Pronunciation of ਫ and ਫ਼

Posted by Navroop Singh
VJKK VJKF,

When I was taught Punjabi as a child, I was taught that the pronunciation of ਫ was a clear "f" sound. On some online "Learn Gurmukhi" videos, I have heard ਫ pronounced as a "ph" sound i.e. a softer version of ਪ, in line with the sound variations shown in the preceding lines, [ਕ-ਖ], [ਚ-ਛ], [ਟ-ਠ] and [ਤ-ਥ]. With ਫ as a "ph" sound, ਫ਼ then forms the distinct "f" sound, and is used in words of Arabic origin.

In accepting this I have a problem in that I cannot recall hearing any Paaht or Kirtan where ਫ has been pronounced as a "ph", it has always been sounded out as an "f" sound! The only word where I've heard these two sounds is in "Fateh".

Benti to Sangat to shed light on my confusion. What is correct way of pronouncing non-Arabic/Farsi ਫ words in Gurbani?

The "ph" sound is the correct way to pronounce the ਫ without bindi.
