Ekta-Unity in the Panth

http://gurmatbodh.blogspot.com/2012/01/ekta.html

One thing that is lacking in the Panth today is Ekta, or unity amongst Gursikhs. In my opinion Ekta is when you accept another Gursikh’s opinions on certain controversial issues and don’t let it get between your Gursikhi Prem. There are many stories that I have heard of Gursikhs from the Damdami Taksal and Akhand Keertani Jatha, and how much prem they had for each other. Over the past 30-40 years these two Jathebandis have given the most for the Panth. On Vasakhi 1978 it was these two Jathebandis that spoke out against the Nakli Nirankaris, who were disrespecting the Sikh Gurus. Sant Kartar Singh in the early 70’s held protests and nagar keertans against the Nirankaris. Then in 1978 under Sant Jarnail Singh the Taksal and the AKJ under Bhai Fauja Singh peacefully protested against them. Everyone knows the story of what happened next and the 13 Singhs that gave their life protecting the honour of their Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee. More can be read here: Vaisakhi 1978 and here: Vaisakhi 1978These two jathebandis stood shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand against Beadbi of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee.

One of the first stories I heard was the amount of love Sant Gurbachan Singh Jee and Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir Singh Jee had for each other. These two Brahmgiani Gursikhs who had a few different opinions on some issues, yet there Rehat and Maryada was virtually the same. Sant Gurbachan Singh’s love and respect for Bhai Sahib is clear in a poem they wrote about Bhai Sahib:

The amount of respect and love Sant Jee had for Bhai Sahib is clear in this poem. Calling Bhai Sahib a Sant, writing about the sacrifices Bhai Sahib made and still kept Sarbloh Bibek. Dhan Guroo Ke Pyare.

Another time, Bhai Joginder Singh Jee (Talwara) invited Sant Gurbachan Singh Jee to their house for an Akhaand Paat Sahib, Talwara Jee told Sant Jee the Bhog would be after Mundavnee and Raagmala would not be read. Still Sant Gurbachan Singh Jee came and did Katha after the Bhog. Gursikhs like Sant Gurbachan Singh didn`t care when Bhog was, as long as it was one with piaar. They knew that those that do not believe in Raag mala only do not believe in it because of their piaar for Guru Jee. Today we see Sikhs getting into physical fights over these issues.

Another story that comes to mind is the amount of Love Sant Kartar Singh had for Bhai Jeevan Singh and the other Jatha Singhs at the time. Whenever Bhai Jeevan Singh Jee came to Mehta for Rainsbhai Keertans Sant Kartar Singh would spread his Hazooria on the ground and get Bhai Sahib to sit on it and then would serve Bhai Sahib langar.

Master Niranjan Singh a Keertani from the Akhand Keertani Jatha says in a video recording that every year the Jatha used to go to Mehta, the headquarters of the Damdami Taksal to the Barsi Smagam of Sant Gurbachan Singh Jee, they would do Keertan and other seva. The Taksali Singhs would show a lot of love and no one could tell that, who is a Taksali Singh and who is a Jatha Singh. The Taksali Singhs never once brought up the issue of Raagmala. Sant Kartar Singh used to organize Nagar Keertans and the Jatha used to go to them to do Keertan. The Taksal owned a car, and Sant Kartar Singh used to make the Jatha Singhs sit on top of the car, rather than walk. So much love between these Gursikhs.

During the 1980s when Sant Jarnail Singh was the Head of the Taksal, the Taksal was invited by the Jatha to an Akhaand Paat Sahib, so Sant Jarnail Singh and some of the Taksali singhs went to the Bhog. When the Bhog was done at Mundavnee one of the Taksali Singhs shouted out,”Oh aren’t you going to read Raag Mala?” Sant Jarnail Singh took this singh outside and slapped him, and told him “everything was going so peacefully, so much anand, why did you ruin that anand by shouting that out!”

This was the love Gursikhs had for each other. We should all aspire to create this ekta in the Panth!

Very well written and a much required post. The ones who argue over such matters need to look to history and instead show a united front to the many enemies of the Panth. The picture says it all.

