Vaheguru ji ka khalsa Vaheguru ji ki fatheh!

Sadhsangat ji, please kindly read this shabad from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji:

Quote

kaajee mulaa(n) karehi salaam || ein hi(n)doo maeraa maliaa maan ||9||

This shabad is written by Bhagat Naam Dev Ji and a few times throughout the shabad he is referred to as "Hindu" compared to the Sultan (who claimed to be a Muslim) that held him captive.

However, many Gursikhs assert that all Bhagats, in order to get Gurmat Naam, were Gursikhs of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Could you please clarify ?

thank you,

Vaheguru ji ka khalsa Vaheguru ji ki fatheh!

The Muslims also referred to Guru Sahib as a Hindu but this doesnt make him Hindu. Auraganzeb sent a spy whom witnessed and recorded the events of Vasakhi. In his account he referred to Guru Sahib as a Hindu kafir ( infidel).

Bhagat Naam Dev Ji was born as a Hindu, but he died as a Gursikh. The episode of bringing back the cow to life most likely occured while he was still a Hindu. It goes against Gurmat to bring the dead back to life. When Baba Gurditt Ji accidently killed a cow and brought it back to life he had to face the same consequences as Baba Atal Ji.

Thank you Bhai Sukhdeep Singh ji.

Anyone else have any insight on this?

Veer Sukhdeep Singh is correct. Following are some of the thoughts on your post:

1. It seems like this incident is from that period of Bhagat jee when he had not met Siri Guru jee and had not obtained the Gurmat Naam. Bhagat jee is not calling himself a Hindu but is stating that this is what the Badshah said. The Badshah at that time was not aware of the distinct identity of the Sikhs that became more apparent with the appearance of Khalsa.

2. In those days and even up to the days of Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee, the Mughals used to club Sikhs along with the Hindus. In Tozke-Jahangiri, Jahangir has referred to Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee as a Hindu.

Please remember that Hindu"ism" wasn't name of any religion. Back then, the word Hindu referred to natives of the Hind region. Thus the king probably being a Mughal has referred to Bhagat Ji as a Hindu, native of Hind. Usually all Aryans were referred as Hindu.

I also wanted to ask a question, the word "ein" is plural, but it seems like in this shabad it's referring to just Bhagat Naam Dev Ji (in singular form). Even Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha states that "ein" is plural of "eis".
