Gurmat versus Superstition and Rituals

Posted by Khalsa91
Khalsa Ji,

In this day and age there is a lot of superstition and rituals being performed in our community.

Two days ago I saw my brother (not in Gursikhi) wearing a black thread on his wrist.
On purpose I asked him: ‘Why are you wearing this black thread?’ He replied: ’This will save me from bad luck (nazzar)’.

Another example
A few weeks ago my 9 year old cousin came to visit us with his family at home.
I saw him wearing a black thread around his neck with a green color stone in it.
(I’m not happy with this at all)

I asked him the same question ‘Why do you wear this?’ and he said ‘I don’t know my mom gave it to my’.
So I went to my chachi and asked and she told me they went to India to someone who reads the palm of your hands and he foresaw with the help of his computer and the stars etc
That my cousin will become a famous soccer player but his head will get hurt (injury) in the next couple of years to come.
So he basically gave them a black thread with a special color stone and told my family ‘If he wears this nothing bad will happen’. They told me they didn’t get charged for any of this.
(which was a bit surprising)

I personally don’t believe any of this but the sad fact is a large part of our community does.
With Guru’s Kirpa this gareeb Sikh is preparing a PowerPoint presentation (talk) about Sikhi versus Superstition and rituals. So Daas can share some Gurmat knowledge with the local sangat and family

Therefore my questions to the sangat are:
1. What does Gurbani say about this topic?
2. What did the Guru’s (in Sikh History) and Bhagats teach us about superstition and rituals?
3. Can you share examples which illustrate that superstition is nonsense? (Examples that everybody can relate too and understand)

Would be good to share some Gurbani lines, personal stories and Saakhis. This would be great parchaar resource for all to share with youth.

Thanks in advance and forgive my if Daas made any mistakes

Once upon a time there use to live a Muslim Pir Fakir in some village. Because of his polite nature and bandagi, the villagers respected him alot. Whenever any villager was in some difficulty, pain or sick they would approach Pir for help. The Pir would give them 'Taveez'. He also uses to warn the person to never open the 'Taveez' to see what is inside. When purpose is solved the 'Taveez' was supposed to be dropped in nearby village pond.

One day a Sikh approached this Pir and asked for help. The Pir asked him to go back and denied him the 'Taveez'. Next day Sikh disguised and went again. Still Pir recognized and denied him. Next day again this Sikh went in Burqa and Pir told him to stop coming. Pir said no matter how much you disguise yourself; I will recognise you and will not give 'Taveez'.

Finally, the disheartened Sikh thought of a scheme. He waited at far distance from Pir's house. When one villager was returning from Pir's house the sikh tricked the villager to catch hold of his 'Taveez'. Quickly sikh ran away with 'Taveez' towards his home. On reaching home he can't control himself to see what is inside 'Taveez'. But his enthusiasm turned to disappointment when he saw nothing other than dust inside the 'Tabeez'.With fuming face he went to Pir's house and allegedly ridiculed him to make fool of innocent villagers. Pir calmly asked sikh to come after sunset.

That evening Pir took the sikh with him to the nearby village Gurdwara. Then Pir escorted the Sikh towards 'Joda Ghar' and told him that, "Every night I come here to collect the dhoor from Guru Nanak's house. Next day I just forward the blessed dhoor to unfortunate ones who don't come to Guru Nanak's door".

Pir said, "O Sikh, you only tell me what Taveez can I give you when I am taking everything from here itself".

This saakhi reminds us that nothing is greater than "Naam" in this maatlok. All the dhaage, tabeez, stones, etc... are bogus garbage.

Lastly, why don't you ask your cousin to give that locket stone to Michael Schumacher for one day. Maybe he will come out of comma. That stone is to save heads, right ? eye popping smiley

Bhul Chuk Maaf.
