ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਾਥ ॥

In Japji Sahib it says: ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਾਥ ॥

In this tukh ਸਿਧ and ਨਾਥ are listed separately. Are they not the same or are they different? Did Guru Nanak Dev Jee do meeting in Sidh Gosht with the Sidhs or the Naaths? because sometimes I have seen and heard people using Sidhs and Naaths interchangeably as if they are both the same yet Guru Nanak Dev Jee has listed them here separately? If Naaths are not Sidhs, then who are they?

Sidhs are said to be 84 and Naaths are much less (single digit number). Some famous Naaths are Gorakhnath and Machhindernath. No other holy person from Punjab, after 10 Guru Sahibaan is as famous as Gorakhnath. He was the topmost disciple of Machhindernath and he surpassed his guru in both spirituality and fame. Punjabi folktales from Heer Ranjha to Raja Rasalu to Pooran Bhagat are all full of reference to Gorakhnath.

So basically, Naths are one step above Sidhs who in turn are above normal Jogis.

One can see that in the Quote ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਾਥ ॥

In the words ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਾਥ here each word is a PLURAL NUMBER WORD.


Every word is the reference for a particular spritual state one can achieve thru LISTENING

OF NAAMu.

It is woth noting that ਸੁਣਿਐ is the reference for a specific state of listening.It is quite different

from normal listening by any person.

Thanks Kulbir Singh Jee for the information about Sidhs and Naath Yogis. When Guru Nanak Dev Jee did veechar with the Sidhs in Sidh Gosht, was Gorakh Naath not there? I always thought he and his Guru were part of the Sidh Mandli.

Yes, Sri Guru Ji spoke to Gorak Nath and many other naths who were under Gorak nath during the conversations with the Naths. Each nath feel at the holy feet of Sri Guru Ji after their deep conversations
