Query regarding running shabad totals at Ang 70

Posted by eyesacademic
I have a small question for understanding how the totals run in the compilation scheme of SGGS ji.

At Ang 70 the 8th Ashtpadi of Guru Amardass ji is going on,17 of Guru Nanak ji have already been written earlier. The running total is written as:
॥੮॥੧੭॥੮॥੨੫॥
17 + 8=25 are total Ashtpadees uptil now. 8 Ashtpadis of Guru Amardass ji. What does the number 17 signify? All the ashtpadis before and after this one have 3 numbers. Only this one has 4.

Seems to me like number of Astpadis have been give for both Gurus.

੮ - number of paddas.

੧੭ - number of Aastpadis of Mahalla 1

੮ - number of Aastpadis of Mahalla 3

੨੫ - Grand Total = 17+8

It is not a requirement to have only 3 numbers. Seems to be the practice to include previous total when Banis run for a couple of Angs to avoid flipping back too much to write the next total.

Could be, yes. I shall have a look at other Raags to see if this has been done elsewhere too.

If you check Ang 128-130 you will see the same thing.