I dont think ekta amongst the panth will occur though acceptance of diffrences amongst the Taksali and Jatha Singhs. I think the very fact that SInghs associate themselves with these groups instead of associating themselves with the panth is the very reason why there is no unity in the panth. Every group is claiming they follow Guru Gobind Singh Jis rehat maryada most accurately and some sampradas/deras are even claiming direct lineage to GUru Sahib. This elitist attitude is the folly of our panth, and the very reason why Singhs have hostility amongst one another.

We all know for a fact Guru Sahib created the Sri Akal Takht and gave leadership to the Panj Pyaarey. Once we associate ourselves with the house of the Guru ( Sri Akal Takht) and not associate with seperate deras then Ekta will occur.

Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir SIngh JI would always pray for the upliftment of the panth. He never started his own seperate Dera. He thought if he started his own dera the Singhs would only think about the success of the dera and not the upliftment of the wider panth.

VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

In this spirit, please remind both elders and the youth to stop using phrases like "Jathe/Taksal To Amrit Chakiya" or "Jathe/Taksal Da Singh/Singhni/Sikh/whatever".

In his book about Gurmat Maryada, Sant Kartar Singh Ji mentions something beautiful about the SIngh Sabha Lehar movement. He states the Gurmukh Saints of this movement such as Sant Attar SIngh Ji ( Mastuana) , Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir SIngh Ji, Sant Sunder SIngh Ji, Sant Maghar SIngh were like shining stars . For the upliftment of the panth, withIn the house of the Guru they perfrormed the most sublime and highest seva in preaching the Gurus word within the spirit of Ekta.

Baba Raam Singh Ji was a great Panthic Gurmukh. If not more stricter his rehni behni was almost indentical to Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir SIngh Ji. His life was strictly in service towards the panth. In a letter to his associates, he states there is no other Guru besides Guru Granth Sahib Ji. He never once claimed gurguddi nor did he ever create a cult following like the modern day Namdharis. He always told his associates to serve and follow the panth. WHen doing Gurmat parchar these are the things he taught.

1) While sleeping, standing, sitting meditate on Gods name.
2) Wake up for AMrit Vela and do Ishnaan, and Nitnem
* Besides mandatory 7 banis his nitnem included Asa Di Vaar, Sukhmani Sahib, Aarti and many banis from Sri Dasam Granth
3)Do not eat or drink from a leather bowl
47 ) Anand Karaj should be according to Gurus Maryada
5) Do not sell daughter or give dowry
6)Every month donate money for the making of degh
7)Besides other Gursikhs do not eat or drink from anyone else
8)Do not serve or consume any intoxicants
9)Make an honest living
10) do not lie
11)Do not engage any extra martial relations
12) Be shasterdhari at all times and keep a small kirpan in your dastar
13) Love and protect other Gursikhs

Like Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir Singh Ji, Baba Ji spend many years of his life life in jail due to his panthic contributions. He was exiled to burma and died, and after his death his assocaites created a cult following making him out to be a guru despite Baba Jis clear order not to follow any Guru but Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. People make rumors about Baba Jis life and said he did things like practice havan. These rumors are untrue. Many anti-panthic figures always try to defame Gurmukhs who lived their life strictly according to Gurmat. The same way people claim Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir SIngh Ji was an agent of the British. Such claims are not only foolish but are simply irrational.

One important rehat Baba Ji emphaized was the serving of langar by Gursikhs who live according to the principles of GUrmat. The rehat of Bibek diet and amrit vela sangat rehat are the two rehat which are going to unite the panth and make it stronger. May Guru Sahib inspire us to live a life obligated to the degh ( Sarab loh kettle) and teg ( kirpan) and not any person or group which is the true principle behind Bibek. May Guru Sahib inspire to live a life like those GUrmukhs who lived strictly according to Gurmat and served the panth with their mind, body, and wealth.

