Kirtani Bhai Amrik Singh Zakhmi passed away; Sikh bodies express grief

Jalandhar, Punjab (November 11, 2013): According to a news reported by Sikh24, an online news portal, [w]orld renowned Kirtani, Bhai Amrik Singh Zakhmi passed away on November 10, 2013.

“Bhai Sahib, known for singing classical kirtan renditions, was celebrated across the world for keeping traditional kirtan alive”, the Sikh24 news reads further.

Bhai Amrik Singh Zakhmi was based out of Jalandhar however he traveled extensively throughout the world doing kirtan seva. Bhai Amrik Singh started doing kirtan seva along with his father Bhai Dharam Singh Zakhmi during 1960s.

Bhai Amrik Singh is said to have passed away due to a brain haemorrhage.

Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh GK have expressed grief over the demise of Bhai Amrik Singh Zakhmi.

Great pesonality great seva from Amrik Singh Jee Zakmi, I rememeber clearly 7-8 years ago they mentioned of youth sitting next to walls with backs rested on wall in sangat that youth should especailly not do this, they said for years he's had back problems and when he sits straight and does keertan he doesnt feel no pain in the back. They stressed listening to keertan with full attention with correct posture in sangat rather than relaxing with backs against walls in the main darbar.

Such a great kirtani of the Panth. He was one of those few kirtanis who also had good Gurbani Ucharan and properly pronounced the ZZ and SHH sounds where it was needed.
