what does the word "SATNAAM" mean

true name

or

name that always remains

Singh's have always told me that it means, "the true name".

maybe the rest of the sangat has different vichaar.

name that always remains = true name..

what else is true? nothing. everything is false except naam (by which u get to know about the existence of GOD)

so..true is only that which remains.. and naam is true.. so it remains forevever!!

not sure ..but, the sihari in front of t is due to sanskrit word "satya"... ya of sanskrit gets converted to sihari here.

Sat Naam means Akal Purakhs name is true. The One formless God is truth, and his name is true. He is one and his from is the embodiment of truth, as he is the form of truth his name is true. Truth and naam mean one and the same thing. He could only be the truth if his name was true. Simply put sat naam means his name is "true". Let me give a simple comparison to the uniqueness of Gods name in Gurmat.

Muslims say Allah o Akbar- God is Great/greatest. They are not stating his name is great they are stating God is great. On the other hand we say Sat Naam God is the truth because his name is true. He is the truth , and his name is "True". Meaning he is his name and his name is true . This brings greater conviction of the true name and thus we meditate on the true name. Other faiths dont say Gods name is true, and thus the conviction is not as strong. All other faiths say many great things about God, but none of them say he is True and his name is true. No faith emphasizes on the name of God instead they emphasis on the attributes of God ( kirtam name).