The revival of Naam Abhyiaas, Gurbani kirtan, Sarab Loh Bibek, and strict vegetarianism in the British Raj is often attributed to Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir SIngh Ji. However, historically speaking the propagation of these rehats was first propagated by Baba Raam Singh Ji who was born more then half century before Bhai Sahib. Baba Ji did massive amounts of Naam Abhyiaas. He always kept a mala with him at all times. Because of his emphasis on Naam his associated eventually became known as the NaamDhari SIkhs and Kukey.

Baba Ji had strong gumat principles and kept alive these oral traditions of Gurmat Maryada . He would never propagate Gurmat without the supreme guidance of Panj Pyaarey. When propogating Gurbani Kirtan in Punjab he would send raagi jathebandis to various places of Punjab. The screening, and sending of these numerous jathebandi were managed and organized by 6 Singhs which included Bhai Kahn SIngh Nabha who later became a pioneer of the SIngh Sabha Movement.

In regards to Sarab Loh Bibek and Vegetarian diet, Baba Ji and his associates kept an extremely strict pehra on their sarab loh batey. They would not go anywhere without their batey to the extent that it was almost like a kakkar to them. They only ate from other like minded individuals who had staunch beliefs in Gurmat. Such strictness secluded them from the general sangat who overly assimilated and even Gursikhs like Bhai Kahn SIngh scolded them for following Sarab Loh BIbek. Yet they still kept firm in roti beti da sanjh rehat. They never took any job positions related to the British Raj, and boycott all material goods from the British raj. Everything they ate was home grown, and everything they made was hand made. Talk about taking Bibek to the next level They lived and breathed Khalsa Maryada with each and every breath.

Baba Ji was eventually exiled into a far off place ( Burma) because of his unconformity and anti assimilation sentiments. Due to the long distance of seperation he was unable to provide panthic leadership to his associates. They eventually became disillusioned and started to treat the son of Baba Ji as a Guru. They created their own Rehat Maryada which became completey different then the panth. This was the misfortune of Baba Ji not writing books on Gurmat Maryada. If he would have his associated could of learned from this books at a private level and adopted these teachings in on an individual level and still follow panthic maryada. This is the great thing about Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir SIngh Ji. He continued the oral traditions of Khalsa Maryada through is personal example and he propagated Gurmat through his books. For this reason no person can ever instiutionalize his teachings as a seperate maryada from the panth. All we can do is learn from kamaee waley SInghs on an individual level and still work for the upliftment of the GUrus family, the panth.

No doubt, Baba Raam Singh jee was an amazing Gursikh. The image of Baba jee that is propagated by the current Naamdharis, is totally contrary to what he really was. The letters that he wrote to his followers from Burma jail are great Gurmat literature because they contain principles of Gurmat including Naam, Amritvela and Bibek. He mentions again and again in these letters that he is just a humble Sikh and that only Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee is the Guru.

It is also said that he kept Sarbloh Bibek very strictly and used to wear Blue but now his followers wear all-White and even show him wearing White. He forbid all Bibiyaan from wearing Salwars because Salwar is an Islamic dress. To this day the Naamdhari women don't have Pauncha on the bottom of their Pajamis but now their Pajaamis have become more like Salwars.

Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee has written very highly of not only Baba Raam Singh jee but also about Baba Balak Singh Hazro who the current Naamdharis claim to be their 11th Guru and to whom they claim that Siri Guru Gobind Singh jee gave Gurta-Gaddi to. Bhai Sahib has written that Baba Balak Singh Hazro never gave Naam to anyone on his own and he always organized Amrit Sinchaars to give Naam through the Punj Pyare. In one of such Amrit Sinchaar Samagams, Baba Raam Singh who was a young soldier in the army of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, received Amrit and Naam.

Guru Sahib Kirpa Karan.

Panthik Ektaa can only happen if we all follow the same Rehat Maryada and harbor the same beliefs and values.
Differences have only occured because manmat has entered the Panth.

I also forgot to share during AMrit Sanchars organized by his jatha he would not give men Amrit unless their wives took amrit as well. He always encouraged women to take AMrit which was becoming a rarity in those days . Even today nobody stresses rehat to women.

Everything is all down the drain at the moment. The RehatVaan wala love to fight each other. If the're fighting over silly things, what can we expect more slaps to the face by external parties.
