about Keertan. We should pass on such documents to the Elder Gursikhs of the towns who arrange for Keertaneeaa to have time slots at local programmes. The person I think of straight away when thinking of this fanism concept unfortunately is ****admin cut****. Dass wont say anymore, maybe some other Gursikhs have also witnessed this.

Guroo Kirpa Kare.

A much needed post.
Such proraganda needs to be stopped, or else, the known and famours Keertanis would soon go down the route of being worshipped, and we are already seeing this happening in one way or the another. Defying such propaganda also kills the self pride of some Keertanies.

Its seems that the videos(live and otherwise) are contributing to this problem. Why is the video almost always focussed on the kirtan stage. My feelings are that the video camera should be mostly focussed on Guru Sahib Ji and once in a while turned to show the Sangat and the kirtan stage

There is only 1 reason, I on a personal note dont derive much anand from keertan nowdays:
Keertan(by kirtanis) is lacking genuine preym/love. The keertan today is being done from the from the throat, not from the core of ones heart.
Its about everything(fannism of kertanis & keertan "style",ego) in the keertan mandal today but just not preym from the core of ones heart.
